@Riot What is the strategic niche for Rod of Ages?

If you look at the stats of item 3027 , it seems like a really lack luster item now. At 10 stacks, it gives 500 hp, 400 mana, and 100 ap. Compare that to item 3165 , and you realize that morello gives a lot more a bit faster. Then if you compare it to item 3003 , sure you don't get the health, but you get more ap, 600 more mana, a fairly large shield, and mana refunds. 500 health is nice to have, but not when you can get more useful stats from other items. The eternity passive doesn't really feel that rewarding either, since you aren't really gaining a lot from it. I'd like to hear from someone who knows the reasoning behind this changes so I can maybe get a better idea on what they are supposed to do. Other than that, I really like the update so far.

It rewards you for getting hit. So its really strong on AP champs that commonly take hits. So Swain, Ryze, and Cho are the strategic niche.

It got nerfed, of course. And the new passive is horrid. But it's still the main item for mid lane mages. You get health, mana, and a bit of damage. Everything you need.

The new passive isn't horrible. It's great for AP junglers like Amumu, Elise, and Fiddlesticks, who can really benefit off of the extra HP and healing.
