Honestly? The state of some champions in this game right now is disgusting

THE RlVER KlNG··142 votes·8,642 views

Fair warning, this is a rant.

You have Fiddlesticks, a ridiculously niche pick who has steadily lost both his itemization and his usefulness in the jungle for the past 2 seasons, sitting at a less than 44% winrate and a less than 1% pickrate, and has been like this for multiple patches with no word from Riot.

On the other side of the spectrum you have Jhin still boasting a 50% pickrate and winrate as an ADC. This is in a meta where full lethality assassins and divers, his supposed counter, are running rampant. Statistically he has been the #1 ADC in all respects practically since release, even in metas where crit ADCs are strong (although he somehow is allowed to be both a pen AND a crit ADC). Jhin literally wins 25% of all League games. But that's right, Jhin is fun to play and fair to play against.

We've got my main man Dr. Mundo sitting at a 45% winrate and less than 1% pickrate, Shen at 46% with barely a 5% pickrate, and a plethora of D-tier top laners all bunched together, but Darius with his 54% winrate, 10% pickrate ass is balanced because he can be kited. People seem to forget you can apply that same logic to literally every melee character without a dash, coincidentally the champions struggling the most right now.

You've got Cho still being complete garbage in pretty much all his roles, and since Riot just dumped their miracle plan on him, don't expect any more meaningful work until 2022 when they finally get around to his VGU, after Ryze's 8th rework. Meanwhile, Lee, Vi, Ivern, Graves etc. all continue to be jungle gods that Riot seems to have no plans to touch them. Certain champions can languish in the gutter for years but as soon as stuff starts to get picked in the LCS not named Lee fucking Sin he gets some arbitray buff to his shield strength or his E slow or his Q range that puts him on top again.

We have the mid lane where LeBlanc still has a massive ban, win, and pick rate.....Ahri can sit on a 54% winrate and 13% pickrate for years and never get touched, same goes for Annie but with less pick rate, or Fizz who for some reason was buffed despite having a great winrate and pickrate for an AP assassin not named LeBlanc or Katarina, both of whom disallow anyone ~~melee ~~to play the game or win a lane.

You've got champions like Camille and Graves and Rengar and Kha'Zix (hey, notice any similarities? Melee AD casters with obnoxious mobility) with >50% banrates (almost forgot LB with her 60%), Talon, Jhin, Quinn, Jayce, Varus, Zed all abusing the fuck out of lethality and determing the meta of their respective lanes. Lethality is so OP it dragged Zed out of the grave, I am NOT going to do another year of Zed every other game. I don't care how much skill people like to pretend he takes to play (hint, he's not even that difficult thanks to his free out), I simply don't like being gapclosed on from 1400 range by a guy with a spellshield, Lifeline, GA, 160 mr and 500 AD. I'm sorry if I offended some edgelord who likes to remove agency from their opponents.

But yes, continue to release more problem champions like Camille instead of fixing Azir, Kalista, Kindred, etc. that you deem too problematic to exist in a viable form but throw away in the dumpster because you don't have any way of fixing them. But yes, by all means, ignore the monstrosities named Graves and Kha'Zix and Rengar that tear everyone that gets too close a new one, or Fiora or Yasuo or Riven who cannot lose top lane if they are skilled enough. Fuck skill creep and fuck mastery entitlement. The goal of a champion is not to see how much you can break them past a certain skill curve, it's to fill a niche and tell a story. Generalists are and have always been a bad idea - every champion should be a niche champion that fulfills a certain goal, not - 'I'm just good at everything and am fun to play".

Melee supports not named Blitzcrank and maybe Braum are still garbage, yet Janna with her 53% winrate 20% pickrate isn't the problem - oh no, that's Tahm Kench, the melee immobile fuck who needs three autos to be useful. It certainly isn't Thresh, with a 50% winrate 24% pickrate and who has determined the support meta for years and who takes all of TK's utility as well as Nautilus's engage and peel in one kit, or Zyra, who outdamages everyone else on her team put together - oh, no, it's probably Malzahar, who can't even mid now. Thank you Riot!

We've got Nunu who is so fucking useless you have to break the meta to play him and then get banned, or other junglers like Udyr and Gragas who have dropped off the face of the earth. We've got Heimerdinger who has been nerfed indirectly by basically every change in the game since the ADC rework. We have all the roles Riot has taken away over the years, like Tahm Kench and Trundle jungle and Malzahar support and Aurelion Sol or Fiddlesticks anywhere and Shyvana / Volibear top and Kog'maw mid, but they will arbitrarily decide Zyra/Brand/MISS FORTUNE support and Ziggs ADC and Quinn top and GRAVES FUCKING JUNGLE is fine and dandy.

