Hi guys. Need some help with Illaoi.

Hi folks, Gold I mid laner here. Currently trying to practice my top lane, and I was just wondering if there are any Illaoi players that can give me some helpful tips. My main concern is mana. I see most people rushing a Black Cleaver, but I seem to always be left without mana unless I get a Sheen to build into Trinity or Iceborn. And yeah I know how to play by conserving mana, but then it seems that Illaoi doesn't really fulfill her role of a lane bully. So is building Sheen first ok, or should I just be more wise about conserving mana and rush Black Cleaver?

Hmm well in my case I usually have a masteries set-up for mana along with the charge pot item and as long as I don't waste too many spells without reason it's usually decent enough for mana. If you do get iceborn then I might suggest taking it instead of cleaver entirely going for other tank items. Also remember you can just buy the crystal first initially get other basic items then later upgrade it to sheen if you need to be tankier.

Aside from that general tips:

  • W tends to be the most consistent damage and maxing it first is often best (followed by Q now since it now decides all tent damage)
  • While you want to try to harass generally you are a defensive character and need to watch getting too far away from your tentacles
  • In general you are always better of staying in range of tentacles, even if ganked if your aren't sure you'll escape heading to the most tents will be the best choice as you can often just kill them both (especially if ult is up)
  • Remeber you heal per champ hit so that gank and an E clone means you can heal 15% of missing HP per tentacle attack allowing you to survive way more then you might expect (full combo tripple hit would be 45% of missing HP)
  • Remember that E causes tents to swing immediately so can act as a direct attack instead of just for harassing (especially good to remeber when you ult)
  • Also remember that you can heal off the E clone, so even if you net a tank and aren't really hurting with level 1 E you can still regenerate a lot of HP from it...

That's all off the top of my head as initial thoughts. I guess as for general build keep in mind your teamcomp, if your a high damage team then focus moreso on building tanky and vice versa, a common mistake is always wanting to go bruiser damage builds when you need the survivability more.

Word of warning. Illaoi is generally a bit UP for now, tending be very VERY feast or famine.
