State of Sona
This is coming from a Gold support main (or maybe not anymore, but I still play a lot of support games).
Sona has 58.5% winrate across all elos according to leagueofgraphs and champion.gg. While this may seem very high and op, I think she is right where she should be, it's other ("classic") supports that feel underwhelming.
When was the last time you said "we need to kill the support first"? I bet it was one of those Soraka games before she got nerfed. In almost every game since season 3 after a lost fight you see someone saying "wtf, don't focus support, we lost that fight because of that". And usually it is correct - supports are the lowest priority targets. They are walking warding bots who press
every other fight and provide a little bit of soft or hard CC and shield for about 200 in a meta where tanks die in 3 seconds. In a 4v5 you have highest chances to win a fight when your afk is support.
Now you are probably thinking: but wait, for example
are very useful! They provide great initiations and CC! Sure, but once the fight starts they are reduced to what I described, they are the last target you ever want to focus unless they are literally on top of you. Also many non-support champions provide good initiation:
to name a few.
Now, there are champions that are very close to where they should be, they are fun to play but underpowered

TL;DR Sona is balanced, other supports are weak. Until people start considering focusing supports in fights they are little more than glorified walking sightstones.

Lulu got nerfed that her solo laning doesn't happen that much at all anymore but is trash in the support role.
