Does Poppy Really Need Nerfs?

Hammer Shock (Q) damage reduced to 35/55/75/95/115 from 40/65/90/115/140 Heroic Charge (E) range reduced to 425 from 525 Iron Ambassador (Passive) bonus range lowered to 300 from 400

Ah, Riot you done it again. Again, you decide to gut a pretty balanced champion.

Yes, we believe she's one of the strongest champions in the game at present when mastered. In particular she's got a combination of fighter strengths and tank strengths. We're looking to focus her a bit more on her more unique aspects, the middle of the fight disruptive approach in particular. As a result we're testing changes that reduce her back line access somewhat (and just cut a bit of raw power from her in her Q damage).

Making it so she has to build damage to 100-0 a carry would be awesome.

She's really strong right now pretty overbearing to deal with.

I would say taking 50 damage off her Q at max rank will probably do that, so that's good.

Do you, like, think her W's only an move speed boost or something?

I feel like the implications of that alone have been lost on you, especially considering the way the dash prevention manifests.

I'm not entirely sure why the concept of a champion with an ultimate and a basic ability bothers you so much. There's only like 129 champions in the game with that set up - it's hardly unusual.

Okay?

Since when was this conversation about that at all? It's been about how her W is boring from the start.

Yeah, but take Riot's goal here - reducing Poppy's damage and ability to dive the backlines. About the only thing her W does towards either of that is the movement speed, and even with that boost being pretty strong it's still far less reliable than a dash, because it's just movement speed. Plus the uptime is pretty crappy.

Though I do have to wonder if they can nerf the cast range without touching the travel range - personally, I think that would make more sense than reducing both.

The problem is that she isn't in a niche spot, she's being picked every game into almost anything, and at the same time doing well, at that point you know something is wrong.

Is it alright if I ask for any context on the Rammus nerfs? The nerfs are reasonable, sure. But care to explain why Rammus needs the nerfs?

I mean if you think the nerfs are reasonable than surely you already have your answer? They wouldn't be reasonable if they were unnecessary.

Knowing something is reasonable is not the same as knowing the reason behind it.

Well I mean it all comes down to "He's too strong" at the end of the day. And you can pretty safely guess from the nerfs that a) he's doing too much damage for how tanky he is and b) he's able to fight people more often than he should be.

AvatarRoku222 votes

Seriously? Nerfing her that hard off the bat? I play poppy as AD/armor pen as opposed ot the popular bruiser/tank so the reduced flat damage (although its a lot) doesnt bother me as much. Nerfing the range on her passive AND charge by 100 is a bit ridiculous. How is that supposed to emphasize "unique aspects"? How are the ranges on those abilities making her not a mid-fight disruptor? I hope these changes never make it to live. i dont wanna have to find a new main because my current one gets gutted (again... rip skarner)

Blackquill1 votes

I agree with the intention of nerfing her generally but nerfing 3 things at once seems a bit too much to start with, especially when she loses a full 100 units range on both her passive and her E. Why dont you just nerf her Q (current PBE numbers seem fine), cut away 50 units on her passive, let E range be 525 and then see where it goes?

Seize The Kills2 votes

From the proposed changes, I worry she'll be gutted as a support.

She's already very susceptible to being poked out in botlane and the range nerf to her E and range reduction on the passive will make it very hard for her to do much of anything vs a pokey bot lane.

Support poppy will survive a nerf of her Q but it's a pretty harsh since support poppy's already build very little damage.

Old Man Teeto7 votes

Didn't you ADD 100 range to her E after launch to help her get to the backline better?

Kinjishi5 votes

Don't worry, they'll want her to be something else next month.

RiotMeddler2 votes

We did add some range to Poppy's E yeah. Conclusion at this point is that that was potentially a mistake and something we might revert.

what if you reduced her stun duration at e rank 1?

5050BS1 votes

lowering the damage on her Q and the range on her charge and the duration of the lower ranks of the stun would do it.

Having a 1.6s stun on rank one was a BAD BAD move.

1.6 at lvl 1-3 is HUGE

Jared Fenrir1 votes

I guess this was kind of inevitable since the top laners that were stronger than her all got nerfed. I don't really want to see her get the nerf bat, but that's just not going to happen. I'm with you guys on the lowered damage on Q, but I feel like the range nerfs are a bit much and you could touch on other things like the stun duration, and passive cooldown instead.

Flemman1 votes

first rammus, then poppy, can we expect some graves nerf too this patch ?

alfavhunter1 votes

I feel the need to her E range takes away from her champions "feel" to much

As an alternative idea how about changing her E range to 625 but it doesn't push back past 650 regardless of range so she could use E at max range and only have a push back of 25 or use E from on her target for a potential push back of ~650

So a max range E would get you to the target with near no "push" while a close range E will have a short dash but a much larger "push" this would make her still want to dash at about 425 range when trying to push a target to a wall from a distance but also gives the option of a close range dash with a lot of "push" effect

Rain NT4 votes

But saying all of that, I would only nerf her Passive range, CD and shield; And Q hitbox a .3s longer delay on the second Q proc and nerf her E range. I wouldnt touch her damage though.

