The New Gangplank Splash Looks Vastly Different

Large full lips, overly protruding cheekbones, a kooky hat, and a general appearance that screams brute/grunt rather than intelligent and menacing captain. While I've no true quarrel with his attire, his face is something that'll never be agreeable with me. It's very obviously the same new direction that was shown on Fiora's new splash. Shortly put, I'm not a fan of these extremes. The Splash face looks nothing like the model and barely bears a resemblance to the Burning Tides epilogue art.

He doesn't look like Gangplank and doesn't exude the qualities of who Gangplank is. This whole "Gangplank died" thing has been a disaster from disabling Gangplank to this new (vastly inferior and I dare say out of place looking) base look. I'm already getting the skin but if feels off using a skin to depict the real version of the character, almost like Trundle.

Well, I dare say surviving an explosion that killed everyone else on board would give at least some reason as to why he looks as he does now.

Hmm, I'd say you can somewhat justify him looking different, the new gangplank doesn't seem like a captain at all, which is somewhat fitting. I'm guessing the new skin is a few years after the current events in Bilgewater, given that he has a shiny new metal arm and looks a lot more ragged. Its likely at this point he isn't even a captain anymore, he's just a man with no crew or followers to speak of. I think this kind of makes sense because like you said Gangplank is smart, he wouldn't go immediately try and reclaim his titles, Bilgewater is to cutthroat for such a thing to work, he's a feared man with no allies and no followers, in a world like Bilgewater the only place that'll leave you is dead in a gutter with your throat slit. There's a reason he paid the doc for secrecy, if anybody found out he was alive they're more likely to try and kill him to make a name for themselves then to help him, he literally has nothing left to his name. He'd also have to deal with Miss Fortune, who has an entire crew and powerful ship behind her. Gangplank would have to go into hiding if he wanted to survive after the explosion.

I can't understand why his base skin needs to be changed to this at all. It would make more sense to leave it as a separate skin rather than using it to replace his default classic look in it's entirety. I mean they didn't make captain fortune the base miss fortune so why does gangplank need to be changed to fit the event lore?

I have to agree. Look at captain gangplank. His cheek bones look flat and his lips, thin. He looked old but still had a chiseled face. Now his cheekbones look so defined and fleshy. More like an orc or ogre than his previous tanned old sailor face.

If you told me this was the splash for a new champion, I wouldn't think twice about it. Still an awesome job by riot. ;)

I'm not really a fan of the new VU he's just got. I enjoyed the updated splash before this one. Bummer with the art style the way they're going with older champions it seems. I think it's bad when you have so many threads about it for two VU's in a row. (fiora and now GP) I would really start to reconsider the practices going forward. To each their own though, I don't play GP so I won't have to use his skins/splash art.

The splash art right after his rework was SO - MUCH - BETTER. It really reflected GP's menacing and manipulative captain persona.
