Galio will become competitively sought-after when the Mage update rolls around.
Seriously. The biggest counter to AP in the game, and when the inevitably strong new Mages are released, you'll be seeing quite a lot of this discolored gargoyle.

Galio might end up being part of the mage update
That thread has a post where one of the Riot staffers has stated that Galio will not be part of the Mage update.. That is for the mages like Malz, Vel, etc.. The true mages not the hybrids like Galio and Vlad.
Zed and Talon, and Veigar counter mages as well. Hopefully Riot will actually balance the mages with the rest of the meta.
It's just too bad that fighters and tanks only need one MR item and some HP to make all but true DPS mages do next to no damage to them. And all the true DPS mages are pretty bad right now save for
