Chogath buffs on pbe.. why?

GastonBarnacles··108 votes·6,982 views

The buff gives him 2 stacks for his ult on champion kills and if at full stacks it heals him. Does he really need these buffs? Maybe it isn't that big of a buff but he was strong already imo and I think many ppl agreed with me.

They are more usability buffs than anything. His ult (prior to PBE) had an awkward use case where:

  • Have less than 6 stacks? You save it for minions/monsters due to the reduced CD for doing so. That way, you can get stacks faster. (Ulting an enemy champion is generally something you avoid if possible.)
  • Have 6 stacks? You save it for baron/dragon or an enemy champion.

The PBE change makes it so killing an enemy will give you double stacks (to make up for not getting reduced CD) and also give a little incentive to use your ult on creatures for sustain.

being able to murder somebody should be the reward enough for the lack of cooldown.

Marthian10 votes

It never feels rewarding when you are trying to get stacks on your ult quickly.

Westonbirt5 votes

Why should you be allowed to do that.

Voluug1321 votes

Because every other single champion who has a stack mechanic gets more stacks on champion kill, and none of them actually lose them on death. Except Chogath.

That is why.

Redrum244516 votes

You're not wrong about the compensation on Chogath , but Draven also loses half of his stacks on death.

Voluug1310 votes

Yes, but that is part of Draven's risk factor, and they arent tied to a single ability, single ability only availble after level 6 no less.

Westonbirt5 votes

You have an ability that deals at max rank 650** true damage** SCALING WITH YOUR AP, whose cooldown can be as low as 48 seconds and it gives you at max rank 400 gold worth of HP per stack. You should have to think about how you want to use it_ AT LEAST A BIT_.

I understand the heal at max rank though, that makes sense.

Champion Skin6 votes

The problem with Cho'gath ult usually isn't when to us it... but to actually get in range to use it because Cho'gath has no mobility and his ult has a really short range

Westonbirt2 votes

That's why you have a silence to prevent dashes and an AoE knock up.

Champion Skin8 votes

The AoE knock up is highly unreliable (especially after the enemy gets boots and more MS) and while yes the silence prevent dashes for up to 2.5 seconds it doesn't help much when Cho'gath is so slow that he likely won't close much of the gap if the enemy just runs while they are silenced

Guinos2 votes

I agree, I play cho gath a bit and I think before I use my ult. Meaning if the other team is on the other side of the map then I'll ult minion but if they're nearby then I'll think twice about using it in case a team fight happens. I think at the moment cho is balanced.

Kaeblen1 votes

Is that why Darius gets to dunk an entire team, and Cho only gets one? I get that the champions are otherwise totally different, but the Massive True Damage Ult needs to be referenced against Something.

FistOfSharkiesha5 votes

The massive true damage wasn't enough incentive to use it? He was already in a decent place, basically being the juggernaut of mages, but he is in no position to be receiving buffs. He doesn't need to be overloaded.

Slightly buffing cho is same as slightly buffing riven

cho is one of my favorite champs because you can play him top and mid and even if your the worst last hitter in the game unless anivia is there youl end up with most cs

i main the jungle cause im bad at csing if i get stuck mid top cho/heimi r one of my better picks

but i really really get ur point here cho really doesnt need a buff

A Rioter commented on this in a balance Q & A , according to their data Cho'Gath is currently one the weakest of all champions in the current meta. He may feel strong, but he under performs significantly most of the time.

How can a champion that can deal more burst damage than many assassins, and has insane CC and true damage, in addition to being tanky even with a full AP build, be one of the wakest champions in the current meta?

SpecterVonBaren18 votes

Immobile with heavily telegraphed abilities and poor initiation power.

Kitten of Evil3 votes

He's incredibly slow, his Q is extremely easy to dodge, and he has no way to initiate or gap-close if enemies dodge it. He's actually even more kiteable than Darius. Enemies have to be stupid (or CC-locked) enough to stay near you while at low health, since you sure as hell can't chase.