Honestly I'm not. Newer champions are showcasing the better technology and abilities Riot has now to make interesting characters compared to what they had to work with back then (Fiddles has no skill shots and Mundo is a walking stat stick. Hell, their first new champion, Pantheon, is a ball of stats).

Now granted sometimes they go too far (SHURIMA!) and sometimes I question what they were thinking (The only new mechanic with Camille is her hookshot imo) but I'm glad for these new designs.

THE RlVER KlNG22 votes

Fiddlesticks is also one of the squishiest champions in the game with some of the worst ranges on his spells for a mage character - like, less than some ADC auto ranges. He's an immobile and squishy mage who is encouraged to be in the middle of a team, and Zhonyas has slowly gotten worse and worse for him. Pantheon and Mundo are flawed, but that is because Riot doesn't seem to care enough to fix them. Riot has had years to do so.

EDIT: when exactly was it that you got downvoted for saying something that is objectively true

Ralanr25 votes

Riot had Years to work on Yorick, which they did but had to icebox him because it didn't work.

Riot also hasn't exactly been twiddling their thumbs all these years either. They didn't even have a rework team a few years ago. Now they actually have a better organization in this crap.

THE RlVER KlNG14 votes

'Twiddling their thumbs' that's exactly what they seem to be doing. They crack down on niche champions the moment they are too strong but let a baker's dozen of generalists determine what is meta and what isn't for them without bothering to nerf them.

And just because a champion is overloaded and needlessly complex does not mean they are more balanced. In fact, the opposite is always true.

Ralanr23 votes

Did I ever fucking talk about balance?

No.

But yeah, because Riot hasn't touched Mundo and Fiddles or a bunch of older champions it means they've been twiddling their thumbs. Let's just ignore every new champion or how Riots history with reworks has been basically crap before Sion.

They've definitely been "twiddling their thumbs"

Do you know how fucking entitled you sound?

THE RlVER KlNG10 votes

I don't think you have the right to call me entitled when you basically just said 'fuck older champions they are bad all good champions are new because they are complicated"

They have been twiddling their thumbs and refusing to properly balance their game for the sake of the LCS and damage/skill creep.

Ralanr23 votes

I was alluding to how Riot has had a bad track record with reworks until Sion and even then it's been tricky to rework a champion and get a satisfying result out of it. But no, you seem to ignore that and consider all the new champions that Riot makes as them ignoring your champions who need the attention.

Riot knows they need the attention eventually, they just do not feel confident enough to do it yet (or haven't been confident to do it in the past).

To give an example of how doing reworks on such champions can go hilariously wrong, Mordekaiser Mordekaiser Mordekaiser Mordekaiser and Mordekaiser! Is that what you want? A fucking mess of a champion who lose what he was for some trashy gimmick? Cause I know I wouldn't want that for Pantheon, a champion I like but is in DESPERATE need for a full VGU.

So yes, I am calling you entitled. I'd rather have Riot actually get a good track record of Reworks (which by the way, they fucking have now) before they rework champions I like that need it. And since Riot is doing less new champions this year, we might get more reworks.

You miss the point.

An immobile squishy mage who wants to be in the middle of the enemy team is nearly impossible to balance. He's squishy, right? Yep, but he's supposed to be in your entire team, so either he's tanky enough to do that and get out alive/get a few kills, or he's squishy so he'll die instantly, since he can't dodge a single skillshot due to W making him stand still. Swain is similar, but he can keep moving so he's not as tanky as a result.

THE RlVER KlNG5 votes

If Fiddles got a little bit of damage reduction (nothing big, maybe like 15 / 20 / 25%) while Crowstorm rages, the base damage is lowered but the scaling goes up, and he gets his old Q range back I think he would be better. His W should switch targets upon death like Lucian and Yi, as well.

Pommel Knight8 votes

So you want an unkillable high dmg point and click champion with hard and soft cc that has sustain?

How about no. Fiddle is an old champion and needs a rework desperately to have his point and click cc abilities changed or turned into skillhots.

Adding the dmg reduction on his ult would drain so much of his power budget that it would leave him with no dmg on ult at least and in a worst state than before. The reason Riot isn't buffing old champions is because they have toxic kits and need to be reworked, because if they're not then they are oppressive.

Supreme Senpai694 votes

Yeah I gotta stay damage reduction during the ult is a horrid idea. It'd needlessly drain his power budget too because most fiddles use Zhonya's for the duration of the ult, or they're chasing people down with it-- those people aren't attacking him. He doesn't need the damage reduction at all.

