they went afk around 15-18 mins in, we lost at 22 mins in. yeah.

But losses via afks happen to everyone, so they're built into the ranking system. You're rather lucky, actually, that you got your leavers in one game rather than spread out over several games.

Here's the thing though. Any given player in a match has a chance of leaving. I don't know what this number is, let's call it 0.5% (or "x"). If you are not a leaver, that means your team has a 2% (4x) chance of having a leaver, while your opponents have a 2.5% (5x) chance.

Unfortunately, there's that confirmation bias thing. As humans we remember more notable things better than less notable things, and having the leaver on your team is generally more notable. So despite leavers (slightly) more often being on the other team (for players who themselves never afk), we are doomed to remember ourselves getting screwed substantially more.