Crossette4 votes

when a champion kills everyone in 3 hits with a fucking ROD OF AGES then something is wrong balancewise

RIP Tahm Kench2 votes

Who even goes rod of ages on cho? Flat mana doesn't really help his mana sustain (compete garbage even with his passive and a Doran ring) and he doesn't need to buy hp when going mid. Honestly Morello is pretty much the best item for him in mid, cdr to poke people down with silence, mana regen, and decent ap without waiting 10 min.

People hate facts here.

My Waifu Vanilla2 votes

It is also fact that laning against Cho'gath is very annoying and any sort of buff will just make people play him more. They could have added 3 base AD to him and his pick rate would have rose from what it is now just because they forgot about him and are like "oh yeah let me try this guy back out." Playing him may not feel very satisfactory but I really do not like dealing with a champion that has near infinite sustain and wave clear with a 2.5 second silence that is physically impossible to miss if you have any idea of how to move your cursor on top of someone. Oh and it has almost a 300 base to go with his true damage ult. Yeah Cho may not be the best champion in the world but he is a lot like Yorick in the sense he is super unfun to play against and really does not bring much to the team outside of unreliable cc in teamfights and damage.

Kaelnor14 votes

Apparently Riot wants Chogath to join the 50-100% FotM ban club. Cho is already strong as is, heck I can beat the Juggernauts with him without much trouble as is already. Giving him these changes would be ridiculous.

GastonBarnacles10 votes

Yeah he justs heals back all of the damage after a trade and pokes you with his auto attack e passive. You also cant really burst him so you have to do trades with him, and as i said he heals it back. My main issue with chogath is his passive. Mqkes him so oppressive in lane.

Kaelnor4 votes

Yeah I sorta main him and it's ridiculous. He can just refresh his health and mana just by farming CS. It's a stupid concept that with these changes will get less counter play.

Praetor Don14 votes

It's a secret plan to nerf his aoe silence :^)

ZzEslIolZQ8 votes

Cause he's garbage in a tank meta and mediocre in a non assassin mid meta. I know this board's silvers and golds love to cry about Cho but he's not that good of a champ.

TDubH9 votes

no he's a really good champ... in situations however these situations don't quite suit him, I normally play champions that go even against cho, that ult is a massive pain to deal with. the current situation is still bruiser juggernaut who build a lot of health, (Counter of Flat true-damage?, flat HP) so these situations don't suit him, so he's not that good right now TBH, i feel like his current iteration (not the buffs) is strong and doesn't need it, but equally the one thing i truly hate about cho, the one thing I CANNOT STAND is the fact that having max stacks and executing someone has no reward... its pointless, if i get eaten why does he have no rewar, it pisses me off, then again... I seem to like abuse.

HayRoss2 votes

He's a good champion with some flaws, like the fact that he's the slowest god damn champion in the game

"YOU SHALL NOT ESCAPE"

Yeah, I think he's talking to himself, there

Champion Skin2 votes

Yeah Cho'gath is rather strong but he is also rather helpless against mobile champions (especially if they have Banshees Veil as he has pretty much no way to deal with it)

A Vayne with Banshees Veil or QSS... Cho'gath's worst nightmare... as his Q, E and R will likely never hit her... (Banshee/QSS will negate the silence and Vayne has her Q and passive to avoid Cho'gath Q and to kite Cho'gath)

TDubH2 votes

You are C-C-Correct, however vayne is well vayne and ... Fuck Vayne :3 on a different note, you can go fishing with Cho'Q which can catch vayne, and if they have QSS not banshees you can go Q, hit? YAY FLASH OM NOM NOM NOM NOM NOM NOM NOM NOM NOM

Champion Skin1 votes

Well that could work just have your team around... because if you don't... the moment you miss Vayne might run you down with her Ult giving her even more MS from her passive and Blade of the Ruined king usually don't make things better either And there is pretty much nothing you can do... because... well without Q Cho'gath has nothing to stop Vayne other then flashing at her and 100-0 her with W + R (and the silence does pretty much nothing)

Well being alone against Vayne usually don't go well

TDubH1 votes

Yeah, vayne is a payne whenever he sees her my great Dayne barks and there is no Gayne especially when i walk into Layne agaisnt Vayne, well as they say when it Raynes it Pours, did little wayne say that? I guess i'm not Sayne...

