Cassiopeia the Poison Mage is POWERING UP from POISONING her opponent. Not DEBILITATING them instead

5G8Nri0B54··45 votes·3,036 views

Here's my daily topic on all the many many MANY things wrong with Cassiopeia's rework. The list goes on, but the main points have been...

-the fundamental problems of turning her into "AP Rambo" with her E-focused kit

-how your rework exclusively caters to only on side of a fanbase while shredding evidence that the other side ever existing

-the inherent fallacy in reworking her for being an "oppressive lane-bully"

-forcing the hyper-carry role down her tiny throat (repeatedly touched upon in all the points above)

-the single-target direct damage focus at the expense of her AoE DoT identity she had before (touched upon above)

-the Passive and how it runs contrary to what she should be

As you can probably guess from the title and the bolded part, I'm here to talk to you about her Passive.

Aspect of the Serpent is wrong in so many ways I can literally separate them into layers!

Let's start at the top layer, the fundamental problem with this Passive on her kit.

** ---1) Cassiopeia is growing in power by POISONING her opponent. Or to put it another way, she is spending more time STRENGTHENING HERSELF rather than WEAKENING HER OPPONENT--- **

Cassiopeia is not Syndra. She is not Xerath or even Khazix. She is not an upgrading cyborg like Viktor. So with ALL those champions you decided to give this evolving Passive to, why do you give it to the SOLE champion in the game where such a power literally works against the champion's theme?

**There is an inherent disconnect when you have a POISON MAGE channel poison onto her opponent...so that she can make her biceps grow bigger. **Common sense itself should have told you that the act of introducing a harmful agent into your opponent should work to weaken them over a period of time. Instead of permanently granting her strength, her poison should do the opposite of that, but to her opponents instead. THAT is the poison fantasy you claim to understand.

For reference, go watch the final episode of Season 3 of Legend of Korra. Look at how that mercury poisoning ****ed her up real good. Zaheer didn't grow a bulge just because he watched Korra get injected by poison. Korra herself got visibly weakened and ****ed up even after the fight is over. THAT is POISON.

** --- 2) It supports your plan to make her into a Hyper-Carry, which is NOT the direction she should be going in the first place! ---** This is just logic. When you have something that is bad...the last thing you need to do is to make something else that supports that which is bad.

Your problem is that you made her a hyper-carry --> making her Passive support such a direction makes your problem worse.

** ---3) Your claim that her Passive is supposed to reflect her CURSE comes off as flimsy after you look at her as a champion.--- **

First, you only gave this explanation out several weeks after the rework came out and you received more and more criticisms over the rework. Secondly, you keep calling it "Cassiopeia embracing the curse". So...what is there to embrace? Cassiopeia isn't a champion slowly being cursed into what she is, she IS the cursed being already. Your argument that she is letting the curse slowly consume her, yet in return she grows stronger doesn't hold any grounds at all because she already let it happen.

If this is a curse, WHAT is the harm in the curse that makes embracing it so difficult? All I can see is that she gets her badass snake-tail, and if that really was the punishment of the curse, guess what, that speaks against your idea to make her Passive a "embracing the curse" because she begins the game as she is. She doesn't start off as a human with human abilities, she starts off as a lamia with all her poison-y torso-sized fang-throw-y powers.

4) The very fact that it's based off milestones is painfully unsatisfying, period.

She has 500 stacks, and among those 500 stacks,** 497 of those stacks do not do jack!** Unlike Thresh, Sion, etc. where each stack brings something to the table, it is VERY unsatisfying to build those stacks when they don't do a thing for her. When confronted with the possibility of making each stack give her something,

you said this:

When the rewards are unnoticeably small, do they still feel rewarding?

and I said this:

You bring the point where if unnoticeably small rewards will do anything for her at all, but let me counter with this.

What is more unnoticeably small? A very miniscule bonus...or no bonus at all?

Because this is what really stinks about stacking her Passive. She has 500 stacks. 497 of those stacks are unrewarding and disappointing.

and this:

But if you're still so crazy about making her an unfun hyper-carry, atleast make her Passive less unsatisfying by giving it TWO separate aspects.

