Making Support more fun to play

Goal: make the support role more fun to play, reduce wait time in que

Idea: make supports stronger

Means: Give Supports gold income items that give sufficient gold as long as they don't farm. Get rid of items that sacrefice a lot of it's power to buff allies.

Result: -More fun for support players -More support players -Shorter average que time _ Edited to clarify my idea, March 02. 2016_

original post: I like playing support but when I pick top or adc first choice and support second I get support about 9 out of 10, this is not acceptable. The problem is that the team bonus items make support champs horribly weak because it basically sacrefices your stats/your gold to boost your allies and make you weak as shit!!! So easiest way to make support more fun is GET RID OF THOSE TEAM BONUS ITEMS. Let the support be tanky and/or deal damage and more people would enjoy playing support especially since you don't have to farm 24/7 which is one of the fun aspects about playing support.

You want items that make you as powerful as a laner but on a support's budget? So why don't the laners just use all their gold to buy those support items first and deal even more damage while still leaving supports in the dust?

I think support is the funnest role in the game right now. You don't have to worry about CS (unless you have relic shield, but that's easy), you get to roam the map and help with ganks, you can make game saving plays, and you get to harass the enemy team. How much more fun could it be?

I completely understand the "making supports more fun to play"... Support champs tend to vary in how fun they are and how to make the most out of them which is very well and good but the fact is those don't seem to apply to alot of people... But anyways heres just a few of my opinions on your suggestions/ideas...

Make supports stronger. Firstly for this you would need to define a good baseline for what counts as a strong supp... which if you hadn't guessed wouldnt be easy cos of the number of varying opinions... Then you need to draw everyone in line with that base line which in itself has some balance issues due to the difference in how supports play...

Give Supports gold income items that give sufficient gold as long as they don't farm. ^this I agree 100%... Supports need a better gold income... I mean they dont usually farm at all and the current gold boosts usually ten to leave us way behind everyone else if we don't take full advantage of every opportunity no matter how risky...

Get rid of items that sacrefice a lot of it's power to buff allies. This I believe is a huge mistake... I mean you could just as easily buff the personal boosts these items give a little so its not a complete tradeoff... The reason for this is some support players like to take advantage of these items that provide boosts to their allies and by removing these you would be risking turning those people away from support.

But if you really want to bring in more supports what you really need to change is the community view of supports and people learning the ropes of support... The amount of times I've been raged at by an ADC for stealing farm cos my Sona Q accidentally took some of their farm or how many times some members of my team has expected me (while playing nami) to engage or even how if the ADC dies whatever happens half of the time its gonna be blamed on me or worst of all the ADC telling me how to play support and when what they tell me to do fails they get angry.... These kinds of experiences are usually what makes support an unpleasant role to play. If you really want more supports people need to be nicer to the ones we have.

On a side note... let people experiment with using champs that arent your "usual supports"... you might be pleasantly surprised... (key word there being "might")

I'm sorry but as a support main i need to disagree. The whole point of the role is to be dedicated to helping and enhancing the rest of the team, not being a primary damage dealer. While a support Alistair might need to be the tank, there are items built for this that allow supports armor, MR, and health. We don't need the damage, we need the aoe stat boosts and the utility.

Ex: if support Janna builds like a Luden's first item and then moves on to more AP items for damage rather than sightstone or a Locket, then she's no longer a support, she's a mid.

You can still build whatever you want when you play support if you want of course, you just won't actually be supporting with the damaging items, you're aiming more for carrying with that type of build.

Hope this helps, and this is all meant in sincerity without condescension or sarcasm ^-^ just hoping to help and clear things up

"Make supports stronger"

Meanwhile Tahm, Janna, and Soraka are permaban tier.

Supports are fun.

You have Tank, Utility, and Damage supports.

All of each being uniquely differently and fun to play/use. I have no idea why you think they need to be made "fun" or are weak

Your asking to make supports something that arn't supports. And supports simply can't work on lane level gold. If you put that gold on an item, and other laners would pick up that item. And because a laner's gold is dependent on their skill to CS, you can't reconcile Support gold around all Elo's. (Someone: "I don't see why they should have APC level gold." Me: "no, you have Support level gold.") Supports probably have much smaller disparity at lower Elo, than in pro play.

And really, the best supports, are already the ones who don't even need items. (with a thresh, he needs boots, and a sight stone) And some supports can be exceptional tanks, just from their abilities alone. (Braum, Alistar)

Also give double or triple IP etc dependinf on how often played.

"I like playing support but when I pick top or adc first choice and support second I get support about 9 out of 10, this is not acceptable." I support this and want something done as for supports being loaded with gold I can do without a support sona, annie 1 shotting me everytime I farm support can be fun it just depends what you make of it I for 1 love to be the play maker I often carry games ganking top jung and mid as poppy support

I feel like you have a fundamental misunderstanding of just what supports do. Being a support isn't about dealing tons of damage or being super tanky. Quite the opposite, in fact. It's about purposefully sacrificing your own power for the good of the team. Honestly, that's just not something that appeals to a lot of people, and no amount of ideas or balance changes are ever going to fix that.

That's not to say that there's nothing that we can do to fix the issues of the enjoyability of playing support and queue times. There is a very simple solution and one that I would actually say that only we, the players can do. What is it? Easy: Show appreciation. If your support dives in to save you and keep your killing spree intact, say thank you. Let them know that you noticed that ward they placed that got you a kill or stopped the enemy team from sneaking dragon. Apologize if you make a mistake that gets you or them killed, and don't jump down their throats if they make one. Actually buy a vision ward once or twice during the game.

As someone who has played support in pretty much every video game I've ever played, the hardest and most frustrating part is always feeling unappreciated. Even worse is when you're invisible up until you make the smallest error (or perceived error) and your teammates open the gates of hell on you for it. I know this happens regardless of role, but most other roles can point to their kills or CS as an indicator of how well they're doing. On the other hand, a support's efforts are largely invisible from a stats perspective and so are sadly ignored by a lot of players. Support mains know what we contribute, but it warms our cold, dead hearts to know that our team does, too.

you mean something like item 3303 ?

well that item exists and it is ... oh wonder also picked as a midlaner ....

as long as you can't make it work for support ONLY ... it won't work

If supports were to be more popular, then a major overhaul would be necessary.

I mean, the "popular" supports are either a complete nightmare abonimation (Tahm Kench), replace > 50% of champ pools (Thresh), or just "stale and boring" to play as/against (Lulu/Raka). Supports are either super flashy (and nightmarish) to go against, or so subtle that no one sees anything.

If people prefer dealing damage and you are expecting a role that's not damage-oriented to be popular? Oh come on.

The Loveless2/8/2016, 7:28:31 PM1 votes

There's a reason people prefer playing tanks and mages. There's just not many supports who are up to date that are exciting to play.

BestTristMyHaus3/15/2016, 9:17:48 PM1 votes

If the goal is to increase gold to supports, why not just call for Doran's to get a small version of "spoils of war" but with more charges. Or, why not give Relic Shield Cull's passive, but base it on allied CS within a certain range (like spoils of war in reverse) rather than personal cs. Neither of those should cause much issue to other laners since they're solo. (aside from maybe a small buff to ganking junglers)