She just wins too much trades with her passives imo. If they tone that down a bit then it would make her balance. But still would be a strong pick cause of her damage, but it will be more reliant on stunning people so get that damage off against skilled players.

Ralanr4 votes

I feel the range nerf is a bit much.

ShadowBash2 votes

Yes to be honest. She does way too much damage for how little she builds.

Stephenizgod2 votes

Dumpstered? uh no more like normal nerfed.

She is way too strong, she deals Fighter Damage but is tanky like a Tank. She can harass and deny farm/xp from almost any Top laner and beating her requires at least triple the skill required to play her. She deals far more damage to you than you can to her, thanks to her Passive.

ArlanKels2 votes

It's almost like Riot is looking at the Tanks doing TONS OF DAMAGE and going "Hmmm.....maybe we need to stop that?"

Umirinmahgains2 votes

Absolutely agree with the nerfs. Maybe removing 100 range on E is too much, though. Try 50. Poppy is the #2 top laner in the game atm, only loses to pre-nerfs Fiora (maybe still after nerfs) and Trundle. Trundle is supposed to win that 1v1 by kit design, so no surprise there. If you combine the fact that her laning phase is excellent 1v1 and in lane swaps her aoe + %hp damage help the duo jungle a lot, she doesn't have any downsides to picking her in terms of opening-game strategy. She then goes on to be a great split pusher with IBG, but is also absolutely phenomenal in team fights and for flanking. Her ultimate is extremely strong when used properly, and her back line threat due to massive cc potential (part of which can't be cleansed), ability to deny dashes, and %hp damage makes her an all around strong pick regardless of team comp. So I'd say she's lacking an actual weakness right now.

Malix Farwin2 votes

gonna laugh when she becomes trash tier. Its fine if you want to nerf her but that is too much.

Rain NT1 votes

Oh yeah a slight nerf. I main top lane and play almost every champion beside Riven, and she basically dumpsters on 97% of them haha. Only Trundle Ryze and Yorick does decent against her BUT THEY STILL NEED TO PLAY REALLY WELL to beat her. And if you know how to play top lane really well, you can deny farm and experience all day and snowball off of that. And she will do just that to about anyone AND DEFINITELY if shes ahead, if shes ahead there is no champion that can face her for like 20-35mins.

Let me tell you she beat a Fed pre nerf yi, a fed Irelia, a fed Jax, a fed Tryn 1v1. She destroys anyone if they ahve to come close to her to fight.

Sad Tyrant1 votes

Why dont you play Poppy against her. But y'know what also counters her: Good positioning she cant get most her damage on you if you can't be stunned. Armour is also very effective. Maokai is a great counter along as you build void staff. Zac is semi decent cause you can fake out her W but she can block your initiation. Lane bullies like Wukong and Renekton can be effective as long as you don't dash.

one last piece of advice, don't go near walls. ever.

Shes a tank killer though, when they are melee range atleast. Her Q does hp damage and the delay is not long enough to get out of it without losing the trade hard. If you try to escape the second proc of Q you are losing prob 1 second of the skirmish where Poppy can deal free damage and walk away. And theres litterally too many walls top lane, if you screw up once youll prob gonna lose the trade hard. LIKE HARD... and by then she can probably force you to go back to base or deny you from farm and CS. Its too punishable, so they are decreasing the range on her E.

Look at it this way, she can basically win every trade cause she has a shield and extra damage from his passive. Her Q does hp damage. Her W gives her free resistance stats and MS. She can also stun+gapclose with E. AND she can stop any kind of dashes/jumps or get away any kind of fights/bad situations with W and R. She has natural damage and wins trades with just her Q, passive and grasp of the undying. Against super hard matchup top like renekton or wukong she can just build sunfire and straight up win the duel everytime cause the armor + her W will give her enough resistance to deal with them and not to mention that shield from her passive............ You seriously cant win trades against her. And even matchup she supposely lose to Ryze maybe Zac definitely Yorick and Trundle, she can still do decently against them cause how reliable her kit is.

But even so, I like her damage, its not too crazy. The strength about Poppy is the fact YOU CANT WIN TRADES. Her passive and Q alone wins trades and her W and E are just bonuses.

NOT TO MENTION NOT TO MENTION SHE GETS TANKIER WHEN SHES LOW HP.... wtf lol someone remove this trait of her please its not needed.

Sad Tyrant1 votes

Her Q and her passive do need the Nerf, if the trading is that bad. Playing against her is similar to playing against illaoi. STAY AWAY FROM WALLS, that is the easiest part. And on your first back MR and ARMOUR, MR for her passive and Grasp

Rain NT1 votes

The different between illaoi and poppy is that you can dodge his tentacles even if you are near a wall and you arent stunned, with poppy if youre near a wall youre stunned and take damage, its guaranteed cc and bonus damage and she will hit you with a Q afterwards as follow up damage. And you cant just dodge all the walls without missing cs (when shes ahead) not to mention if you dont farm under turret where she can stun you to your wall OR your TURRET you will lose out on gold. shes just ridiculous atm. Her passive needs a nerf for sure. I've seen Poppy proc her passive E into turret Q aa W and runs away and wins that trade even under turret AND to add insult to injury, you will prob lose cs while trying to protect yourself. Its pretty obnoxious..

