I personally feel that top lane is his most effective lane at the moment. (You can play him adc if you want to, it just takes a really good support to carry you to snowball) As far as what to run, I prefer going flash and teleport, using the tp to secure dragons with the team and push aggressively on a lane till you get a tower.
An example build I've been using on morde is: Rylais, Swifty Boots, Deadmans, Sunfire, Spirit Visage, Thornmail. (I've been meaning to try out frozen heart. I mathed out that it is still an efficient item if you believe that the passive is worth at least 300 gold.) I like to run these masteries. http://pyroblasty.github.io/masteries/#K0CvK2vYKxCly For runes, I prefer m.pen reds, scaling health yellows, 6 cdr p lvl blues, 3 flat mr blues, 1 flat mr quint, 2 flat armor quints.
This rune and mastery set up with the example item build gives you a lot of tankiness and you stay relevant damage wise with the rylais, your base damage, and the deathfire. I have tried grasp of the undying and thunderlords decree and I find them lack luster on morde. The build should give you 4k hp exactly, making your passive shield you for a total of 1000. Everytime you press e you get 1000 shielding, so you are on or above mundo levels of tankiness. I feel 20% cdr is a necessity as it brings your ultimate cd down so that it has 100% up time if you get a ghost.
Solo Lane Skill order R>E>Q>W. Put your first point in E at level 1. At level 2 you want to take Q. Put your third point in W and start maxing according to the skill order. For bot lane, you want to put your first point in W and push the first two waves super hard, or only the first wave if you take krugs/gromp with your support.
When laning top, most champions will beat you early, so watch out not to get cheesed. Don't play scared, just stay safe and don't push super hard, try to keep the wave in the middle of the lane. If you use e, make sure you hit the enemy laner if possible as it does quite a bit of damage with the deathfire touch. Try to stay in lane long enough to get a needlessly large rod on your first back, but don't stay if you are going to lose too much cs staying. Rush rylais, it is a massive power spike and usually on completion you can start really bullying the other laner. I frequently play in lane against Darius and once you get rylais, as long as you are at least even on gold, you can out duel him if you play it well. If you find yourself pushed under tower, remember that Q is an auto attack reset and can help you last hit. Don't waste your health spamming spells if you aren't killing a minion with it or harrassing an enemy. Early on, do not start the fight, just poke them. If they go in on you, pop your w on a nearby minion with full health if possible and use your Q auto reset, back off after you get the third Q hit.
It is worth noting that pantheon is extremely hard to deal with early, as his passive can block your Q hits. In this lane, just farm up, make good teleports and scale up. You play like a more damaging mundo late game, but you are slower. This is why I like to get swiftness boots with alacrity and deadmans, as you become quite fast with these built and will have no problem sticking to champions with your rylais. You want to prioritize the physical dps champions on your team, but remember, getting any ghost is better than not getting one, so feel free to ult a tank if your team is going to kill them. It is almost always worth it to ult someone who gets picked by the enemy team, even if it is a guaranteed kill as you can then put on a ton of pressure to a turret, baron, or dragon. You can use dragon to solo baron fairly early in the game, if the enemy team lets you that is. Your dragon pet also doesn't follow you on a leash range like normal ghosts, so make sure you are using it effectively while you are recalling, as proper use of the ghost is really important and impactful on the game.
This should help you get started to learning mordekaiser. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. Good luck, I hope these tips are useful to you.
P.S. Warding is key to playing solo lane morde. You are essentially the easiest champion in the game to gank.
Also, I find the best starting items on him is a dorans shield and hp pot. If you aren't the only front line on your team and you are ahead, feel free to get a liandrys in place of one of the other items, as it paired with the rylais and deathfire touch is pretty scary.
How do you feel about hextech gunblade or will of ancients. Also how would you gapclose as morde on a enemy target without rylais and is he good for lategame?
i recommend you dont play him hes overnerfed it would be better to play another champion but if you want to play him heres the build and ability max
R>Q>E>W> or R>E>Q>W>
Gunblade and Wota are solid items, however I feel you don't really need the sustain with the new W. Feel free to try them out as you develop your own style of morde tho. Before the rework, I considered wota to be core and he certainly uses the items well. With Rylais, Deadmans Plate and Swiftness Boots with the alacrity enchantment, you really don't have trouble getting into range of people and sticking to them with the rylais slow. Whatever you do, you must take rylais, it is a massive boost in your power as a champion and helps address his lack of mobility and lack of cc. He is extremely good late game. You are like a more damaging, harder to kill Dr. Mundo with less mobility and utility. At least the way I build him. The more damaging you build him, the more careful you have to be in terms of positioning which is one of the major points of skill on morde as he is pretty simple mechanically.
