The Honor System

So I'd heard rumor, and then found a few RIOTer posts about the matter. Set off to find out for myself, which is sorta how this account got started initially.

I get honored, over and over and over. Near on every single game at least once, 2-4 times fairly often. I'm occasionally a sarcastic ass, but don't flame people, say any of the usual chat catch phrases that are popular now days, don't go AFK or Int.

Every 2-3 games, I run across a troll, who I decide to 'give advice to' in a purposely friendly and upbeat manner... and of course become the focus of their rage boner and they report me. Inidentally, despite the few hundred honors per month on average... I am barely into level 2 honor. Now then - RIOT has openly said on these forums that, if you are being reported - your honor leveling will slow, or even stop.

NOT if you are punished... I've never even been warned, let alone chat restricted or banned. Simply if people are reporting you, your honor gains will slow until it basically stops.

Here is the question. Considering the known toxicity of trolls in the community... WHY would you grant them the power to then limit, if not entirely nullify, yet ANOTHER rewards system for other players?

It's bad enough that trolling is common in games from ARAM, to Twisted Treeline, all the way up to people complaining about it in Diamond, making players lose out on those rewards. WHY would you then grant those same trolls power over yet another automated system? Lack of learning? No foresight? Wtf?

That's my question. I don't really give a crap about the honor rewards, but I -do- care that people are being allowed to be trolled even OUTSIDE of the games.

Not if you are just reported, if you are reported validly. So you're being mildly toxic, but not enough or with enough frequency to really earn any actual punishment.

The system never seems to have much trouble handing out valid punishments for valid reports, so why would this be a quiet, in the background form of punishment? It's a form of punishment the player doesn't even know is happening.

Furthermore, if the player is actually completely unaware of it until they realize their honor isn't moving... what are they doing that is a valid reason to punish them passively? Do they know? Have they any way to even find out? Did they chat too much, tell someone to screw off once? How can they know what not to do, beyond stay in an eternal limbo of 'You were naughty, but not bad enough for us to tell you."

This is why people are afraid to even chat now.

I gotta say, you guys need to look into this stuff more. Look into reporting more. Consider INTENT and not just actual language. Consider inting vs bad game. Because this stuff is not being addressed properly nor is everyone being given a fair shake. I've made numerous posts about this and given hard data to back stuff up only to ever be ignored. For example, let's look at two scenario's below:

scenario 1 - adc not punished, not flagged toxic or intentional feeding toplane - stuck 1v2 half of laning phase, ganked about 5x, 2/2/0 kda, ahead in cs botlane - largely 2v2, ganked maybe 2x after receiving adequate warning via pings and having very real option to back off (i.e. not flashless and stunned by enemy tower), gotten plenty of friendly gank attempts botlane - dies for 4th time 2v2, is now 1/4/0 (sup is 0/4/1). toplane - hey bot, just hug tower and try to farm up, you don't have to win lane; we can do this botlane - forces fight on enemy by their tower, again w/o any vision... dies 2v2, gains nothing, lose tower toplane - pls just play safe and farm up, don't fight botlane - dies again this time 3v2, they get a 1 for 3... that's right 1 kill for 3 deaths (now 2/6/0 kda; combined bot duo kda is 2/12/2) toplane - guys, you just have to farm and you will be able to carry teamfights, pls stop fighting botlane - stfu noob top; we can fucking win; proceeds to intentionally steal cs, refuse to work with team to defend towers or get objectives, flame any mistake by anyone who's said a single thing to them

scenario 2 - toplaner toxic, punished jg - single ping and goes to gank lvl 3 toplaner toplane - pings lvl 2, pings danger (back off) several times, pings minion wave he must deal with jg - ignores, dies 1v1, gives enemy top double buffs; stupid noob toplane; not ever ganking again, muted, reported toplane - I told you I was level 2 and not to gank... several times, you wait for me to clear giant minion wave and we could have pulled it off jg - goes and makes risky invade to enemy jg, dies again, baits mid to death, dies to collapsing enemy toplaner, spam pings top... follow your fucking laner toplane - pinged well in advance that he was mia; you stayed another 10 sec knowing you'd be 1v2 or 2v3. You shouldn't invade if you don't have map pressure on that side; I can't fight or follow my opponent who has a level lead and double buffs advantage because you ignored me earlier and fed him. mid - top reported toxic, flamer ... blah blah blah, more of this, increasing level of harassment by mid and jg directed at toplane, bot lane gets involved, sides with jg cuz omg, he came bot 2x and got us assists, so toplane must be the problem ... 4 losing teamfights ... 32 min ish into game jg decides we NEED to fight over cloud dragon when we have 0 vision, can't even win a 5v4 away from our tower, and are down in sums. top - pings no/danger repeatedly, pings lack of vision, pings alternate objectives that could be more safely taken during this time. jg - ignores pings, forces 3v5 fight at cloud drag w/o wards. Dies in 1.75 sec to enemy burst and cc. Angrily spam pings mia on toplaner, spam pings tp available. Types that toplane lost them the game in less than friendly manner. mid - flames top, spams reported, spam pings tp bot - flames top, spams reported for afk/non-participation top - idiots, we can't fight that, we had 0 vision, we can't win even 5v4; don't fight there. Get stuff done on rest of map. We could have snuck baron, or gotten mid and top towers as a trade. I can't tp if you don't ward. I am not suiciding by tp into what would be a 2v5 by the time my tp could even complete. When I fight with you, you just run away and don't back me up and flame me for "feeding" cuz I engage 5v5 like you ping you want to do only to have you all run away or die in 1.5 sec. If I split and 1v2 have pressure, you guys force 4v3 and get aced vs 3 of them, then blame me for splitting.

