New Queue Feedback

I just wanted to put my thoughts out about the new queue system from a days worth of using it and stir up some discussion about it.

First the bad. And there is a lot of this. And no, I'm not just mad because its different. Its inefficient and more frustrating than the old champ select due to an increased ability to troll and foster negative feelings within a team. Now of course there can be negative feelings under the current system, and of course there are trolls under the current system, but this new queue system isn't helping those problems at all; and is instead exacerbating them.

What do I mean? While it is cool that I can take the time to select the roles I would prefer to play, there is the chance that I am going to get a troll on my team that plays whatever they want regardless of this. So now, in this situation, I have wasted time selecting roles that I could have called the old system. I realize the idea is to speed up queue times by matching people with preferred roles faster, but eventually people are just going to queue as support or just fill so they get into games faster; and then select whatever role they want the same way it is now. So, selecting preferred roles is both a waste of time and largely futile. This isn't the strongest of my problems with the new system, however, because hopefully most people will take the role selection seriously.

Next up is the select a preferred champion. This can be done in the chat during bans (bans are one of the things I like about the new system, ill get to that later) and doesn't need to be a second timer before champ selection actually starts. It is redundant in that you can make sure people don't ban who you want to play in the chat; the queue is just a time waste. But it also brings up a big negative. If I select an off meta champion, and someone on my team doesn't like the pick, they can ban the champion I was intending on playing. This may be the work of a troll, or it may be the work of a....we'll say quick to anger person. In either case, this really is unacceptable behavior as it doesn't just piss off the player who's champion was banned, but essentially "wasted" a ban when something else on the team would be heavily preferred. To avoid this problem, of course, one has to just not choose a champion during this period. But then we get back to the time wasting problem.

Essentially, these two things (more the second than the first) make the queue experience longer with very few positive effects resulting from it.

Now the good. It looks really awesome. I like hearing everyones selection quotes. And I like that the banning has changed somewhat, though I would like to see it change even more. Get rid of the bad stuff above and take the time in champ select to do a poll for banning champions, or have everyone vote on champions to ban, etc.

Please, leave your opinions (and critiques) below!

TL:DR Most of the features of the new queue system extend the time of the queue without improving anything and instead make the experience worse rather than better. Looks good though, sounds good, and I like the direction the bans are going in.

To be honest the torlls are just a time waster whichever queue you are in. Old, new, it doesn't matter they will still f*ck your day up just to watch the world burn.

Yes, but it is MORE frustrating when I'm taking the time to specifically choose what I want and have it denied from me as compared to just going into a ...crapstorm......knowing the risk. If the risk is exactly the same, I don't see why I need to jump through all the hoops. And thats what the new queue system feels like; a bunch of hoops to jump through that really aren't solving a whole lot (there are some positives).

I understand the basis for some of your negatives but I actually see those aspects as good things. You keep saying that communicating role and champion preferences can be done in chat. While that's true, I frequently find that half of my teammates don't communicate a preference, even when asked. I like taking a few extra moments up front if it means that everybody is forced to communicate some basic information about what and where they want to play. If somebody gets assigned mid and picks Ezreal, I can be reasonably confident he's going mid. I don't have to ask, "Mid or bot? Can I play adc?"

As for the people gaming the system by choosing support or trolling the system by deliberately choosing something different than what they queued for, I don't have a good solution for that problem. On the other hand, I am loathe to throw up my hands in defeat and say, "Well, the trolls win. This is why we can't have nice things." I'm willing to report people for unsportsmanlike conduct, at the very least. I grant that I'm unusually flexible and easygoing, so it's not going to completely ruin my game. I'll just play it out as best I can and then report at the end, "This player deliberately mislead the rest of the team about the role he intended to play for selfish and/or malicious reasons."

Fair points, but you do realize that players don't have to give any information in this new setup either? They can select fill for the role preference (which doesn't help much), although I suppose you can just do process of elimination for that, and can still opt to not choose a preferred champion (I usually don't select a champion at this point, I leave it blank) which means you still don't get a whole lot of information. Though you are right in that it will make determining where people are going a little easier.

Yea thats pretty much all you can do with the trolls. Report after and hope Riot has records of pregame chat and maybe even the actual champion selections, intended roles of summoners, etc to validate a report like that. Not much else we can do.

But the problem is a little deeper than that. Suppose you are playing Yasuo mid and I am jungle. You want me to play malphite because of synergy. I selected my preferred champion as udyr. You ban udyr to try to force me to play malphite. Scenarios where people don't like off meta picks etc are completely endless to come up with, and players shouldn't be allowed to ban champions their allies intended to play. And this kinda thing is less reportable than a troll going into the wrong role; because its basically impossible to prove that someone was banning maliciously (You could claim to see udyr as a threat, etc).

Now I know you are going to try to make the argument that if that is my concern, I should just not select a champion during the preferred champion thing. Yea, I can do that (I do do that), but then that part of the queue becomes a massive waste of time which takes me right back to my original argument.

I'm headed out to work so I have to keep this short. While I'd agree that nothing you've described here is trolling, it's still all behaviour where I'd say, just because people can and will abuse this new system is no reason to deny it to those of us who use it as intended to promote pre-game communication. I don't deny at all that the things you've described are happening. To my mind, however, that's not a systems problem. That's a community problem. Riot shouldn't have to bend over backward to prevent passive aggressive control freaks from abusing the new champ select.

From the perspective of an adult who often plays with other adults, I enjoy that this new system facilitates and, to a degree, automates, the pre-game conversations we often had anyway. To some extent, I see the arguments you've described as a variant of playground politics. "You'll play my way or I'll take away your toys!" Yes, the power structure for taking away the toys is formalized in the ban system but I think the real problem is a player who wants to ban a teammate's champ in the first place.