I used to play morde and i stopped and then people near played him after worlds. Not sure if he got nerved but before all i would say is talk ignite and let for a guaranteed kill after u q.
Max E->Q->W but get W at level two to push the lane hard.
Try to poke your enemy laner as much as you can. If they're at about 40% hp try killing them with either a combination of Q3 R and ignite.
Get a Sterak's gage after your Rylais for the mid game tankiness.
Solo lane Morde:
12/0/18 masteries with Grasp of the Undying. Magic pen marks, flat armor seals, scaling magic resist glyphs, flat armor quints. E, W, E, Q, max E, max Q, max W.
adjusting the order of the last three items based on who's fed on the enemy team. Swap in Rageblade for Gunblade if you are snowballing. Swap in Ninja Tabi for Merc Treads if you don't need the MR or tenacity.
Start boots + 4 potions or cloth + 4 potions so you can spam your skills early. The secret to success is making sure to use your second cast of W on an enemy champion to keep your health up. Try to land your E on the enemy and the minion wave whenever possible for dat shield. After you finish your Rylai's, you have immense kill pressure whenever your ult is up. I recommend taking Ignite over Teleport, since you are a lane bully with high kill pressure, but teleport will also get you the occasional dragon ghost. Avoid burning your flash aggressively in lane, it is your only escape.
Jungle Morde:
12/0/18 masteries with Strength of the Ages. Flat AD marks, scaling armor seals, flat CDR glyphs, movespeed quints. W, Q, E, max Q, max W, max E.
skipping trinity force and adding your favorite armor item if you can't get the gold. Get your tier 2 boots before enchanting your machete if you want to gank a lot.
ALWAYS start hunter's talisman even though you don't need the mana regen, your significant AoE means talisman gives more sustain. Starting at krugs is preferred, but you can start any camp you want and get away with it. Your sustain and clear speed is so fantastic that you will have plenty of time to counterjungle (but only if the enemy jungler has no mobility) or gank often. Make sure that you only pick Morde if every one of your laners has decent CC, or the enemy will run out of lane before you can even get off one Q. You can solo dragon if you have your cinderhulk or even if you just have upgraded machete, double buffs, and a couple of health potions. Take dragon whenever you can after getting your ult, run down to bot lane with it, and pick up a free turret with the immense pushing power it gives.
Duo lane Morde:
12/0/18 masteries with Grasp of the Undying. Magic pen marks, flat armor seals, scaling magic resist glyphs, flat armor quints. W, E, Q, max W, max Q, max E. Max Q first if your support is putting in work. Max E first if you got countered by one of these escape artists
and you have no hope of killing them without a gank. Summs are all over the place for bot lane, I like Heal + Flash, but you can take any summoner but cleanse or barrier and magically get it to work.
getting rageblade right after ninja tabi if you are snowballing.
Pick Morde with aggressive, high CC supports. Personal favorites include
and the pocket
. Another ideal time to pick Morde Bot is when you have sustained ranged damage for taking turrets in another lane (Quinn top, Kindred jungle, etc). I like to get Targon's since it gets your support fed, but feel free to upgrade it to Face of the Mountain or leave it at Relic shield. Your snowball potential is second only to Draven, so beg for ganks and try hard for first blood. Try playing Suppordekaiser at least once, and then hate your life and never try it again.
CSing is a pain, so here's the drawn out method I like to use. Wait for all of your and your support's cooldowns to be up. Position yourself between the enemy melee and caster minions. If your support is a tank, have them stand next to you, otherwise they should stay in your minion wave or a bush. Activate your W and auto the wave. If the enemy ADC autos you even once, run up to them as the animation for their second auto plays and hit them with E, then go back to the wave. All this time, your support should be getting free harass down or healing/buffing you so you come out of the trade no worse for wear. If the enemy is ever foolish enough to get in range of your Q, all-in them with your support. This method will destroy ADCs who can't clear waves, like Vayne and Jhin. If you are out of wards and can't push the wave, last hit with your E and wait for the wave to bounce back.
Dont.
Lately I've been maxing R>W>Q>E Taking E level 1, W level 2, and Q level 3 and have had quite a bit of success.