**The first aspect are your milestone rewards that comes far and few inbetween.**

**The second aspect is a per-stack aspect where each and every single one of her stack will do something like make her poisons stronger or something.**

I should add that I am against the idea of her having a stacking Passive because it enforces her hyper-carry identity that you are forcing onto her. No matter how you look at it, items aside, a full stack Cassiopeia will always be stronger than a no-stack Cassiopeia. But this is one direction you could have brought to make a poor direction less rocky at the very least.

** ---5) This Final point is something you actually acknowledged. It feels like a shackle while other champions with stacking or evolving Passives do not feel shackled.--- **

There is two aspects to this point here.

i) NOTICE, how many of those stacking Passives HAVE NO LIMIT to their growing power! Sion, Thresh, Veigar, Nasus. Their power is limitless! When you cap a champion's stack at a fixed amount, that makes it feel like a shackle! It makes it feel like their ceiling is what they SHOULD have been from the start and any point below their max stacks is just you artificially gating their laning phase (refer to: -the inherent fallacy in reworking her for being an "oppressive lane-bully"...)

ii) Kha'zix, Syndra, and Viktor have a feeling of being shackled too, trust me, I play those champions, I know them, I MAINED pre-rework Viktor. Shackling is ESPECIALLY relevant to Kha'zix whose abilities are genuinely crap without their evolutions. But do you know why those Passives work for those champions and not for Cassiopeia?

!!! Because unlike Cassiopeia, shackling powers make perfect sense for those champions !!!

Viktor and Khazix are starting off "infantile" and weak, they are growing in power through their own unique means. Syndra is literally shackled by her douche of a master. And guess what? Even WHEN such a Passive fits them, they can still fail in gameplay. Look at Syndra's Passive, it's boring, not a lot of people like them, there is little in terms of decision making. It FITS her perfectly unlike Cassiopeia, but it's not a FUN Passive that really adds anything substantial to her kit at all. I'd argue Viktor is edging towards that too because all Viktor's are the same in the end just like how all Syndra's are the same. The ONLY successful case imo is Kha'zix.......................on a theoretical basis. Kha'zix can be quite different based on what he evolves as he has limited evolution points. I say theoretical, because who are we kidding here? Who's not going to evolve his wings?

Again just like in my previous threads. 1) is my core and more pressing issue that you seem to be ignoring. The others are certainly problems, but solve #1, and all the other issues would not be nearly as bad.

I want to add that NOBODY HATES YOU. Nobody wants you to resign or all that bs. Nobody denies that her old kit had it's problems that needed fixing. It was your job to fix those issues. What we DO hate however...is the rework.. Are we passionate? Yeah of course, just LOOK at what the rework did to her. Is still doing to her! Your rework is the One Ring. Cassiopeia is Smeagol. Except we don't have any Fellowship of the Ring.

(the fact that you never asked Cass fans what they think she was or SHOULD be prior to starting on making her rework, however, certainly didn't help)

How many Stashus does it take to change a lightbulb?

None, he just refuses to admit that it's broken.

U4fyn2vZzW1 votes

Lmao.

Thryale2 votes

That's pretty low man.

Also, personal blows like that just makes riot even less inclined to take our complaints seriously. So if you really wanted to see productive changes to cass, try to lay off the vitriol.

Saianna12 votes

You guys know what? Stashu should just bring back old Cass, cuz it's getting pointless.. No communication with playerbase Forcing reworked champion without even checking if numbers are correct There are alot of good, healthy ideas on her passive, why not use it? Do Stashu feels offended when someone has better idea?

C'mon who's supposed to play this champion if not those players you have in deep....

Btw this whole mess with Cassiopeia is exactly the same as with reworked Evelynn. "yes yes we know better, don't worry, she'll shine" and assassin changed into figher-tank in one big poof.

