The Aatrox rework did not end up delivering a more healthy design than the old Aatrox.

You could say that the old Aatrox was an unbalanceable stat checker that had to be kept in the gutter or else he'd be an overwhelming, pick or ban champion.

There's a point to be made there, and he definitely did need a rework.

Thing is, you can say the same goddamn thing about the reworked Aatrox.

  • 82% pick/ban rate in 2018 regular split.
  • 99% pick/ban rate at 2018 worlds.
  • 100% competitive pick/ban rate in 2019 as of January 24th.
  • 93% pick/ban rate in competitive since the rework dropped.

This is what happens when the reworked Aatrox is viable

So obviously he's completely and utterly broken in this iteration. Fine, what are Riot doing to fix it?

Well, they're beating him over the head with the nerf hammer.

  • He lost his level 2 cheese when they made his second E charge start on CD.
  • He lost his ability to initiate with his revive when they reduced its duration, since it no longer lasts long enough for him to die in its duration.
  • On PBE, he's about to lose his ability to have any lane sustain at all. You know, his healing. The one thing that has always identified the champion.

Hell, there's probably more nerfs on the way.

If the reworked Aatrox isn't overbearing, he simply won't be usable at all.

Old Aatrox was an unbalaceable mess in the gutter, new Aatrox is an unbalanceable mess in the spotlight.

Congratulations, you took a Mordekaiser/Urgot/Yorick and turned him into a Kalista/Azir/Ryze.

I fail to see how this champion is completely overbearing and completely unbalanceable when they've only been out for half a year.

side note: riot often throws up multiple changes to the PBE to see which one they like, not all of them will go through

edit: especially since they spent most of that in """preseason""" which this year was just an excuse to change like 2 things and then not release any updates for a while.

well Irelia and Akali have been out for more or less the same amount of time and we've apparently made that verdict on them already

I personally haven't but idk about you

I'm using "we" in the not-personal sense. It seems to be a common sentiment here. I think Irelia and Akali can be salvaged with not a lot of effort, I just don't care for how Riot has approached it so far.

"Only" half a year.

Akali has been out for less time than that. Would you say the jury's still out on whether she's a healthy design?

Also, Riot very rarely pulls changes.

When it's something this big, I can think of exactly three times that has happened.

  • Lee Sin rework (did that even get on PBE?)
  • Riven "Edge" rework.
  • Lissandra "Infinite Mana" passive.

I'd say yes, I believe she can still be saved through tweaking.

Tell me what "isn't healthy design" about aatrox.

Also, Riot very rarely pulls changes.

lmfao https://i.gyazo.com/aa02e6f04c1016d27e84237173110ae6.png from here

Do you see these changes in the patch notes?

So tweaked damage is on par with reworks and the removal of mechanics...

...sure.

Marshbouy1 votes

You said "riot very rarely pulls changes" and it took me less than 2 minutes to find a change that they pulled. When I did, you shift the goal posts because it isn't a just a "change" it's the "removal of mechanics"

counterpoint: making an ability start on cooldown is just tweaked CDs.

Lol sure buddy.

Notice how everything I list is a large scale change, rework of some description, or new effect?

I definitely missed a few (Shojin, Atmas, others I'm not thinking of right now), but shit like "-8 damage", the kind of thing you straight up don't notice, is deliberately left out because it just doesn't matter.

Goalposts never moved, you just didn't read.

uhhh, you're the one who isn't reading.

these are all state changes or rebalances. We're talking about AATROX, not other things

Bârd1 votes

Yeah, massive state changes that remove entire avenues of play because the entire reason they worked in the first place was gone.

He can't go hyper-aggro in lane anymore since his level 2 powerspike is delayed enough that even if he gets the level up first, the other guy will level up in time.

He can't go hyper-aggro in teamfights anymore since he can't rely on his ult to bring him back anymore.

He can't turn bad trades into good ones by healing up between them, since he doesn't have lane sustain anymore.

With those things gone, this isn't Aatrox. This isn't even Boris. It's a husk of what those two champions were.

TL;DR: "he can be punished for mistakes now"

True, it didn't go through this patch.

It happened multiple patches ago.

lmfao, guess i'm just r%%%%%ed xd

I don't know about everyone else, but I actually think akali can be fun to fight. She no worse, even when she was op, than a fed fizz.

boricCentaur11 votes

Yeah but the thing you're missing is way more people enjoy playing the new one.

Moody P4 votes

That isn't something you can prove. Aatrox has had very good play rates whenever he wasn't stigmatized as a shit champion. New Aatrox continues to have a high play rate likely because he is stigmatized as a strong champion.

A lot of people have reacted negatively to Aatrox rework, myself included. Very vocally, too

Bârd3 votes

Because the new one has been kept overpowered instead of in the gutter.

It's true though, not sure why you are being down voted.

I think they went in the right direction to take him away from being a troll pick (pre-rework) tho I don't think they went about it correctly.
