Why are promo series even at all tied to MMR

Just an aside from that other thread about the LP system/

Entire reason I stopped giving a crap about ranking up and just rushed gold 5 this season, because last season (or maybe it was season before last, I forget long time ago with little fucks given) I was put against diamond players just trying to promote between divisions in plat.

To advance to a rank you should be against players at or slightly above that rank, not whatever the hell your MMR is at the time.

Eh, the MMR is to try to make you with similar skilled players, but it can make it a bit difficult to win games at times. It really shouldn't be much of an issue though, since you should be around a similar skill level if you are getting matched together.

However, it can work out well for the player. If your MMR is higher than that of your tier (or some other mechanic, close enough) you will get more LP for victories than you lose for defeats. I'm currently Silver 1 and I'm getting matched primarily with Gold 3 -> Plat 5 players in game, so I get ~25 LP per victory and lose ~12 LP per defeats. Basically, 1W = 2L as far as my LP is concerned, which makes climbing fairly easy.