Foxy Brown12 votes

I don't know why there's this been this recent push in Cass threads to flatter Stashu, but I've got a hunch it's because we're hoping if we're really nice he'll start listening. Maybe he's a great guy, maybe he gives to charity, but he was given an important job to do and horribly messed up every step of it. At no point has this rework been handled properly, yet he genuinely believes he knows best. A fuck up of this proportion shouldn't be tolerated in a professional environment; where are his coworkers, his supervisors? Someone needed to stop this trainwreck a really long time ago, but instead we're left with Stashu, driving Cass into the ground and only poking his head out to insist he knows what he's doing.

We can't hate Stashu personally because we don't know him. But speaking in terms of League, he's utterly destroyed a champion, literally made up reasons for doing it (the "oppressive lane bully" argument is so bad it's downright baffling) and has yet to interact with us in a meaningful way. All of his posts are on his terms, operate within his paradigm (ie figuring out how to buff her stack milestones), and are very whiney (there's just soooo many comments and you guys are sooooooooooooo mean!). So yeah, I can't stand the guy as a designer and I would pay money to see him never touch another champion again. If he won't resign, he needs to be fired. That's not a League thing, that's a company firing incompetent employees thing.

Keep mincing words and batting your eyes if that's what you need to do to summon the great Stashu so he can tell us all about the latest features with her stacking passive, but personally I'm making it no secret that Stashu is humiliating the company he works for.

Hyrum Graff2 votes

No, the push is to stop raging at stashu until the 4.21 changes hit live. I'm sick of only seeing the same damn cass threads over and over.

Foxy Brown2 votes

The 4.21 changes are an example of him only interacting with us when it works for him. The passive is the core of the rework, and he nerfed the AP ratios on her spells to the point that she is reliant on her passive. That's why the vast majority of the criticism revolves around the passive, and why he's still not listening as long as he keeps insisting that it stays.

5G8Nri0B542 votes

Actually I try to spread around my criticism. My biggest beef is still the intense focus on her E above all else. It's just that, talk about a single problem too long and he'll think that's her ONLY problem that needs fixing.

Foxy Brown3 votes

At this point, Stashu acknowledging any problems with the ideas behind the rework would be a miracle. He seems convinced that this all comes down to numbers, and that once she deals more damage it'll all come together. There are fundamentally flawed beliefs driving this rework— such as old Cass being oppressive or gutting her AP ratios to justify silly amounts of free AP. He's just going to try to pump numbers into the kit until she's viable, because that's easier on his time and ego than addressing the problems with her kit (both old and new).

Through all this my biggest question isn't even for Stashu, it's for the people around him. Are his fellow Rioters really just watching him drown and take Cass with him? Where are the people that he answers to, and why are they tolerating failure of this degree? It's making the company, or at least his department, look very unprofessional. If he was given a job to do, shouldn't someone have checked on him at some point to make sure he wasn't, oh I don't know, messing the whole thing up and pissing the customers off? These are incredibly basic functions of any business.

The worst part is we all know this would never happen to champions like LeeSin or Lucian . Rioters actually seem to know they exist.

5G8Nri0B542 votes

I think Morello replied once in one of the Cassiopeia threads.

SmokingPuffin1 votes

Through all this my biggest question isn't even for Stashu, it's for the people around him. Are his fellow Rioters really just watching him drown and take Cass with him?

Riot is an intensely collaborative workplace. There is zero chance that Stashu is off in some corner working alone. He's probably pushing proposed changes to their internal test server on an almost-daily basis, and people are testing and giving him feedback. He's also almost certainly talking to people in champion design, champion update, and live balance teams about design direction and proposed changes.

Thryale3 votes

While I too am still feeling exasperated with this rework, at least it feels like it is starting to head in a better direction.

Riot now, my main issues are:

  • her passive forces her to have low ratios to prevent her from being bonkers late game (low ratios make building ap less rewarding)

  • her W does not suffice as a zone control tool ever since all of its dmg has been removed. (seriously, a 20% slow is nothing. grabbing an early rylais gives her a stronger slow on her E than her W provides at rank 1)

  • she still lacks a solid method of power farming like most of her competition in the mid lane

  • and finally: she has a kit that screams "I'm a lane bully" but is nerfed so that she can't be a lane bully.