Btw, I think poppy is a better version in general than Illaoi..... but ironically Illaoi is probably one of the champion that can actually lane against Poppy cause you dont need to be in melee range to do damage. And Illaoi is tanky enough to handle her if since he wont be in melee range all the time to cs.

Ralanr1 votes

As having fought Poppy as Illaoi, let me tell you that the match up is not in Illaoi's favor. Especially if the Poppy is aggressive.

And top lane Poppy is very aggressive.

Yea but the range on her E makes her viable against ranged top champs like Quinn and Vayne. What is she too do now? She's gonna have to use her W more often not just to use her passive or E.

Let me tell you she beat a Fed pre nerf yi, a fed Irelia, a fed Jax, a fed Tryn 1v1. She destroys anyone if they ahve to come close to her to fight.

This isn't true. Even post-nerf Yi will rip Poppy's head off 1v1. Irelia probably can, and Jax and Tryndamere definitely can.

She's strong in lane, but her damage falls off. Does she need nerfs? Probably, but she's not beating an actual duelist late game.

Rain NT1 votes

Dude it is true, I main irelia and know the match up is bad for Irelia after level 6. That matchup basically forces Irelia into going sunfire first item because poppy will destroy anyone squishy.

My friend mains pre nerf Yi and even when he was fed, an even scored Poppy beat yi because Poppy W resistance increase + her passive + the fact she gets tankier when shes low on hp to all source of damage makes it hard for high dps champions who are melee to deal with her because if you have to chase her to fight her she can bait you into following her into a potential stun. Long extended duels are her bestfriend because her shield will always come up and not to mention her E and Q which are essential to her kit, but you cant just stand infront of her either cause you cant keep getting hit by her Q cause it does HP damage. Her damage is better than mediocre while being too hard to duel cause she has too internal tankiness.

And she is a direct counter to Tryna since it doesnt matter if Tryn has all his item. Poppy is too tanky for Tryn to kill while Tryn is too squishy to duel with her decent DPS + cc and chasing potential. Jax and Irelia are the best bet against her but I main both of them and let me tell you its a losing matchup late game. Except for maybe Jax at 6 items but even then Poppy can outplay that duel if she can avoid stun with W and R and bait Jax to a wall.

So a Jax and Irelia main in me and a Yi main both diamond are saying that all of them has a disadvantage against A GOOD Poppy. Its undeniable either cause right now she is the best top laner in the game even in competitive not only in soloque. The whole reason she falls off late game is cause as Irelia I can kill the carries faster then she can cause Irelia chasing potential and damage are both better then Poppy. But even then Poppy is too tanky to deal with and its not like her damage is terrible late game. Making her too good early to mid game while still being decent late game with her disruption in teamfights. It doesnt mean she still cant lose.. I havent lost lane with Poppy yet even though I havent even mastered her. The only time I lost with her is when the jungler camps me, BUT EVEN THEN I still win 1v1. Now that is saying something lol.

She is getting nerf because she is DEFINITELY the best right now in terms of what you want out of your top laner. She was not made to be a duelist (well not anymore) but her outplay between IN every matchup are way too high and its so easy to do.

Like here are the rules when youre facing her:

You cant chase her cause she will just bait you into a wall, so you cant chase her for too long. You cant stand infront of her or in melee range cause you will just eat a Q. You have to be smart when her passive is up. Cause she will probably use it to win the trade. You cant be squishy cause her damage potential post level 6 and with sheen is enough to kill you if she stuns you. You cant be squishy because her E range is so long she will gap close to you, even use a minion to do so. You cant dash to her or away from her if her W is up cause youll just take free damage and she'll get away or engage the fight. If you dont have a lot of damage, you cant fight her. Cause shes too tanky and she does constant damage.

Now that is a lot of things you cant do when facing her.. Riot needs to address one or three of these problems. Like the theory you trade tankiness for damage. But you need both to beat Poppy, but I cant think of any to do that beside Yorick or Trundle but even then they cant both lose if they play the lane wrong.

I'm not going to pretend to understand balance at extremely high levels of play, I'm not there and may never be.... but It's really disheartening to see your favorite champion get gutted across the board all at once.

The E nerf is the one thing that's really killing me here. In my opinion it is the most defining ability on her kit and knowing when and how to use it to consistently get the most out of it is what separates the good Poppy players from everyone else. I play her almost exclusively jungle (I think I have taken her top like....once) and that would be the ability I'd be the saddest to see ruined.

I've never been an advocate for "maining" a champion in a game with over 100 choices but rework Poppy is the closest I've ever come to that and I'm not looking forward to having to ditch her when you guys go overboard (and it looks like that's the case).

On a side note, this nerf reminds me heavily of the nerf to Maokai's W range a while back.....one that absolutely killed his jungle for me.
