How does Vision Score work?

My last game I used 28 vision wards, destroyed 10 wards, and bought 9 control wards. The enemy used 27 vision wards, destroyed 5 wards, and bought 2 control wards. I'm not understanding how my vision score was 65, and theirs was 74. I mean I don't really care (that's a lie, I totally do) since I know I warded more than them, just curious as to how they end up having a higher score than me. None of the wards I placed were placed for score. (You know how some people spam them in base / end of the game? Yeah, I didn't do that).Lux item 2301

It might depend on how much vision you actually gave, like how much of the map your vision actually covered

Interesting thought...though the game was relatively short, and it revolved around us being mid most of the time, so I still don't see how she could have more, since I counter warded her a lot(Ie I'm pretty sure I covered at least as much, if not more than her since I usually buy a lot of control wards). I guess the world may never know. -hangs head dejectedly-

I believe you get more points depending on a couple of other factors. One, how much of the map your wards covered. You'll see that top laners tend to get lower scores and junglers tend to get higher scores and this is because top is mostly warding just their area (worth less vision score) while the jungler is warding all over the map (worth more vision score) and often warding in the enemy jungle (worth even more).

Two, what your wards and vision saw. If you place a ward, and it dies without anyone every walking over it, that's worth less than a ward that sees a lot in a high traffic area. So if all other things are equal between supports, but the enemy support is better at predicting where the enemy will be next and warding accordingly, they will get more points.

Third, abilities that reveal vision will contribute to your vision score. Teemo's shrooms contribute to vision score, moreso when someone steps on them from fog of war. Ashe tends to get decent vision scores for an ADC because of her Hawkshot. So if the enemy support had something that reveal the enemy, this would contribute to their vision score. Although, considering you were Lux, you'd think you would have crushed in this category, seeing as your E grants vision. Lulu's E on enemies is another example.

Lastly, if your ward lasts the full 3 minutes, you get more points than if it was killed shortly after placing it. Same goes for killing wards: you get the most points from killing a ward if you kill it while it has a long duration left.

This is my analysis as I understand it given what Riot has told us. Good warding and better luck next time!

Good info, thanks for the response. I usually crush the enemy in the vision category, but the numbers didn't make sense so I had to ask. I find it ironic that me clearing their wards actually ends up contributing to their vision score. Thanks again :)

No problem. I was pretty excited when Vision Score first came out, so I did some reading up on it. I'd like to think it's helped me improve the efficiency of my warding. I too like to crush people in Vision Score. And yeah, I didn't really think about it, but it is weird that clearing a ward actually gives the enemy more points, but I reread that Riot post and basically each ward will get "stale" if it hasn't seen someone in a while. A "stale" ward has a modifier that subtracts points from the total you would normally get from a ward, but ultimately the ward placer will still lose out on points since you get more points the longer the ward lasts (you get about 1 point for every minute a ward lasts, with a minimum of 0.33 if it's killed immediately). They lose out on more points for the ward's shortened lifespan, where a "stale" ward, just loses a percentage of the ward's point value.

This is basically a long-winded and overcomplicated way of saying you get more points and they miss out on more points when you kill a ward. >.< Vision score is by no means a perfect value but I certainly like it better than the nothing of before.