I think that final point is probably one of the worst. Riot wanted to prevent her from being a lane bully, but gives her -all- the tools and the incentive to be a lane bully, but slap her on the hand with dmg penalties when she tries to do that with the excuse that she is supposed to be a hyper carry late game.

I think the main issue here is that with riot's mantra about counterplay they are overlooking some fundementals about how the game operates.

Hyper carries -don't- want to interact with their lane opponent. They are too weak to trade early game, so they just want to farm farm farm.

Lane bullies tend to fall off late game, or (at best) are just run-of-the-mill in power with better alternatives. But the main reason to pick a lane bully is because they have an extremely strong early/mid game where they attempt to shut down their lane opponent to allow their team to snowball an advantage.

But with the current cass, she scales like a hyper carry (both early game lack of dmg and late game power spike) but is compelled to play like a lane bully because she can't scale without doing so.

It's this comflicted nature that is truly hurting cass atm.

5G8Nri0B542 votes

Hyper carries -don't- want to interact with their lane opponent. They are too weak to trade early game, so they just want to farm farm farm.

Weeeelll...there's Tristana. And Ryze himself is kind of a bully up top now but that's more Riot's design problems than anything else.

But yeah, in general that's the idea behind a hyper-carry. Not the most exciting design in the world, and definitely not fitting of Cassiopeia. She really doesn't scream "I AM GOKU!"-late game as far as image goes.

Thryale1 votes

I've always seen trist as an acceptable exception due to her very weak mid game power curve compared to her peers.

ryze on the other hand, doesn't strike me as hyper carry by design. rather, it's just the nature of his mama scaling. he does look, and play, like a true lane bully. but is merely victim(or beneficiary?) of an archaic design from years ago.

5G8Nri0B541 votes

her very weak mid game power curve compared to her peers.

Yeaah I'm not entirely sure if I agree with that. Weaker than the rest of her game? Yeah. But I wouldn't say it's all that weak.

Thryale1 votes

Well, that's the intent at least. Riot has already pointed out/admitted that her weak mid game was being circumvented by fast push strats and the recent adc itemization changes that let her skip most of her weaknesses. But this isn't a problem with trist, but rather the environment she currently lives in.

yellowbricks7 votes

Yeah, I'd like to know what riot was on when they thought of ramping power from a poison mage. Absolutely ridiculous.

Orbv7 votes

Thanks for making these posts Ginga, I appreciate them. I just don't understand why they couldn't have made another champion the way they designed her. HELL, I can even see URGOT Urgot being reworked into a hyper carry spam mage with late game potential because of his disposition of a cyborg. I mean doesn't he seem like the PERFECT existing champion to have made these milestones on? He plays similar to Cass.

Why is it so difficult to see that some players want a Debilitation champion? The closest we have to one is Taric and Nasus (move speed, attack speed, armor, the person should feel like they are getting weaker as a result), and it makes far more sense for a champion with Poison to do it.

5G8Nri0B544 votes

Actually Urgot is a debilitation champ moreso than Taric and Nasus! His Passive and E makes him the AD debilitation champion.

Problem with him of course is...well...he stopped being viable a week after pros picked him in tournies and Riot reacted accordingly. Oh and, there was the feeling where if he lands E, it's over for his opponents till it wears off. If he misses his E, Urgot does nothing till it's CD is back up. There was also talk of his R completely going against the rest of his kit.

RiotRiot King Cobra3 votes

There is a debilitation champion in the game. His name is Trundle.

His Q chomp steals the enemie's attack damage from them and his ultimate drains their health (while healing his own) and steals their armor and magic resist.

He is the definition of a debilitation champion and it is the reason he had a surge of popularity in the tanky top meta because he made those Mundos and Shyvanas...debilitated and squishy. :^)

Although, I think it's hard to appreciate Trundle as such with the change of theme to ice-troll. I think he fit the bill much better as his old diseased self.

Orbv2 votes

OMG....I COMPLETELY forgot about Trundle. Not just in reference to debilitation but in the game.

The whole reason I liked him was for that reason...hm I need to play him, but I haven't touched the new jungle XP.