Now, the toplaner in scenario 2 SHOULD be punished for calling his teammates idiots. However, his teammates have 0 right to flame his every decision. They themselves... fed needlessly and REPEATEDLY and they were far from honorable or nice to him. They themselves should also be getting at least equal punishment.

In scenario 1... is that not a much similar case for the adc as it was for the toplaner in scenario 2 barring the fact that... in scenario 1, the bot laner is inting and is not being flamed vs not inting toplaner and being flamed? Does the botlane not react with a similar outburst of unacceptable behavior and speech? Yet, that player has nothing done to them... despite being toxic AND arguably intentionally feeding. While the latter is punished despite being completely correct and responding coolly or ignoring the escalating flame and harass of teammates for over half a game before blowing up and calling his teammates idiots for forcing an unwinnable fight and then blaming it on him not being there. Why is the latter punished and... neither the latter's teammates nor the adc from scenario 1 punished? That seems very much hypocritical. Yet that is exactly what happens in some games.

So the honor of the toplaner, who tried much harder than his teammates or the adc from scenario 1 to keep his cool and be a team player... gets punished and has his honor tank to 0. The adc has nothing happen to them. The intentionally feeding and flaming jg from scenario 2? He gets 3 man honored for being such a good, helpful teammate. Talk about valid punishments lol. And can the toplaner ever get his honor back up to the honor 3 it was? Can he climb to the honor 5 he is on pbe? No, cuz saying anything to teammates who are having a bad game to try to help them (like he did with adc in scenario 1) gets him flamed, harassed, and "reported, toxic". Meaning said player will take insanely longer to climb - if he ever does - back to reasonable honor level... meanwhile, toxic and/or intentional feeding teammates... enjoy 3 man honors, enjoy high honor level, and continue needlessly ruining the game for other players who don't mindlessly follow them to needless deaths and throw very winnable games... turning them into ones where the outcome is already known to be a loss, but you are stuck playing another 20 minutes to reach that point. Tanking the honor of more people who merely try to help them via encouraging them to play safe when they're behind or point out lack of vision in hopes that their team will maybe play it smart and not give the enemy team easy 5v2 kill potential. That is NOT an honor system which rewards good play and punished bad play.

I know how you feel. I had an arguement with a troll who basiclly was trying to lie about me, which ended up getting be chat restricted. This was like back in Janurary, about time the season just started. But I've been stuck honor 1, I go support (now mostly top/mid) and often got a decent amount of honors. But I barely progress, I recently got to the 2nd checkpoint. Riot even said they made it easier to return to honor 2, but honestly it feels like I make no progress. Could be the ocassional person who just wants to hate or troll like crazy that could be slowing it.

If what you say is true, might also be what contributes to my issue of trying to reclaim honor. Because I was honor 5 before the restriction.

I do admit, I dislike how a few people could easily negatively harm you outside of a match because they didn't get what they want. You coulda been trying a new champ and be 0/5 or so, but get slower honor because they reported you. Now I question if that "slow" or such, actually is perm. So let's say a report slows your honor down and it's back like 2-3 months ago. Will that reset to normal progression over a certian amount of time or will it just continue to add up over time until the next season? Or is it one of those, after earning so many honors, the "slow down" stops. Kinda like # of honors are void until they pass that total? Ex : 15 honors are void, once you get those 15. The rest following that will count toward progress. (Granted I'd prefer that over just simply each honor meaning less as it continues).

What astonishes me is that, apparently, you can have it happen even without you getting a -punishment-... so they give you a backhanded punishment that you don't even get NOTIFIED about. You don't even know you've done something -wrong-, but are still being punished. Basically I set out to find out something, found out it's true, and really don't care for it.

I agree, I wish I had more of an understanding of my status (like on a scale, less toxic or more. Or standing on good ground). If there was more of an immediate hint like somethings they directly count, could help players reform. So let's say you said something that you didn't really process as an insult or rude, but the system does. Then the system could directly tell you that you were reported for it rather than simply letting it add up. It sucks that when someone gets punished like restriction, they don't even know what lead up to it most times. They assume the last game (which may have been a decent game or one they said nothing). Plus the feedback doesn't show if they are "trolling" or such. If someone knows they are going toward the side of punishment, they can reform before they reach the point of being chat restricted or banned.
