and instead we get a trans-dimensional guardian fulfilling the exact same role only without the fallibility or interesting political aspects

Not that any of the lore we've gotten since The Great Retcon couldn't have fit in under the IoW anyway with care...

Getting closer and closer every day to just leaving League despite the amount of money I've spent here, very seriously considering just moving to Heroes of the Storm right now though if I do switch I will probably still play League every now and then unless they managed to finally effectively delete immobile mages from the game and/or delete/gut AP Ezreal.
