If you are trying to counter-pick a tank, don't choose a burst damage mage (Veigar Annie Lux , etc.). Burst Mages are similar to assassins: vulnerable to tanks because tanks can eat the explosion of burst damage fairly safely, then pounce the mage while they are waiting on cooldowns.

If you need a mage and need to work around enemy tanks, choose a sustained damage mage. They deal high damage over a prolonged period of time and can chip down tanks reliably by peeling off their health and kiting or CCing when the tank tries to retaliate.

Cassiopeia can keep poison damage DoTing away tank health and hitting them with small spikes of E damage while using slowing effects to keep a safe distance.

Swain has strong self-healing and can DoT tanks health down in good sized chunks while using his root and his slow to remain safe from retaliation.

Karthus can kite around tanks while dropping bombs to chip down their health, and even shred their MR to increase the damage they take.

Malzahar has his %HP W, but he can also keep dropping E DoTs voidlings and Qs to work down tank health, and Q's silence will make it difficult for tanks to use their skills to dive or engage Malz.

In all cases, you will need to keep moving and kite. Move, cast, move, cast. If you allow the enemy tanks to get close to you you may not survive the fight. Play the long game and chip down their defenses until they are vulnerable to finishing blows.

These are all great picks against tanks. Other choices are high poke mages like KogMaw Ziggs and Xerath who can whittle down backlines and the tanks before a teamfight. They rely heavily on positioning and will be best if you have a good frontline as well to peel for you so the enemy frontline will have a lot of trouble getting to you.

The mages mentioned are high DPS/DOT mages. A few others to mention: Azir Ryze. Basically any champion whose offense is always on; Azir's sandsoldiers attacks and Ryze's rwqeqwqeqrwqeqw..... are examples of this. Bonus points for Ryze as he has MR shred in his E. Azir is really hard to play, so I would use him with caution, he is very position reliant and his micro is very intense. Ryze is position reliant as well, but he is less mechanically difficult and is more forgiving due to his tankiness and self peel with his W.

You might find other champions that fit in one of these categories but they do fairly well against tanks.

Zyra is also a nice pick if you know how to position yourself to make up for her squishiness. Getting Liandry's skyrockets her damage against tanks.

Yeah, Zyra's right up there with Azir and Cass imo. Not THE best but she is much better against tanks than the majority of mages, particularly as she has excellent ways to peel tanks off her.
