(Unpopular Opinion) Giants song, has no direction.

It sounds like a mashup of all the different elements of hip-hop, slapped together in hopes to make a good track.

Why are there so many different beat changes? why does the singing dominate majority of the song. Where is the direction you were trying to go with this?

What emotion am I supposed to feel? It goes from hip-hop, to melodic, to trap-ish, to more of a drake style beat, into a horrible transition to more singing. What am I supposed to feel from this song? Hype? Cause I dont feel that at all.

Its really hard to get into, and takes you out of the immersion of the song. The only rappers that do these random switch ups on the flow and beat, are new age rappers. This doesn't sound really hiphop at all. This sounds more pop than anything.

Not to mention, there were barely any notable lyrics. All the rappers did was rhyme. Where are the bars? I was hoping they would drop some freestyles about the world of runterra. Or have ekko talk about how he started in the slums and rasied to the top of the charts.

Or something ya know? all he says is that "A, we are great" "B, you are trash "C, did I mention how great we are". Like I don't know if you guys listen to hiphop, but alot of rappers don't rap about this type of trash.

Most decent rappers have substance to there lyrics. Like blackthought, lupe fiasco, Joe budden. etc. This.... was just some random pop tart song for the masses to enjoy.

it doesn't have any essence of pure hip-hop in it.

Imagine complaining about a pop song that doesn't have the same 4 chords for the entirety of it... Imagine...

When I first heard the song, I didn't hate it, I was just left with an overwhelming "meh whatever" when it ended.

KDA was created because they had a vision for the song in mind, then the skins were created after.

This feels like the opposite, they wanted to make another hip, urban-hip line of skins, and even got LUIS VUITTON on board. wow. The song feels like it came after the skin line... just overall uninspired compared to the first.

When I first heard the KDA track, it was instantly in my ear for days, I've already forgotten how this song goes and I have perfect pitch. (I can remember the "Bwam, ba ba ba ba" bass line .. i guess that's the refrain? but I definitely won't care to hum it in the shower). Also the "im so strong, you so weak" rap part is just so banal and vapid... I duno, maybe I'm just old now, and this track isn't for me (how do you do fellow kids and all that). The like/dislike ratio is certainly indicating that.

If you like the song, that's cool, but I agree with OP on this one.

it's like they made a song for each singer/champion. And then made a mashup and released that. Give each one a spotlight in their own song or pick a Leader (Qiyana) and a Maknae (Ekko) and sell that. Make a True damage ALBUM.

Not that hard, they did it for PentaKayle and that was ONE skin.

I feel like If they removed Yasuo from the video, nobody will notice. What was the point of him being in the video, just to T-pose? Overall not a big fan of the song, It sounds generic at best, something I'll hear on the radio generic...

I hate rap in general tbh, so I hate every part where Ekko stars xD I love the Qiyana and Senna parts. But yeah, the song is nowhere near as good as POP/STARS. It's like they tried to mash many genres together hoping to please as many fans as possible, but it sounds... weird and overall rather bad. Especially the part where Ekko raps on his own (around 02:40) and the music just outright changes... At first I thought I accidentally switched videos

EDIT: I think people are downvoting me because I said I dislike rap? Like c'mon guys WTF does it bother you THAT much? EDIT2: Apparently it does. Well who cares, that's just my opinion. I dislike rap. [slayer-jinx-unamused]

It feels like they were trying to replicate KDA in a weird way, but making more rap parts since Akali's part was so popular.

Notice that Qiyana's solo singing part is very similar to Ahris solo singing parts in how they interrupt the beat and flow.

The singers also didn't work together nearly as well as KDA's singers.

Let's be honest - Hip Hop isn't even music in this day and age.

If you want real music, one with melody, lyrics, and a rhythm, you're better off listening to Rock, Metal, Classical, or another genre where the people make music because they're passionate about it and not to shove commercial crap at people's face.

Everyone has their own opinions. I heard K/DA's song BEFORE seeing the video and even though I adore K-pop I found it to be lackluster compared to literally anything Black Pink does. Didn't exactly hype me up, it was mostly the same shit from True Damage "We rule, you drool". The biggest difference to me comes from the art direction where its sex appeal versus pretty neon colors. In a world of thottery I enjoyed the True Damage visuals a bit more than the K/DA ones. Only a bit though, because both K/DA and True Damage have some pretty sexy art (art team just killin it). Song wise I think you'll lean toward whatever genre you prefer. That and more than a few people are unwilling to admit their bias for their preferred champions in the band (in this case I too am guilty). I never expected a Hip Hop band to overtake a K-Pop band in a League of Legends game since the community is mostly weebs anyway but I do think the song is a solid 7-8/10.

I can't comment on personal taste, but I can share an interesting video on the project.

