To those complaining about diversity

Tell me one time where more than 50% of the champion pool was chosen in worlds after season 2.

Yeah, it's not about how "nobody is picking all of these champs." It's more about "these are the best in their class. we have to pick them to avoid being put at a disadvantage."

Riven use to work mid and jungle in certain comps vs certain enemies. Now she is only a top laner. Shyvana use to go top as well as jungle, now only jungle. Lulu, Kennen, TF. The list goes on.

WoonStruck1 votes

Lulu got nerfed out of solo lane for very, very, very good reason.

Knoyle1 votes

for being annoying? and yet... Yasuo Camille Lux Syndra Zac

WoonStruck1 votes

It wasn't for being annoying lol.

While some of these are ok, cancers like ekko that isnt AP, on hit tanky fizz, tank - - - insert assassin or melee carry here - - - should have never existed and ruin the balance of the game.

zed is shit if there's not a jhin in the game etc.

He's actually pretty ridiculous since the Lethality change.

I don't care about diversity in pro play. What i care about is how riot steadily removes versatility from champions to pigeonhole them into predetermined roles or team compositions. Like tahm kench out of the jungle and top lane, ekko forced mid, fizz can't build on-hit anymore, zed is shit if there's not a jhin in the game etc.

I agree with that.

Like they nerfed relic shield to prevent bruisers from playing support.

deadlychuck1 votes

So what you're saying is... inc item 3303 nerfs? Brand Malzahar Lux

Revali1 votes

Ekko can still function as a very off-tank toplaner with some build like item 3027 item 3742 item 3065 item 3100 etc.

It's one thing to go full tank, its another to go what they can do but isn't recommended, in Ekko's case, fighter/bruiser-esque

not full on tank.

I don't think riot minds versatility as long as it isn't stupid, such as things like tank ekko, fizz, Yi, fiora.

maybe i'm dumb though.

Its like some people thought that 10 bans would mean every game would be 10 different champions and that was never going to happen. There was always going to be a meta. I thought it was obvious that 10 bans just meant that the meta was going to be a bit bigger (which it is), but some people are posting like they actually expected to see things like Teemo MasterYi Karthus MonkeyKing to be contested picks which is just mind blowingly stupid

Arya Riven4 votes

Teemo is always a contested pick. In hell.

winteriscoming975 votes

They should do a reverse-rotation that bans the top percentage characters every month. That way people will be forced to play the ignored champs.

Sarcasm*

Arya Riven2 votes

I know it was sarcasm, but many champions are ignored because they are ugly, boring or wonky to play. Regardless of their power.

winteriscoming971 votes

Maybe we should take summoner's rift and PUSH it somewhere else

Golden Tager X4 votes

Ugly is literally never a reason, Pudge in dota, the most popular hero is so ugly he makes urgot look good.

xevi1 votes

why did i search up pudge

Arya Riven1 votes

That is ignorance to assume so. Companies wouldn't try to sell us hot female skins constantly if they didn't have more likelihood to make money. Is it moral? Eh. Is it human? Yes.

Golden Tager X1 votes

I am just saying that looking grotesque is not a reason that people don't play a champ, in fact, certain people think things that look like that are cool.

Arya Riven1 votes

Yes but they are still a minority. For example, I think Trundle is really cool. But more people in general are going to like Lucian or Nidalee than Trundle visually and in terms of character. I know me liking Trundle more than them is not the standard, which also is cool because it makes me 'unique'. Still yes, plenty of people would still prefer Ahri over Urgot even if their kits were switched. Because for all the people who hate Ahri for being 'slutty', or just prefer a cool gross monster. There are a lot more who don't fantasize about rotting flesh sexually, as a self fantasy or just want to look at it. And would prefer a hot seductress. I am not a fan of Ahri myself, but it is for gameplay reasons, so hopefully the Ahri main fanclub don't eat me alive.

Arya Riven1 votes

A one off example is not the standard. Far from it.

ModCaptainMårvelous1 votes

That's a poor example. You're not at all accounting for the kits of these characters: Pudge is a hook-slinging scaling behemoth who can pin down and fuck up targets late game. Comparatively, Mirana is more supportive and is more about enhancing her team rather than pulling off DANK PLAYZ.

For a league comparison: Yasuo will see more play than Maokai despite Maokai being better simply because of Yasuo's flashy kit.

Golden Tager X1 votes

Pudge late game, lol, he is an early to mid game monster, and Mirana can do some "DANK PLAYZ" if you know what you are doing with her. (landing an arrow or making a stealth engage is always a very satisfying feeling) Pudge feels like he looks, and people love that about him.

ModCaptainMårvelous1 votes

It has nothing to do with looks however.

Mirana's arrow lands and there's no "oomph" to it. Sure, you get a big ass stun, but there's nothing special attached to it. Pudge lands a hook, you get that wet sound of metal hitting meat before he drags a flailing someone/something right into his face. There is a stark comparison between which feels "better" to hit and which has a more obvious, direct, noticeable impact.

I'm not saying MIrana is useless (Last I recall she's one of the most highly picked characters because team stealth) but her impact doesn't feel as instant, gratifying or as "powerful" as Pudge. And that earnestly has nothing to do with hooks. As another example: Blitzcrank is a giant metal golem and he still feels great because giant hook characters are amazing. Roadhog gets to hear that "W-woah no" sound from other characters before pulling them into the muzzle of his gun. It's zero to do with aesthetics, 100% to do with game feel.

deadlychuck1 votes

I think it's more accurate to say that there is nothing which the popular champions lack an answer too. Almost all onus of losing is placed on them to misplay and waste an answer they needed or eat enough tower shots they could feed an orphan in Africa for life.