Basic problem for these heroes is illusion of choice. Its look as you can choice way of playstyle, but practically you need all or most of "evolutions" for every hero. It ends everytime with same resolution. This cannot be called Evolution. Because evolution means a change.

Cassi is very bad developed. Hero which needs 20% cd in passive is really terrible hero.

For this moment i see way in stacking "points of poison". Cassi can stacks points which turn to bonuses but not together with AP, MS etc.

For example: 10 points turn into +1 heal from Fang 35 points turn into 1% CD

Tiowthy3 votes

welp. thanks atleast for being the poison lady's voice for the past.... 3 months?

Starlighte2 votes

Unfortunately, prepare for another thread superbly thought-out and explained to go unnoticed or ignored by Stashu. No offense to the man, but he really doesn't get how to take feedback, and just trash the Passive already. It is 100% which Cass is currently in a state of "doesn't feel like Cass" and even if you buffed her to 90% winrate that wouldn't fix the inherent issue in her kit which is a push towards being like Ryze, and away from being the DoT mage with some potential for sustained damage.

This thread is well-done, and I truly hope that maybe it will finally reach Stashu, but don't get your hopes up. Stashu has made it evidently clear (even though he has insisted several times that if the passive isn't working, it is on the table for being slashed) that he will never rethink the passive in any meaningful way.

Noraver2 votes

This is the best description I've come across for Cass and her terrible rework. I agree with every point made.

As soon as I read she was going to be given a stacking passive, I was furious. It's terrible. It doesn't fit her character at all. Not in the slightest.

Her dots should deal damage. They're poison. She is a poison mage. Her E should refresh the poison/increase next applied duration, not 'increase damage' on it.

If Riot INSISTS on making her passive scaling, then let it scale depending on the spell. Q: Enemies hit make this spell's poison more potent over time depending on the stacks she has. W: Above E: Makes enemies weaker/increases poison duration depending on how many times you've hit them with E. (These stacks would be total, each spell has its own stacks, and be game-wide)

Canastus2 votes

Straight from the PBE:

Cassiopeia Twin Fang (E) increased poison damage buff reduced to 20% from 25%

I'm at a loss of words. They're NERFING her? Are you entirely out of your mind, Stashu?

If they wanted to adjust her power curve they should have just made her ratios Scale with rank like Eve's

Gonna bump this. Not because I am some kind of Cass expert, but because I think you might have a point.

I'm not experienced enough to talk about her, but I am of the opinion that Cass is in a TERRIBLE place.

Permit me to say that, unlike before, it is possible for unexperienced Cass players to pick her up without tearing their hair out. That is the only thing about her I do enjoy.

For years her poison actually did shit, and when it does buff her, it was always unnoticeable. Many people mostly considered that MS buff more of a brush-check tool to see if anyone's inside of it or not. Unusually handy if unintentional in design.

Now it doesn't do damage and there's a mechanic that further drives it away from feeling like poison at all.

Chromatic Eagle1 votes

I think they just wanted to make a steroid mage. Problem is that they tried to push that play style on Cass.

I like the vision and the feel. Very fluffy. I don't understand how to translate that into gameplay.

Mechanically, this feels quite likely to be a thing nobody notices, because minor debuffs aren't readable and major debuffs can't really come from a passive.

** --- 2) It supports your plan to make her into a Hyper-Carry, which is NOT the direction she should be going in the first place! ---** This is just logic. When you have something that is bad...the last thing you need to do is to make something else that supports that which is bad.

If they want to use her playstyle, they need to make a new kit for it. The current kit can't support it efficiently. Maybe this will change with upcoming PBE changes but right now, I wish they would make a new champion out of this new kit.

While I feel aweful for not having anything meaningful to contribute, I just want to say that I love your posts, Ginga. Wish I could be so well-spoken.

That being said, I agree: she is already cursed, its already happened. The getting stronger from poisoning is stupid. Sure at the cost of being chorish, it feels rewarding. But it doesnt feel right.

Poisoning and debilitating your enemy can feel rewarding too. It is this point which Riot doesn't get.