I would love for his W to swap targets if one dies though. That'd be a very nice QOL change, especially for clearing the raptors which is something he really struggles with

Don't forget that her hardest counter is and always has been sitting at less than 1% pick rate. If she is such a problem then why is no one picking her counter? 0.4% pick rate for a champion who provides his team with cc, tank, damage, defensive buff, and a movement speed buff seems kind of stupid when the only reason they don't pick him is because he is classified as a tank in middle lane.

As a side note, I'm kind of worried about Galio's rework after they have reworked all of my past mains and I have only liked one of them.

Lethality is so OP it dragged Zed out of the grave, I am NOT going to do another year of Zed every other game. I'm sorry if I offended some edgelord who likes to remove agency from their opponents.

https://na.op.gg/champion/zed/statistics/mid

He's not actually doing particularly well.

Also, he's much harder to play than the champion you play at least, and it's pretty hilarious for a Tahm Kench main to complain about Zed removing agency from his opponents. You literally have a point and click "Can't do shit to my little buddy" button that has very minimal to nonexistent counterplay. False counterplay at best. What are you supposed to do? CC Tahm Kench, who builds full tank, instead of the squishy damage dealers he is protecting that can actually kill you? Lol.

But yes, continue to release more problem champions like Camille

She appears to be fine as of right now actually. A champion having a bunch of levers to balance around doesn't make them problematic.

instead of fixing Azir, Kalista, Kindred, etc. that you deem too problematic to exist in a viable form but throw away in the dumpster because you don't have any way of fixing them.

Kindred is getting small changes, and Azir and Kalista need a full rework. Kalista in particular is an abominable piece of shit who should have never been released in that state. Should those reworks take precedence over reworks to older champions with fundamentally weak kits like Galio though? I don't think so.

But yes, by all means, ignore the monstrosities named Graves and Kha'Zix and Rengar that tear everyone that gets too close a new one,

So once again, two of those champions have been nerfed multiple times and one is only recently OP. Stop bitching.

or Fiora or Yasuo or Riven who cannot lose top lane if they are skilled enough.

Whew lad, now you're complaining about two champions who haven't been problems in a while? Yasuo and Riven aren't over-performing at all in any level of play.

Fiora randomly is, not sure what's up with that.

No, there will always be generalists, both for champion classes and roles. Generalists are only a problem when they also have very specific strengths that they out-perform other similar champions in, like how Kalista has a lot of generalist power AS WELL as the best kiting in the game that lets her hard counter a wide swathe of the champion roster.

Melee supports not named Blitzcrank and maybe Braum are still garbage, yet Janna with her 53% winrate 20% pickrate isn't the problem - oh no,

Yes melee supports need more help in general, and yes Janna is a problem, but she is literally the most nerfed champion in the game. Her kit is so fundamentally powerful as a support that number changes won't fix her unless she is gutted. Which, tbh, I'm fine with. I think the only reason it hasn't happened is because people don't really complain about Janna, because she deals no damage.

that's Tahm Kench, the melee immobile fuck who needs three autos to be useful.

Ah here we go, the part where you pretend your favorite champion isn't kept deliberately undertuned for a reason.

I remember when balanced fatass getaway driver catfish was good. He dominated the meta because the ability to unconditionally save your ADC's worthless life from just about anything with the press of a button and then reposition them is incredibly powerful. I recall Dyrus in a VOD repeatedly emphasizing how broken Tahm Kench is as a champion. Why do you think this is?

Believe me, I wish Tahm Kench wasn't broken as a support. Because I quite enjoy him top, but nerfs to support Kench benched top lane TK.

It certainly isn't Thresh, with a 50% winrate 24% pickrate and who has determined the support meta for years and who takes all of TK's utility as well as Nautilus's engage and peel in one kit,

Thresh doesn't have near the tankiness and CC of Nautilus, nor does he have the damage, tankiness, and lifesaving ability of Tahm Kench when Kench is good.

or Zyra, who outdamages everyone else on her team put together

Yeah she could use more nerfs.

  • oh, no, it's probably Malzahar, who can't even mid now. Thank you Riot!

First of all, Malz is doing fine mid, second of all, support Malzahar was busted and got what he deserved.

We've got Nunu who is so fucking useless you have to break the meta to play him and then get banned,

Nunu does need a rework but I will acknowledge I don't agree with how that Nunu main was treated.

or other junglers like Udyr and Gragas who have dropped off the face of the earth.

There's some pretty compelling reasons for Udyr not being allowed to be in the meta, lol.

Gragas has also typically been problematic when strong.

We've got Heimerdinger who has been nerfed indirectly by basically every change in the game since the ADC rework.

I wouldn't mind Heimer buffs.

