Barrier vs Heal for Long Range Mid-Laners

I've been playing heroes like Vel'Koz and Lux, long range heroes that don't really need ignite.

I can't choose between Barrier and Heal though, which one is better?

I think barrier is counter to ignite & grievous wounds with damage

So it depends, heal gives you health, barrier disappears. But barrier may save you from ignite (how long does barrier last?)

I prefer heal

Heal is usually better as it can affect you and an ally, plus a movement speed boost.

Barrier is better for 1v1. It doesn't get countered by ignite (which is run quite often on champions that have kill pressure on you) or by grievous wounds (which is also run quite often by ap mages mid).

The real question is why do people grab barrier then? =P

They should buff its duration, to counter ignite. Because ignite counters heal... soo ye
