When do you think is the right time to try ranked? Should I even do it?

I've been thinking about going into ranked, but I don't think i'm that good. I asked my friend about it, to which she replied "Oh stop bein' such a pussy! You've been playin long enough, and you know your main pretty well by now. SO JUST DO IT!" (no exaggeration by the way. she actually said that.) So how long should you wait before trying it, if even trying it at all? I've been told most ranked players are elite smurfs who have been playin forever, and I really don't want to put up with that (; -_-)

Update: Fuck ranked. I played a bunch of matches and they all went exactly the same. all people do is steal cs and insult eachother. Nobody commits to the lanes they got. People refuse to communicate important stuff. and apparently adc is not a thing that exists. Everything went to shit in the 10 minutes. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.

well u will likely play a couple promo games go 3-7 2-8 1-9 or something... everyone will flame and complain and then you'll start in bronze and learn how to play the game or stay there basically

try the promos and if you go 0-10 in every one, keep playing normal for a while. When I first did ranked I sucked dick so bad I gave up and played normal for like a year then came back.

Play once you feel ready. A lot of people jump into Ranked the second they hit lvl30 only to crash and burn straight down to bronze 5 where they stay for the rest of the season. My advice:

  1. Get some basic experience in normals.
  2. Make sure you have a stabile internet connection.
  3. Have at least 3 champions in your main role that you are comfortable with (e.g. if top, then 1 AD, 1 AP, 1 Tank), two in your secondary, and at least one in every other (just in case you get autofilled into roles you didn't want). Don't be scared to remove or add different champions to the list as season goes on (always read the patch notes!)
  4. Learn your champions' builds, runes and masteries.
  5. Don't be toxic. There's enough of those in our games already.

And yeah, that's about it.

Whenever you feel like it. Ranked isn't some super competitive mode if thats what you were thinking. There are tons of players in ranked who don't take it seriously and you don't have to worry about not being good because the majority of players you play with will also not be very good.

Have a good internet connection (make sure you wont dc) and i would say to pay at least 600-750 games total before trying because you'll get nowhere.

Try a game. See what happens. You won't fight "elite smurfs" unless you have a high MMR vs your reflective rank. First-time-Unranked starts at Silver 5 MMR, so that's who you should expect to be placed against. You will also be against Gold 5's/Silver 1's last season who were placed in Silver 5 this season. If you have Bronze/Silver friends, queue WITH them, as for some reason it reduces your MMR and places you against Bronzes/Silvers.

Ranked is the best place to learn, so while your early experiences might be pretty rough and it might be demoralising to discover that you are in fact bronze at first, once you get to your proper place you can start really learning. Everyone will be roughly your skill level and usually trying their best, so you can start learning how to play around that and improving until you can beat that level. If you keep on look at your own play and places you could improve, you'll get better and better, and slowly climb through the ranks.

No one actually cares what your rank is, so try to avoid ladder anxiety. So you might end up bronze, so what? Just do it, and then improve yourself out of bronze. Or maybe you'll start silver. Maybe you're a prodigy and you 10-0 placements and place gold (or even plat 5 if the matchmaking gods happened to match you with relatively high mmr people for the majority of your matches). People still won't actually care. You'll get the occasional degrading remark about your rank, but you'll get those for being unranked too, but unless you're a top tier challenger, people really aren't going to pay attention (and even then), so don't worry about it, and just do it.

Theres nothing to lose, and nifty borders/icons/skin to be gained, so do it.

Want an honest answer? If this is your first time, don't try it, you will at best reach silver/gold, and playing at this level isn't that much different from normals, i mean, you can try, but don't be surprised if you'll rank yourself low.

Before starting ranked go to op.gg, and see your CS score, if your cs score is at least 6,5 (speaking of lanes), then you can start rankeds, because if you don't gather gold in your hands correcty you will just be a burden and every win will be either you got carried/the enemy team was REAAALLLY bad/you got lucky, and those are not good ways to win, because you won't improve at all and you'll just bounce up and down a couple of divisions without EVER moving forward.

What you need to do now is to learn the game, watch some streams, watch LCS, watch the videos riot published where they comment teamfights during important tournaments, try to reverse engineer that and learn why, how and when they did that.

Learn wave management, learn the mechanics and practice them, your role thoroughly, rotations (and this includes map pressure as well), learn how to not waste time and get the maximum advantage possible out every action and every second, learn how to trade, learn how to win your lane, learn how to bring your advantage in the right parts of the map, and even play when you're behind.

If you jump into rankeds without a proper preparation you'll simply ruin yourself because this game punishes more your own errors than enemy misplay. (just a small example: wrong wave management can make the difference between losing or gaining 12 minions, and in the long run it will make you lose at least half of your supposed farm, now imagine you could magically double your gold once you are mid game, this is how much you missed. And i bet you, right now, don't even notice that.)

There are also plenty of youtube channels that specialize in high level replays, just search "lol replays" on yt.
