Pre-30 BLOWS

Seriously, I tried to level a new account from 1-30... and it's so frustrating and not fun.

The main frustration? Runes/Masteries... that system is old... and stupid... just give us all 30 of both...goodness it's obnoxious.

I agree it blows, but not for the reason you gave. Masteries should be unlocked as you go, it adds to the feeling of progression for a non smurf player. Runes are fine as well, since you can only buy them with IP.

What sucks pre-30 is the ridiculous number of bots in ARAM's. Can't tell you how many games I've been in where its me and one other actual player in a 10 man game.

I would disagree on runes... The Tier 1 and 2 runes are a COMPLETE waste of IP, and a bit of a noob trap. Which leaves anyone that knows better (whether smurfing, or having been told by a friend that is ranked) at a disadvantage until lvl 20 (where you can get T3 runes), at which point they should generally have the overall advantage due to having better runes...

So I'd say lvl 1-20 is pretty bad, with 20-30 just taking an obscene amount of time but not really being THAT bad.

I am pretty new to playing the game, but I've got 2 roommates who've played since season 1 and they both told me not to buy runes until I could get T-3 ones, for the same reasons you mention.

In my opinion a new player shouldn't even worry about runes or who has an advantage in competitive play until they're level 30 anyway. I am finding I'd rather just worry about improving my mechanics and positioning as I learn the game. Runes I'll worry about when I'm 30 and am looking to really master specific champions.

We can agree to disagree for now.

The disadvantage you put yourself at from not getting runes (at lvl 20) is pretty massive against someone that has even T1 or T2 runes. I'm Gold V, and I would legit say that I'd lose lane somewhat convincingly to a Silver player if they had runes and I didn't.

Not to mention that you mention mastering specific champions and working on mechanics. Well, there are some things that you simply CAN NOT do without Runes, particularly if the enemy does have runes.

If you'd like a suggestion for 2 rune pages that will cover nearly EVERY champion in the game, feel free to hit me up in game and I can help you out with that, but you really DON'T want to go through completely runeless once you hit lvl 20.

This is specifically why I said I'll wait til I'm able to get T-3 runes before attempting to master specific champions. Until then I'll worry about trying to be a better last hitter, and my overall positioning in given situations. I think those things are better foundations for making me the best player I can be than runes.

Do you play MMORPG's or something? Or are you one of those guys who levels up in COD multiple times? This makes no sense to me... "feeling of progression" is a worthless time-sink.

There is a "feeling of progression" involved in any game where a character/avatar/account goes through levels of development, it's inherent, it's built in. and it's not a "time-sink" if you have to spend the time anyway. I'm not sure you understand what a time-sink actually is...A time sink would be taking time in the game to do something that took me away from leveling. I'm not even sure why you'd mention time sink in this thread really lol.

If I'm going to be leveling anyway (which you do simply by playing the game) then it makes sense for the developers to have aspects of the game in place to make that process feel more rewarding. That is, to enhance the feeling that I'm accomplishing something as I progress through levels, or the "feeling of progression". That's a pretty basic no-brainer, really. So having players unlock mastery points as they are leveling just gives them one more thing to look forward to beyond their level going up one number. This makes the experience more meaningful in a small way and helps make it seem less like a grind.

Sorry if this stuff is a little over your head, bud.

That's the thing though, in this game there's no need for "leveling". Just let us earn IP because NOT having a full set of ruins and masteriest BLOWS and makes this game not fun.

Btw sorry if I used the term wrong. My mistake. I honestly thought it meant anything that was a waste of time. Which I consider leveling to be in this game. Just let us earn IP to get runes and let us set up masteries from day one. No need to bar people off of them for eons.

So far from the truth.

There's a bot problem cuz people don't wanna grind up through 1-30 because it's a horribly obnoxious waste of time just to get to the real game.

The entire leveling system needs to go away. Is this supposed to be an RPG or a fighting game, because I've been given the impression that it's the latter. In that case, having levels makes absolutely no sense and only serves as what people have rightly described as a pointless time sink. For anyone that is a fan of the classic Street Fighter type games, how enjoyable would they be if they all included the same months long leveling process before you could begin playing the full game?

If they really want to have a leveling system, fine, but they should make it meaningful, not the pointless grind before the real game that it is now. Everyone starts at level 1 with full masteries and rune slots. There is no level cap, and gaining levels now gives additional stat boosts for your account that you get to choose. These boosts would be similar to those given by runes, i.e. +health/lvl, armor pen, +ap, etc., but would apply globally. You could think of them as an overarching theme for your account whereas rune pages are for fine tuning for individual matches. These boosts would then taper off as you increased in level at a logarithmic rate. What this means is that at early levels you get large boosts, but those boosts reach a soft cap at a point that you can tune by adjusting the logarithm's curve. You could continue increasing beyond the soft cap, but the returns would be greatly diminished. This would mean that at some set point, say level 30, players would be at generally equal power level and would be able to compete with players even many levels above them, but it would still give incentive to increase in levels as it would increase your power level, if only at incrementally smaller and smaller amounts.

I feel like this could add a lot more actual dynamics to the game and could reduce a lot of problems people seem to have with things like smurf accounts. Why would I waste time on some level 10 account when I could be on my level 87 main pushing it to even higher power levels? You could also add simple things like resetting your stat boosts for some IP cost so you wouldn't be permanently set in a role.

So I'm level 9 and im getting sworn / cursed / yelled at because I didn't help fast enough to get dragon? Or because I didn't roam at the correct time?

What the hell? I'm still trying to last hit correctly and people are trying to rip my face off in chat because I don't understand the advanced strategy or tactics that I guess EVERYONE BUT ME KNOWS NOT LIKE IVE HAD THE GAME FOR ABOUT 2 WEEKS

Forget the runes and how expensive stuff is in the game. I get the feeling that a lot of people at these low levels are actually pretty good at it and probably have level 30's. I'd bet that about 3 people per game of Summoners Rift are actually new people and the rest are just starting a new account.

It's really not fun to play against vets of this game / this type of game.

Account level and unlocks need to be removed completely. They only encourage bots, and are a competitive disadvantage next to Heroes of the Storm and Dota 2.
