Why Edge of Night is Balanced
Edge of Night is getting a lot of hate recently, but does not deserve it. It is an item that was introduced into the game in a healthy manner, and is only bought as part of the lethality trend the game is experiencing.
The main reason for this is the shield. Everyone is complaining about how the shield is retardedly over powered with it's low cool down. But for how weak spell shields really are, the cooldown deserves to be that short. I play mages in mid, where assassins with eon are rampant. I have never noticed the supposed "strength" of the item. I just tickle them with a Casssie e or a ryze q. It then goes away for the next 40 seconds before I have to spend another 40-60 mana.
It is also a way better alternative to Maw as the mr lethality item. It does not have a triggered in combat passive that becomes overbearing in extended fights, and cannot be effectively used without forethought and planning. It is a much healthier item in general.
The only reason people pick it up is because yeah, having a shield is helpful, it provides some protection from maybe some cc, but the real reason is the ad and lethality. Armor Pen will always be strong the way it is currently coded, but that is an entirely other discussion.
both of which have either a reset or extremely low to almost non-existent CDs, so they can easily afford to waste a spell to pop that shield and it wouldn't effect them at all or at the worst case delay them maybe 1-2 seconds. However, when you are playing actual mages with CDs and not mages that feel like you were in URF, wasting a spell to pop the shield will really hinder your DPS or delay you a bit.
as their first 2 items and have 110 MR (adding the base 30 MR). Then if they wanted to make their mage opponent even more useless could also get
and put them at almost 150 MR while not really hindering their own damage...while mages are left with only
as their only AP/Armor item which is one of the weakest mid lane AP items in the game.
ulting you from the back with EoN active. Your only real option would be to run away and try to live it, since by the time you get close enough to them, hit them with a random spell to proc the shield and then CC them to stop the ultimate, their ultimate is already over with and the damage already done. I guess in
AD just to abuse it because that is another champion that would be broken with having a spell shield they can control.