HE HE HE HA HA HA

no, vayne does do well against cho'gath and sadly the only way to deal with vayne late game is to chain cc which makes it easier for cho'gath

Champion Skin2 votes

Vayne is so annoying to deal with... And well she teaches you fast to respect power spikes... (Or you will likely die to her a lot) Like if you are playing Caitlyn and you ever met Vayne alone after level 6 and she has item 3153 She will run you down and crush you so hard

(Well having your support around might save you)

Lugg7 votes

I wouldn't mind the changes if they cut his silence duration in half. If he hits 3 or more of the enemy team in a fight, the fight is over then and there since they literally can't do anything until it wears off.

GastonBarnacles5 votes

Yeah garen's single target melee silence sas reduced to 1.5 but cho still has his 2.5 second aoe silence with a real low cd. Same might go for malzahar? He is op though.

Raid Boss Morde3 votes

Low CD? A flat 12 seconds at all ranks is not low, especially when it's Mana cost shoots up to 110 at rank 5.

DarthSpectrum4 votes

They are more like consistency changes or QOL buffs rather than actually buffs.

The extra stack on champion kill will only encourage Cho'gath to use his ultimate on champions rather than on minions every 30 seconds. Realistically, his stack rate doesn't increase, since the CD on feast is reduced by 50% when he ults a minion or monster.

So rather than stacking feast for 3 minutes after hitting level 6 and then spamming the ultimate on the closest champion every time it is off CD, Riot is allowing Cho'gath to consider saving the ultimate for a champion kill instead.

As well, Cho'gath's ultimate already heals him IF he does not have 6 stacks. Giving him the heal even when he has max feast stacks does seem like a buff, but currently Cho'gath would just try to ult the carry at the beginning of a team fight to lay down some burst damage. With this change, Cho'gath might actually save his ultimate for a more opportune moment rather than just using it ASAP as mentioned earlier.

Troll for Trump2 votes

Maybe to make up for cinder nerfs... when was the last time you saw him or sej jgl? He can be played top too, and can shutdown the common annoyance known as Riven. You WANT to kill RIven's don't you? Cho is now recognized as a powerful champ(especially with a 2.5s silence, and that true dmg execute), but he kinda fell off. Riot wants him to be seen again, so they buffed him, although I think other cinderjglers would've been better options to buff.

Champion Skin2 votes

Ehh well Cho'gath is rather meta dependent Cho'gath is strong against immobile champions and combo casters And well he is also somewhat good at peeling (it makes his Q a lot more reliable)

And with other champions that have an initiate (as Cho'gath is really good at following up on engages with his Q)

But Cho'gath can struggle with mobile or long ranged champions

Feathermane2 votes

And what is up with all the heals? Fiora and Darius being such successful projects, you'd think they'd quit this crap. It ruins the immersion entirely when you see all these monstrous heals on damage dealing abilities with no sense or purpose.

LittleBlast4 votes

I think fucking devouring someone whole as a giant void monster might replenish a bit of his hp.

More likely to break his teeth, considering most of his targets are armored. Hardly healthful.

Dengeden2 votes

He's weak as sht, low range and a patently unreliable skill shot.

Cloud Potato3 votes

He has an AoE Silence and a True Damage nuke that scales with AP, both of which are point and click. If he was actually good he would be very unfair to play against.

Auz the Ripper1 votes

Point and click usually refers to targeted spells, of which Cho'gath only has his ult

FakeGravity2 votes

While his W look like a skill shot is a insta cash cone skills. If you are in the area you will get hit even if you flash so is very reliable in my opinion