Basically they're popular, because they're easy.

Big Lincoln3 votes

how come league is the only game that can't get it right

The Scout Girl5 votes

because it has 135 widely different champions and no , if you ever play mmos plenty of classes are invalid for long periods of time .

doiminat0r36003 votes

Because riot has been listening to the community.

Remember when everyone complained about Veigar just because he got played professionally?? They nerfed him. Remember when everyone started to complain about how they hated the tank meta because it wasn't fast enough? Now games are shorter and people are still complaining because it's too short.

The point is, people complain, riot listens and changes things. Now we are sitting here in this mess wondering what to do and complaining about how we have 10% of the champions pool picked all because people complain and riot changes based on those complaints.

deadlychuck1 votes

I just want to know who the fuck are these community members which are demanding all of these things?

Just about every change they've made has been against my personal opinion for probably the past 5 years. They're constantly being given shit about things like power and mobility creep, but still do nothing about it. It's taken them how long to actually start addressing champions like lee sin and yasuo? Who have managed to retain extremely high play and win rates in general play for how long now?

I don't think riot listens to the complains, rather i think they base decisions off of the numbers and data which we don't have access. They increase the game speed, because they found, based on data sets, that faster games got more attention. They nerf champions X, Y, & Z, because they find correlation between them and some aspect of the game which they're focusing on at the time.

Obviously they have some biases which prevent certain changes from happening, but I think it's fair to say that the design team isn't making changes to make them game more "fun" anymore, instead they've started making changes based on what the marketing department says will benefit the game's success.

Remember the quote from the blizzcon "you think you do, but you don't". That's how it manifests into community interactions. You say that you want us to reduce all damage by 30%, but if you take a look at the graph of number of games played against the average damage output, you find that the higher the damage is, the more games which are being played.

They just keep overstepping how far they can ride those kind of correlations, and then never reverting the changes despite calling into question the reliability of the original correlation.

doiminat0r36001 votes

In order to change a meta, it doesent happen in a single patch. People demand things now and they will be the exact opposite in a season or 2.

Season 5 people complained about tanks and now theyre not even a problem there is so much damage. People complained about damage after the assassin meta in season 4, so the tank meta was born in season 5. People felt ADC were too fragile and useless so season 6 was about ADC. People then felt that mages were too useless so then the MYMU came out.

It's all about time. It takes time to get things accomplished.

You have never played other videogames have you? Whether it is racing games with plenty of worthless cars, shooters with crappy guns that just have better options, fighting games where some characters are not good picks at all, MMORPGs where some classes never have been and never will be viable. This is common in gaming. Riot isn't doing particularly worse than any other company considering their cast is what? somewhere around 140 champs? I haven't counted recently.

The Scout Girl3 votes

there are too many champs for 100% of them to ever see the light of day , the reason diversity by % went down is because the total number went up .

doiminat0r36005 votes

And because riot is trying to make more niche champions instead of general champions like they used to. Now those general champions are doing everything but the niche champions are doing one of those things slightly better so it's not worth choosing them.

For it to change Riot would have to forsake their casual playerbase. Which will make a better game overall....buuuuuuuut at the same time cause many players to depart. Hell, we already see a predominantly lower-skilled playerbase complaining about how the game "Is too snowbally" when it's more punishing to mistakes.

Despite the balance problems, there is definitely a reason League is king of the market and so far ahead of other games in terms of $$$ income and sheer playerbase size.

WoonStruck3 votes

Season 3 and on killed diversity.

Riot nerfed everything that was even slightly viable if it didn't fit their mental picture of what the meta should look like.

This game's diversity is dead because of it, and it will NEVER improve.

deadlychuck1 votes

At least not until they stop strong arming out all of the builds which don't fit the exact optimal builds for the champions.

WoonStruck1 votes

Not even that. Riot killed roaming supports, something that's been balanced in other MOBAs.

Riot killed counter-picks. Now just the strongest at doing X thing is viable.

Riot killed supports in solo lane. Something that's been balanced in other MOBAs.

Riot killed uneven lanes. Something that's been balanced in other MOBAs.

Riot killed ranged vs melee dynamics because they felt it was unfair that ranged could be punished if melee got to them. Now melee has to be absurdly OP in order to compete.

Riot killed the jungle; now only one of two things determines jungle meta at a time: clear speed or ganking; there used to be like 8 different important factors that gave significant negatives and positives to each jungle pick.

Riot killed the game pacing. Now only champions with strong early-mid games are reliably effective.

Arya Riven2 votes

In the past generalists were extremely powerful, many champions were just generally good. My champ Riven saw a lot of play because she was generally decent at a number of things. But in modern competitive play with like... 140 champs available, it is far too easy to find one who fills the niche you are looking for better than a generalist would, and use your teammates to cover their weaknesses.

Thus why Riven was only seen a little in S5, hardly in S6 and so far not at all in S7.

As all the niche champions are nerfed, we might see some generalists again. Until then it is all about designer comps.

Xeruon1 votes

Ah, I remember when Rib-eye steak was the single most hated champion in season 5. Well, until she ate the nerfbat that is. Good times. Good times, indeed.

And about the generalist argument; the only actual generalist that's still good and has consistently been good is Ahri, sporting a winrate that never dipped below 50% with a decent play rate for 2 seasons in a row now, and is still going strong. But other than that, generalist picks have generally just fallen off the face of SR.

When I hear 'diversity', all I get is that we want to include every champion in League except the straight white male champions: it's more 'inclusive' this way.
