My Rank Should Match My Enemies

Lets get this out of the way: I'm Silver. Call me a scrub all you want, but I'm pretty sure this question applies to a lot of people.

Why am I getting paired against Platinum players?

I don't see how it's fair to Rank me as Silver if I'm playing against people well above this level. I'm not saying I don't deserve this Rank, I'm saying that it doesn't seem very practical to determine where I'm placed by having me try to beat people 2 divisions above my own.

In other words, if I can beat most other Silver players, and a good portion of Gold players, shouldn't that mean I deserve to be in a higher division than Silver? Why do I have to prove I can beat Platinum players to determine that I'm good enough to be in Gold?

Again, I don't think I'm as skilled as a Platinum player, I just want my Rank to actually represent the skill level of the players I'm matched against.

This system is broken. Badly.

I believe it gets better when you get to Diamond, since there seem to be a lot fewer issues like these.

Another thing to add: Why is it fair that these Platinum players get to play against people 2 divisions below them, gaining LP and further climbing the ladders, while those Silver players get punished for being unfairly matched against them? The Plat players are taking a step backwards in terms of improving themselves, yet they get rewarded for it.
