Iron Ideas: Attack Speed on Mages

Why don't more mages (excluding Azir) consider taking something like Nashor's? item 3115 Not as part of their core build or anything, but mages with high AP can actually shred towers pretty hard with autos. In the example, Nashor's Tooth gives them the AS to do it better while also having stats that they care about anyway (decent chunk of AP, CDR). Additionally, mages should be weaving in autos between spells anyway in fights, so it's not like the on-hit damage is wasted.

In short, obviously it's not amazing in all situations, but why don't mages looking to take towers faster build attack speed?

Because in higher elos very few mages can get in range to auto attack turrets, as the enemy team will properly zone them. Additionally, the gold put into buying a nashors is better spent working towards the sorcerers boots oblivion orb rab cap rough build.

Higher elo builds towards champions’ strengths— in this case for mages, teamfighting and bursting— as opposed to their weaknesses— objective control, for mages.

It’s worth noting that nashors doesn’t increase your tower taking power by anywhere near as much as lich bane. As lich bane procs on turrets, it will actually increase your turret taking speed significantly. Lich bane scales with 0.75% base ad+0.5 AP last I checked, which will increase your single auto damage to turrets from 1.0 base + 0.4 AP to 1.75 base + 0.9 AP. Not too shabby. Many mages still don’t get it because it doesn’t factor well into their burst+teamfighting.

If you really wanted to take turrets faster as a Mage, you would be better off just getting item 3100 as that'll give you more damage on the turrets while also not really harming your overall dps on the mage. With that said, Nashor's is a good AP item and can be strong on a lot of mages, generally ones that have a use for auto attacking a lot to proc stuff.

These are the mages that either do Build it or can build it in one of their builds: Azir Diana Lulu Neeko Teemo and then there is a sort of mage like Kayle.

I mean there are some champions where it is viable like Orianna and now even Shyvana is starting to go AP a lot and building it (tho I know shes not a mage lol). You might be able to build it on Kennen Bard though personally I don't rem seeing anyone building it on them but I can see it doing decent.

But yea, as some of the other posts have mentioned, its generally because of the difference in range that's why a lot of the mages don't build it. Also if they're kit isn't really revolving around auto attacks much, then they don't want to waste gold building items that relies on you doing that. While it is true that mages auto attack during their spell's rotation, but going for Nashor's will cut away gold from either getting more Magic Pen like item 3165 item 3135 or away from safety like item 3157 item 3102.

You have skills. Skills have range. Auto attacks are low range and you're putting yourself in danger & in range of other people with skills or more powerful auto attacks.

Champs that love Nashor's also love auto attacking. Diana wants to proc her passive for more burst & has to auto a lot for that. Orianna has a passive that is entirely tied to auto attacking etc. Azir scales very heavily with attack speed, but he has attack range that is normal for a SKILL range, meaning he avoids the downsides of auto attacking normally.

If there weren't 4 necessary mage items t hat they absolutely have to build unless they want to fall off 30 minutes into the game.. there would still not be many mage builds with it for the mentioned reasons.
