Garen broken?

So i played a game against garen as riven and i know garen counters riven hard but out of the 250+ games I've played as riven I've lost 1v1 to a garen maybe twice. Believe me or not but garens an easy matchup but i had a problem with the length of his silence. Since i saw his silence getting nerfed i thought it would be even easier. I was wrong. I easily won trades early levels but as soon as garen hit lvl 4 and q e me, i went from full health to 30% health. Of course, i lost lane hard and when garen was about 4/3 and i was 3/4, he would dive me straight under the tower with only a phage and some health and basically 1 shotted me with his e and finished with r and he only took like at most 300 dmg from tower, minions, and my attacks. Also before he got just a bit fed, he would 2v1 me as riven and scarner easily with q e r, his e chunking our healths from around full to like 40-30% health. Just wondering how would you counter garen?

He is easier kite post rework since they nerfed his silence, his movement speed buff, and removed the 30% tenacity on his w active. Just get used to the fact that you have to respect him now and cant just outdamage him while sitting in his spin when he catches you in melee range. Yes, he deals a lot more damage. Riot also made it easier for you to kite him, maybe play around that.

Unless the game is 1v1 and both players are exactly equal in skill. There is really no "counter." Some champions have advantages over others but overall it is still going to come down how the game plays out and each player's skill level.

Oh wait you play Riven lol. She has no counter :)

Gnar, Jarvan IV, Kennen and Yasuo are pretty hard matchup to an equal level of player skill. Tested and played a lot those matchup myself.

There is probably other matchup I don't know.

I think she has rough time against Pantheon and Renekton even from Poor Panth or Renek player vs a good Riven.

They nerfed his scaling on his e, his main source of damage. They took away tenacity, they nerfed his silence duration and they nerfed his move speed duration. The nerfed his armor stacking bonus which helped when laning against riven. If you were okay against him before and had a bad game, its probably a better garen player than you are used to, or you had an off game. I love garen, my most played champ, but he is weaker than before.

Weaker... from a Garen main...

oh well, suddenly there is a ton of Garen main, he is more played than 1 week ago, and he passed from 50 to 56% winrate (Bronze to Diamond). I really don't see where he is ''weaker than before''.

I have always been a Garen player. My favorite champ. I won't deny that he does more damage late game than before. But before he was completely ignoreable late game and now he is not. He still is weaker than other bruiser types late game but I think the increase in win rate is likely due to an increase in skilled players giving him another shot and the fact that squishies are still ignoring him. If you ignored pantheon then he would get some kills in too. But all you have to do is read the changes log to see that he gets lots of nerfs to make up for it. If you can't see it then you didn't even read the changes. I listed them above in the comment you replied to.

I will list the pro's so you see I am not oblivious despite being biased. His e at rank 5 and level 16 now gets a 3.8 scaling instead of a 3.3 scaling for a full duration. It's 50 extra damage for every 100 AD built so you are going to sacrifice some tankiness to get a lot out of it. But the real advantage to it that I see is that his E combined with black cleaver stacks earlier into it. before it was 6 ticks with higher scaling. it has lower scaling now but more ticks( only at higher levels). So you can hit more ticks even after BC is max stacked. That helps with getting more damage out of the E. On the specific villain target, you can get 1 percent max health damage per tick and off melee attacks. He isn't getting built for AS anywhere i have seen and it wouldn't make much sense. so you are probably getting 1 off the q and 10 off the e stacks and another for a hit when e is done so 12 percent max health damage as true damage for a full combo. Off a champ with 2k hps you are looking at 240 extra damage there. You get a 33 percent increase on the E if you are in a fight and its just one enemy. If you are for some reason late game not team fighting and running around solo looking for someone on the other team running around solo for some reason, you get more damage there.

All that stuff is extra damage compared to before, the problem is that it is late game damage and besides the extra scaling on the e, its all situational. It would have been an okay buff to Garen, who let's face it, isn't getting picked in pro level games. But it wasn't worth the early nerfs. I think the equipment changes actually would have been enough of a buff to make me happy.