This guy did a nice breakdown of some of techniques used within the song

There was alot of effort put into this song that this video helps illuminate

It was like 4 different songs put together in a wierd order. Felt unbalanced. No proper beat was given. Personally, KDA was better.

It's "radio rap". Lol. It has no substance because modern mainstream hip hop doesn't. They nailed what they were going for - a song that's both on the local rap station and top 40.

I kinda liked it. Tho I'm upset that they didnt have somone play as yasuo but just another rando rapper litteraly 5 singers and noone singing as yasuo

It sounds like a mashup of all the different elements of hip-hop, slapped together in hopes to make a good track.

That's kinda the point. Not that most people have looked, but this is what True Damage Akali's flavor text reads:

After the worldwide success of K/DA, Akali made it her mission to recruit accomplished and up-and-coming artists to form a new supergroup: True Damage. Never before has a crew been comprised of such diverse talent, ranging from natural lyricists to renowned producers to legendary vocalists... all ready to disrupt the music industry.

Also, I think you're reading a little too much into this and that your expectations are a little too high. This is a hip hop song being produced by a gaming company, after all. I don't think they could've done a better job without just paying off a regular rap producer and slapping their name on the finished product. I also think they were probably aware of that going in and just wanted to make something that was, as you put it, "just some random pop tart song for the masses to enjoy".

I really don't think it's meant to be for enthusiasts like you; it's more just for people who might be called "casuals" when it comes to music. I don't think there's anything particularly wrong with that, and I think it does well what it's supposed to do. You have many valid points, but I think that the standards you hold Riot to are a bit unfair, all things considered.

This isn't an unpopular opinion but I agree.

Pretty sure KDA didn't have direction either. IDK I really liked both songs regardless. I don't like most rap songs or most hiphop but I really liked kda and giants. It might just be because I like league content but these songs hit different than most other hip hop songs I have listened to. The chorus with Senna was absolutely fantastic, and I really like songs with a strong chorus so that might be a big reason.

PzyXo11/11/2019, 4:41:10 PM1 votes

The song is trash lol, my opinion. Only the "Ekko" did well, others were so trash. + They literally took the idea of beat switch from Quadeca/Randolph/Logan Paul. What am I supposed to expect from that? a company that copies Logan Paul? Nothing. So? Imma give it 3/10 just because of Ekko. Otherwise its so bad.

I know I'm hella late and prob no one is gonna even read this BUT IMA SHOOT MY SHOT REAL QUICK

So first, I remember Riot's music team saying in promo talks/posts that this true damage project was going to be an extremely ambitious attempt and they were going to be trying to create something never really seen before and while their execution of that may have stumbled in places... They delivered exactly what they said they would deliver... So people in this thread and elsewhere being like "This song is all over the place and doesn't know what it wants to be" Yea... the song knows exactly what it wants to be... It's just not what YOU want it to be.

The video seems to be set in a futuristic alternate reality Runeterra where the whole map is like one giant city? Like New York and the Regions being like boroughs in it? I could be wrong but anyway, the heavy cyberpunk aesthetic do a lot to justify the beat for me. That's not a modern-day beat, that's not something you will EVER hear in any rap/pop song today... Listening to the instrumental is weird af but the lyrics fit into it with such perfection that you have to see it as a sort of fictional musical style of the futuristic world TD exists in. Almost as if the team was saying "In that reality, this is what good music sounds like."

About the lyrics... After listening to it about 5 times I was like "Wait... who is Ekko even dissing?" And after 10 more listens I came to the conclusion that it must have been written with the actual LoL game in mind and it's like dissing the enemy team and that actually added a layer of respect to it for me. I was hoping for Qianna's lines to be in Spanish and Akali's in Korean for that mass appeal with both of them having minimal English mixed in but that only went 50% as hoped. I thought that they would have made more use of Becky-G and Keke since they bring that star power but I guess Becky-G gets paid by the syllable or something because they barely used her in this song... Instead they put most of the emphasis on the little-known in comparison Thutmose and Duckwrth, who were both phenomenal but just felt so out of their weight class next to the girls.

Lastly I wanna just slide in to defend the tempo switch-up in this song... I LOVE WHEN SONGS DO THIS!! It just draws me right back into the song with a fresh mood, fresh rhythm, fresh enthusiasm it's the same song but from a different angle and I cant say just how much I love it when this happens... (it's what got me into travis scott, he loves that shit and I'm all for it) Personal preferences aside tho, I get how having that tonal shift in a song that's already all over the place is like... a bit extra... but it's admitted by me at least that this project does falter in places, it's not perfect, it's ambitious and I love it for that and I'm praying that it hits 200m views by this time next year, it doesn't have to beat out popstars, just needs to be in it's league.

And with that... I've shot my shot... Damn it would be so sick if they got travis scott on like Lucian or something for a solo rap... ok I should probably stop typing.
