Supports who pick Non-support Champs in Normals and Ranked matches...

Dear Riot Rep.

I am trying to learn new champs, and am choosing to do so thru "normals" matches on NA servers. I usually try AP champs as support picks because I cannot get mid picks easily, and i excel as a support player.

I am finding that I can make non support champs work after a lot of effort. Swain, Pantheon, Urgot, Illaoi all work well. Ryze not so much and Yorick not so much...

But what matters here is that I am scared of getting reported. I am getting a lot of anger from people AND ALL I WANT TO DO IS TRY A NEW CHAMP and learn a new champ!! And I repeat, these are normals matches.

Where else am I supposed to learn new champs? I cannot continue to safely learn them in normal matches, this i know now.

Sincerely,

Box

I wanted to say more, if that's okay!

What if... what if I wanted to play RANKED matches with strange support selections: such as swain or pantheon support? My Pantheon support is VERY legit!! But people don't believe this... I have seen people PLEAD in the champ select, asking me to not pick champs like these. I have seen people DODGE just because I am going with an irregular champ choice.

And it follows that, no matter how well lane phase went or how I did, I get reported for trolling at the end of these matches, whether they are normals matches or ranked matches.

Riot, what do you have to say about people who take uncommon champ picks for support? I am not supposed to, even if I am capable? What about the reports you get at the end of the match for these support players? Are they going to get penalized?

sincerely,

Box

I think as long as you play those champs AS supports, you shouldn't be reported. Most important thing is being Vision provider. I use unconventional supports all the time and I'm very comfortable, dare I even say knowledgeable, of my picks.

As for ranking, I don't think you can really blame teammates for not trusting you. I would have the same reaction if someone tries to pull a Yasuo bot lane. It would take a lot of explanation and convince for me to get on board with weird picks in ranked, but I'm not going to defend weird picks in ranked because it's a trying-hard mode and anything less is a disadvantage.

Off-meta picks are generally not reportable. I've seen some instances (Singed support taking Smite and invading the enemy jungle for the first 3 minutes or so of the game) where the negative impact to team morale was enough that Riot stepped in, but you're probably fine with most support picks. I've seen someone who takes Zyra support with Teleport/Smite and Relic Shield who has yet to be punished for it, so it's pretty much, "Do as you please as long as you stick with your lane."

Not to mention, Normal games are for experimentation (or pre-30). If a Smite/Teleport/Relic Shield Zyra in Ranked isn't bannable, I can't imagine Pantheon support in Normals would be. You should probably just make sure you can pull off at least a 40% win rate before you head to Ranked with it.

I saw someone once lock in Urgot support while I was playing ADC in a ranked match. I've had my fair share of off-meta supports - I'm an ADC main and my friends torture me with them - but Urgot was new, so I asked in chat, "You sure you know how to do this?" One of my teammates said "Wait what why Urgot Sup?" and the Urgot said "HE JUST LOOKS SO FREAKING COOL".

Ordinarily I'd go with it, but given that the Urgot took Heal and Barrier as support while I was taking Heal and Flash and wouldn't switch, my friend dodged for me.

Just my two cents. Get good with an off-meta support and then reassure your teammates you know how to play it. You should be fine.

Stop building Ardent on Swain, the healing doesn't apply to self heal and he has no heals or shields for teammates to have it benefit them either D;

That particular match was with Stoneborn pact as my keystone.

Check out Phreak's stream on Twitch.tv for info on Stoneborn / Ardent censer builds.
