Why has Riot not tried to fix deathrecap?

Weathered··116 votes·3,702 views

Death recap can be such a useful tool, and when it DOES work it almost always has me building differently based on what kind of damage was done. However, it is almost always inaccurate, and usually doesn't even add up to enough damage to kill you. All it really does now is tell you what KIND of damage was done, not the amount or why you died.

On top of that, death recap doesn't even feel like a difficult thing to program. The damage is already calculated when you take it, so why can't the game just store those numbers? Instead the numbers feel like they are trying to be remembered and given estimates.

This problem has been around for a LONG time, and I can't remember when death recap was 100% accurate even 85% of the time. Can we please focus on fixing this?

+1 if you thought this was another thread complaining about the AP item changes.

Weathered2 votes

Someone else said this. ...how?

bill848 votes

Yep, thought it said deathcap, and then continued to think that for the first two sentences.

Death recap isn't difficult to program... if you aren't a Riot employed programmer. They have difficulty with even the most basic programming tasks.

TotalJerk4 votes

Are you a programmer, by any chance?

has 2k health. says damage taken was

113 250 500

2k where what how?

Weathered2 votes

I know xD. People always say "where did my health go?" when they are bursted. But for real, looking at the death recap you are still like "where tf did my health go for real?"

part of the problem, aside from clear bugs where krugs kill you when the krugs arent even there, is that it only shows the "top" 3 damage from each source. So say illaoi does 500 with tentacle slams, 400 auto, and her passive tentacles did 800 cause you were a vessel whos bad at doging. Looks great, but you were a tank with 2500 health or whatever. It wouldnt show ignite, or damage stolen from grasp of the undying, etc etc. Maybe she had a bork because she was a bad illaoi, and its passive didnt show up either.

One thing ive read that im very much for is scrap death recap almost entirely, and give a pie chart break down of what damage type killed you. If you dove tower of course its gonna be mostly physical, but if you get burst by the enemy team you can see how much was physical, how much was magic, and how much or how little the true damage was, and then build accordingly.

Weathered1 votes

I pie chart would be perfect

Vistha Kai7 votes

The funny thing is that they fixed it already.

Then it got fucked up again two patches later.

Like I'm a 4k HP tank that gets focused by whole enemy team for like 20 seconds. I die.

Death recap be like, "Hurr durr 300 damage taken in the last 0.63 second(s)." and I'm like, "What the actual f-".

A Miss Fortune9 votes

"Krugs did 1,100 true damage with **vladimirultpoolpassive **in 0.30 seconds"

Vistha Kai2 votes

I wouldn't be surprised if somebody died that way already.

A Miss Fortune2 votes

Yeah, I died like that.

Krugs never attacked me. Nobody hit me with true damage. Wasn't even a Vladimir in the game.

Don't ask me how death recap messed that up.

WarlockLaw4 votes

At least revive stopped killing people...though i have had heal and flash show up

ChaosThief2 votes

"Revive also did 48 magic damage and you assisted on yourself."

Death Recap is the Azir of League in game tools. Somethings going to go wrong with it every patch.

Death recap doesn't even tell you 'that' information correctly (the kind of damage done). Often times I get something like Lucian's Basic Attack dealt True Damage to me. The same champion assisting a kill on you that killed you, in two brackets at the same time. An all-physical damage being listed as 1600+ Magic Damage done to you.

A little explanation on death recap (to illustrate why it's not always "accurate").

I believe death recap tracks damage done to you in the past 10 seconds or so. It will not always add up to your full health because you may not have started at full health 10 seconds prior due to being poked down, fighting minions/neutral camps, etc. You could argue that death recap should include this, but they you have the issue of regenerating health back up in that time period and the possibility of you healing through abilities (does THAT go on death recap to make the numbers match?). Death recap also looks at only the top 3 sources of damage from three or enemies. Obviously, with champions having possibly 6 sources of damage and it being possible to have taken damage from more than 3 sources, some info is omitted.

