Why do most vel'koz players play him in support?

Im a midlane Vel'koz main (200,000 mastery points) and am always excited when I see the enemy pick vel'koz. This has happened 10 times or so, and every one of those instances the enemy picks support vel'koz. (I am in silver 3, 1400 mmr.) Anyone know why people dont play midlane vel? Thanks ^.^

Cause he does plenty of damage when behind, similar to brand. You don't necessarily need gold to really destroy people on him

^This. His poke is stupidly OP lmao. Put him with someone like Ezreal or Caitlyn and it gets hella annoying. He also has decent cc in his kit. You should play him yourself in support role and you will see how strong his poke can be. He can easily drop enemy adc below half hp in one rotation if he hits his skills , excluding ult - might as well just kill adc if he uses his ult lol.

But honestly I have seen velkoz more on midlane than in support role.

Vel Koz is a great lane bully like Ziggs. Ever seen a Ziggs support?

Instead of poking 1 person down in lane why not 2 and get someone else fed in the process. When behind is kinda gutted early until late game. As Support you don't need to worry about blue buff as Vel support doesn't really need to spam his abilities instead 1 ability from Vel'koz and AA from ADC is enough to burst anyone to half hp.

They don't anymore, to my knowledge. Mid seems to be his most played role now, although he isn't played that much these days despite being stupidly OP.

Vel'Koz support drops off mid/late due to lack of gold/the need to build utility items such as sightstone.

He's much more common mid for that reason - reliability. The only way to be effective as Vel'Koz support is to ensure that your ADC wins the lane with at least a few kills to boot. Otherwise, failure to do so severely handicaps your ability to influence the game once the laning phase ends, because the effectiveness of your high base damage drops off and you're reliant on your true damage research proc to do any meaningful damage lategame.

Because they like losing late game.
