Noob Questions: Bard's E And How To Use It

So i played Bard for the first time yesterday and i gotta say i love him but his E is confusing to me. If the enemy can go through it just like you then doesn't that limit how useful it is? Sure you could put your whole team on baron but i can't think of any uses for it in lane. If only your allies could use it then you could use it to gank but making both teams able to use it kind of renders any uses i thought of irrelevant. So how DO you use it?
