Because being a melee with long range farm ability, a built in sustain/cleanse, AoE wave clear AND global map presence was a really stupid idea. There was just nothing you could do to counter his laning phase. Push him him and he enjoys free farm, let him push in and he'll fuck your team over. Gank him and he'll laugh the CC off. Really there's no surprise he was 100% ban rate.
His laning phase is garbage until he has a Triforce, push him under tower and he can't farm everything perfectly due to mana costs and cooldowns. If he pushes you he's just a free gank, even if he has his oranges, 90% of the cases you'll have more than one CC or slow.
Imho he will keep being a top tier pick, the teamfighting is still there with his huge damage, even if he gets a couple barrels less in late.
