Season 6 / Season 7
So I started league this year and what happens during the transition of seasons.. LoL is closed until new season comes out or what?

Preseason. Ranked ladder closes (you can still play it I believe, but you don't really do much), and Riot uses that time to make pretty large scale changes to the game. Expect things to be relatively unbalanced at first, as some things are kind of going to be "throw it at the wall and see if it sticks" type stuff. But besides that the game continues as normal, and the ranked season restarts around mid January
