I feel so frustrated trying to play Gangplank.

I can't win lane, I can't win matches, I can't do jack with GP. His q is short and really just falls of fast the moment the other top laner starts getting any armor, the barrels are USELESS - almost everyone's learned how to play around them. The on the range is so obvious and if your opponent happens to be ranged the chances of your parrrley beating them feels like 0 (and if they've got mobility forget hitting anything in general). It feels like either the projectile speed or animation on parrrley races at the speed of a snail. The heal on the oranges feel insignificant as they seem to only delay my inevitable death. As for Cannon Barrage, it feels... meh. Sometimes it's useful and sometimes people just walk out like nothing happened. At the end of the day I don't feel as if I'm doing much damage with all my damage items, I can't seem to duke it out with anyone, and all the farming I do feels worthless. It's like playing a markmans without arm pen and no range. I want to play this champ because of his character, but I'm really starting to doubt his use as a champion.

He is extremely hard to pull off honestly but very rewarding if you can be in the small percent that does. I've gotten to the point where I'm able to do somewhat ok and understand how chaining barrels work.

First off, when you place down a barrel, don't place it down near the enemy, they will hit it, what you do is place down the barrel at your feet, then place another near the enemy and shoot, or hit the barrel by your feet. This is how you use the barrels and land more barrels on the enemy.

Placing the barrels down beside them has an arm time which puts you at risk, and the chance of getting it off before the enemy does isn't that good, so using the step above guarantee's that you should almost always be the one triggering the barrels.

Gangplank sucks until he gets Tri Force really, I'd argue until he also gets a 2nd item like Infinity Edge, but his global threat is pretty good if you can land the center of your ult onto other laners.

Anyhow, practice the barrel trick. Place one by your feet, quickly throw one down where you think your enemy will walk and shoot the one by your feet, but make sure the barrels are in that little circle radius from one another or they wont chain.

Another cool trick you can try is where you place one barrel, then another one. When the enemy moves forward to destroy the barrel, you shoot the first one and immediately plant one right on top of them. Because of the delay between chaining barrels exploding the third barrel will get chained and blow up. It can really catch people off-guard and is killer later on in the game where your barrels chunk hard.

Gangplank is not really an early game champ at all. You need to build Tri + IE before you start doing significant damage (the power spike from these two items is real).

Start getting a Sheen first since your Q applies on hit abilities and can crit. Use this to harass your target, or to avoid harass by CSing with it if you're against something that hits hard and out sustain's you.

As far as barrel placing goes, I usually keep one in the bushes. Then when they come close enough, I drop another one really fast, Q the hidden barrel and watch their health plummet.

Your W should be used to stay in lane longer (beware of mana though). Don't only use it when you're about to die, use it when you're starting to get low so they feel less inclined to all-in you. It also removes stuns, which is great against champs like Pantheon.

GP's ult is my favorite. Watch your other lanes periodically and see when they'll need it (It's global!). If you see your jg ping that they are going to gank another lane, drop your ult on the enemies when your jg gets there and watch them die (assist gold is awesome!). If you're getting turret dived, ult on top of yourself and watch them die from turret shots.