Case in point: death recap measurements do not always add up to 100% of your max health or represent all the damage you took, but they try to represent the most largest and most recent sources of damage applied.

Well with 6 damage dealing items and smite+ignite, on a champ with 6 damaging abilities, a single champion couls have potentially 14 different damage sources. That's not easy to account for.

Thats not an issue who cares when they smited you and dealth 100 true damage then used botrk for another 200 physical etc etc.

People want to know whether they got blasted for 4k magic damage with by Brand & Annie Or wheter it was Caitlyn 2 shotting them with 2k crits

But right now we see shit like you were killed by summoner 21 for 6 true damage . . .

I agree 100%

The highest damage sources need to be shown.

And I think cc should be shown on the side as well.

Myozthirirn1 votes

they should just show the %

-44% magic damage (880) -52% physical damage (1040) -9% true damage (180) +5% healed/shielded (100) 7.2 seconds Most damage dealt by: Caitlyn (40%) | Ahri (31%) | {{summoner:17}} (18%)

Recomended items: item 3143 item 3026 item 1011

EDIT: formating, garrison = non champion damage

Agreed. That's a great idea.

In fact I would be happy even if they told you overall what percent of damage taken was physical/magical/true so you can counterbuild that.

Cause you are still buying their products and they don't have to listen to you as long as they are getting their money.

Weathered6 votes

They don't have to create a new client either, but that's already happening. They also didn't have to introduce a system of free skins, but ya know.

A new client for their benefit.

And the system of free skins is barely ever a benefit for the community but more of an interest to the company considering the fact that most players have reported that key fragments are difficult to comeby and with the player base being impatient they are more likely to buy keys than try to earn them.

Especially considering the fact that players who have reported to be toxic cannot get these awards for free and will buy keys and boxes to make up for it, despite it being a gamble where you might end up spending more money than actually getting a skin for free.

Not going to argue about this. I came here to talk about death recap.

A ton of shit? Maybe to a low level intellectual like you, but it's actually only one topic and it's the community and their inconsistency in what they want in the game.

I remember when the summoner spell Revive use to deal the most damage to me..... ah those were the days. But seriously, give this person a cookie for bringing this up. Accurate death recaps with details of how you were killed would be immensely helpful and could double as a thing to do/read/look at while you wait for the rest of the week to respawn (little bit of death timer humor, need to use it while I still can since they are shortening them).

Weathered1 votes

Thanks. It's always bothered me how it can be so inaccurate xD

i think the biggest problem for me with this is the minions. if i kill someone lvl 2 but then die, it only displays damage taken for a single caster minion instead of all 6 that were attacking me

Retillin2 votes

Until they come up with an idea to put a Skin on Death Recap, they won't rework it.

Weathered2 votes

xD good point. If they don't want to overhaul it though, they can at least make it more accurate than its pretty bad state now.

Project Riven2 votes

Doesn't death recap only show 3 skills of an enemy and only 3 enemies? If it is, then you have your answer.

GaleWinUnleashed2 votes

60% of the time, it works every time.

Sintama2 votes

So you're trying to tell me that caster minion DIDN'T do 18,000 damage in True Damage with "BadPassive"? Are you sure?

Thumpin2 votes

Because fixing death recap does not directly get them any money.

They are working on a new client though.

I love the mixed damage category. I think just seeing a direct 'Fuck you!' on the recap tab would be kinder to players.

Only Play Darius1 votes

I'm pretty sure i'm smarter than the death recap. It's saying that Vi is doing mixed damage to me.

rtbf2256182411 votes

The problem is that it shows the insignificant damage you took, such as 12% + 30% and 5 % or so not the biggest parts instead.

BurnSnake1 votes

Don't you love it when it says Karthus 's ult is a status effect

skullzx71 votes

The glitchiest I get as EVERY time I play Zac and die after my passive procs, saying I'm taking magic damage from basic attacks and true damage from flash.

What?

Synnx71 votes

This shows how much incompetence riot shows, as a company. They admitted they fixed it, when instead they didnt