We have all the roles Riot has taken away over the years, like Tahm Kench and Trundle jungle

Nerfed because of their strength in their main role being too strong.

and Malzahar support

Good.

and Aurelion Sol or Fiddlesticks anywhere

Whoa now, are we pretending that Aurelion Sol is bad now?

https://na.op.gg/champion/aurelionsol/statistics/mid

Sol is incredibly strong once you get past his steep learning curve.

and Shyvana / Volibear top

Same as Trundle and Tahm.

and Kog'maw mid

Eh.

but they will arbitrarily decide Zyra/Brand support

Why do people pretend that Brand support is nearly as problematic as Zyra? He's not. He's not even overperforming.

and Ziggs ADC

Ziggs ADC was being looked at by Rito carefully to see if it needed nerfs, otherwise they were fine with it. And uh... why is that a problem? I thought you were hating on them for enforcing a rigid meta. Ziggs ADC came out of nowhere and wasn't intended by Riot at all. It's also fallen a bit out of favor with the rise of lethality ADCs.

and Quinn top

Where else would she go?

and GRAVES FUCKING JUNGLE is fine and dandy.

I am indifferent to Graves jungle. I'd just like to be able to play him top lane.

five oh tree 6 votes

Definitely worth the read. I'd like to point out that when tahm was overtuned, it showed in the jungle, where he was an unkillable monster that would kill literally anyone and everyone who got within autorange of him.

Baron Perenolde8 votes

My only complaint with your rant is that you didn't mention Orianna at all. For a 'control mage', she still chunks members of your entire team with two spells while having decent safety. The Lee Sin of mid lane needs nerfs to put her back in line... I thought Orianna was picked for her combo potential and safety, not those two plus insane burst and dps through her passive.

Simply put, youve been lied to. Riot has always gone with the narrative about counter play and fairness and windows and all that nonsense. But its just that; a narrative. They want a game that sustainable so they can make money.

And thus you get what you describe. For the sake of 'fun' they make busted things and reinforce it.

THE RlVER KlNG5 votes

I want a game where I can enjoy champions that have unique thematics and clear niches, that don't remove agency from their opponent or have unneccessary skill curves - skill is important but skill creep in this game has been one of Riot's biggest mistakes

but generalists, and Riot's favoritism, arrogance, and refusal to admit mistakes, relent or back down denies me that opportunity - or the concept that 'some things on a kit (eg hextech ultimatum) have to be broken to make it fun'

That´s not a problem. The problem isn´t that perfectly balancing 130+ champions would make the game stagnant.

The problem is that the game IS stagnant. The meta hasn´t really been flipped on its head.

Sivir isn´t seeing play, Lucian is still garbage, Kalista's buff meant nothing.

Diana, Lissandra and Kayle, known assassin counters aren´t seeing play.

Divers, Bruisers, Juggernauts are seeing little to no play either, safe for the more obnoxious examples.

The meta has been the same since Jhin's release, really.

Instead of riding the meta or being a special snowflake, why not ask of Riot to flip the meta upside down and she how things go? The game would be considerably more interesting that way.

so much wrong in this coment it is perfectly possible to at least balance 100 champs over 130

and it isn't stagnant, do you have any idea of the amount of combination you can do with 130 champs and 5 players? hell fucking yeah if only the 130 champs were worth picking

PB4UAME5 votes

Just to put some numbers behind this so you can truly get a grasp. With 5 characters per team and 130 characters to choose from, there are 34,349,253,120, yes, that's over thirty-four mother-fucking-BILLION possible team compositions.

That's a number so fucking mindblowingly, astronomically large if you started counting to it as an infant, and your family carried on after you, your great great great great great great great great great grand child would still be counting. (it would take WELL OVER 1,054 YEARS* , or over a goddamn millennium. http://www.infoplease.com/askeds/counting-billion.html)

How in the hell could that grow stagnant? That estimate is assuming 1 number counted per second (which isn't even possible for the vast majority of numbers you'd be counting already) but League games all take at least twenty minutes.

Just to play 1 game of every combination would take 1,200 times as long as that estimate if we say each LoL game is 20 minutes. That's well over 1,264,800 years worth of League playing, just to experience it all once. How the unholy fuck could anyone call that stagnant if no one could ever even experience one ten-thousandth of that if they dedicated their whole life to LoL?

WoonStruck3 votes

Exactly.

The only people that say Riot's in the right constantly fucking their game up 'to keep it exciting' are just Riot white-knights.

A decently balanced game doesn't get stagnant. Please see Dota 2 if you want examples. Even if meta picks are generally the same during some periods, the game has NEVER felt as stagnant as LoL, and they make MUCH fewer tweaks to their game.

######Its because they aren't shit at balancing their game.
