How does normal MMR work.

I'm ranked Gold 1, but every normal game (or at least when I started keeping track 5 games ago) has had anywhere from at least 1 to at most 5 Diamond players. I'm not complaining, because I'm still doing well and it's nice to see how to play against higher elo players, but it doesn't make much sense.

It's separate from Ranked MMR, but works the same way. Goes up when you win down when you lose.
