Is the honor system a bad idea for those who play off meta

TheDangerousTaco··3 votes·481 views

There are many games where my teammates would choose to report someone who is playing a off meta pick , despite them doing well going 2/1 , when they themselves are 1/6. Wouldn't this system reflect poorly on those who play the game just to have fun?

Playing Off-Meta will have no effect on the Honor System; at least from the 'negative' perspective.

Players already begin at Level 2 Honor ranking. Which signals you're at the very least a 'neutral' player. The only way for you to lose Honor Rank and demote into Ranks1/0 is by having your account actually be punished. Chat Restrictions, X-Day Bans, ect. False reports filed by other players will do absolutely nothing to impact your Honor Rating.

So go nuts with whatever picks you want, so long as you're not intentionally trying to ruin the game for your teammates. (And you're being polite about your picks.)

I understood that part. What I really wanted to say was, wouldn't this be harder for teammates who play off meta picks to climb up in honor?

I get that you wont demote, but if key fragments are only being dropped through the honor system now ( which I acknowledge was a free reward anyway ), wouldn't that create a environment where players choose not to intentionally honor people because they dislike there gameplay style?

I mostly bring this up because of the 1 honor per game restriction. As far as I'm aware off, you cant even honor your enemy anymore. ( which I always thought was way more honorable than honoring youre teammates lol )

There should not be a 'climb.' The moment it is about a 'climb,' it has failed as a system and Riot as its creators... which would be the second iteration of honor they've turned into an incentive somehow, even if it is just gaudy flair-- we all know the internet loves gaudy flair.

The more appropriate angle here is to say, if you're an honor-worthy player it'll show; and honestly, honor should have at least a little less to do with in-game performance, since even a high performer in a game can get banned for breaking rules, while the 1/7/3 gets off scot-free-- and who knows, their attitude or adherence to map information (even if their performance sux) could make it work.

So no, off-meta builds should not interrupt 'the climb.' The only thing that would make honor difficult to achieve is being one of three things: silent, a rulebreaker, or an unpleasant person to be around.

If all it takes is off-meta builds to tilt someone into a report, they're a whole different problem and wouldn't be giving you honor anyway.

That's a interesting point your bring up. I do agree that it shouldn't be a climb and I worded that poorly. But what you said about silent types also makes me think that the system is catering to a certain type.

I agree that honor worthy players should be honor, but lets be honest now. There is a certain type of player for every game. And league of legends players tend to favors the hard carries, well played, or funnily friendly people. With that being sad, I think the silent majority of players might not be properly honored. Again, not a big deal cause its not about getting rewards, but with this new system I think it tends to create a bias ( unintentionally ) against players who do not meet this criteria.

If all you were getting was a badge, this wouldn't be a big of a deal. In fact I prefer it that way. but because they are giving away keys exclusive for this system, it creates this mindset of "I really want to get that" so players will inevitable chase after those rewards and fill that criteria just get it. Again, it wont punish people for not doing it, all I'm saying is, the real reason I find this a interesting issue, is because of the 1 person honor per game.

Yes honors were giving out like hotcakes before, but with this new system, I do think it scares away people who wanna play off meta ( like singed support with smite lol ) from enjoying the game as much as others. Also I must add, why cant we honor our enemies.

The idea of honor shouldn't be for teammates. Ironically your enemies are the ones who should receive the most honor, cause I think respecting your opponents is just as important as respecting your teammates

Usually the kind of individuals that would refuse Honor for 'not following the Meta' are likely the same kind of people who will find any number of 'alternative' reasons for not Honoring you.

When it comes to 'picks and honor' I wouldn't fret too much. Here, this is one of the greater old examples I feel of this.

If someone could receive honor often enough for a Ribbon via Ranked Teemo only, I think you have nothing to worry about.

Again, this is not for me D: . . . its for a friend lol. Seriously though, I just wanted a discussion about this XD

wanted to know everyone's thought on whether or not you this new honor system creates a specialized type of gameplay. Like sir Fuzzi said before me, I do feel like it creates an incentive rather than it being natural.

also I'm the silent type, lol I hate talking in game, so I usually just mute everyone XD

Even if it didn't have an incentive it would still have it's fair share of unnaturals. The prior Ribbon System really wasn't a 'reward' so much as just a tiny little extra decoration for the frame. People still came out in drives threatening to troll without being promised Honor, being salty over not being Honored, ect.

It's really going to be a devil in the details no matter how many or few Rewards are tied to it.

Even silent types can get some Honor you know. I tend to Honor anyone who works together to pull off all sorts of fun and crazy plays. So for your friend and you there will be plenty of points to be had~.

To be quite honest, I kinda liked the old honor system. It meant that you were a guy that was great to play with. The new honor system doesn't show that as much ( I don't think ). other than you had a lot of great games, it doesn't show for why you were honored.

And I myself don't really honor my teammates, unless they broke there back hard carrying me up some stairs with 2 crippled legs, and a yas adc lol.

And I know a lot of people who feel the same way. The number 1 reason people probably honor others is because of carrying. So I really thought the old honor system had a lot more merits to go with it XD

Mmm, I'm not entirely sure I agree with the 'Why' from the old Honor system. The Ribbon specifics were generally all over the place, and more than a little vague.

Honorable Opponent in particular being the larger problem child I feel. Most people just generally tagged that category in the same "Okay, that was amusing" style that people use the 'Tick' system in current games like Overwatch or Heroes of the storm. But I've never really heard of anyone being HO'd for actual 'honorable' behavior.

Like for example, say someone hard DCs in ARAM on the enemy team. If one person on your side voluntarily steps down and says they'll rejoin when the DC returns; I'd say that extremely honorable. You never really see that brand of behavior rewarded through the old system though.

Additionally the old system eventually came to feel more like a Popularity Contest than actually reflective of anything, but that's just my own bias on the system. I'm sure there's plenty of examples (like the one I linked) to the contrary.

To me the new Honor system doesn't feel any more or less clear than the old one; however it does have the perk of containing more incentives for people to behave. (Loss of Key Frags for R0 is a pretty huge one in my book.).

Tbh, I used to do that in my older days ( leveling 1-30 ) as I thought it was the kind/nice thing to do. I got flamed hard for it by my teammates. That's when I learned.... league of legends players only care about winning XD.

But I guess no matter old or new, every system has its flaws. I do hope they don't leave the new system as is, and continue to make improvements to it as time goes on. I personally would like to have the option to honor my opponents, just because I feel like the community doesn't respect good players. If your team feeds, its never "oh that enemy is good" its always " my team makes suck booty juice". But that's just my own experience
