Why does yasuo have a crit passive?

TheDangerousTaco··4 votes·1,177 views

This is a serious question for riot, Not for the troll yas mains on the board that will answer with stupid stuff like ( "oh he needs crit to be viable ) , ( "yas is not op, without crit, he will be forced to go tank ).

Lets be honest here. whenever someone talks about nerfing yas, no one ever mentions the obvious fact that his real power relays on his passive. For that reason riot has been lowering his base stats ever since to compensate . I say you don't need to do that, just get rid of his passive. I know a lot of people care about champion identity, but there is only so far you can jusitify unbalanced mechanics.

Crits are such a polarizing stat. You have a random chance. a "Random" chance, to do double damage. That by itself makes it hard to balance, but when you have champions that abuse that mechanic, they are oppressive to deal with. Yasuo Tryndamere . Even the recent rengar despite how bad they gutted the rest of his kit feels oppressive to deal with because of his free crit after he ults.

When champions do get 100% crit chance though, they have some compensation for it however Fiora Ashe . So they don't do the Flat 200% damage in early game. ( fiora is a different issue all together, so lets not get into that ).

But why does a champion who relies on crits, only needs to build 2items item 3031 item 3046 to do 100% more damage than someone who builds the same? MasterYi Jinx Tristana Vayne . Even people in bronze will find yi less op than yasuo.

I understand that yasuo takes skills to play, so that makes not look as over powered. I get that. But from a design point of view, I would argue that any champion that abuses a core mechanic in the game, will always be over tuned or unbalanced. Evelynn Yasuo Anivia Riven Camille Kalista Akali Soraka Nasus I'm talking about

  • mobility
  • vision
  • auto attacks
  • death cycles.
  • tankiness
  • health Champions who abuse these things, that are basic features of the game that everyone else relies on, always seems over the top, so riot is forced to nerf there kits into the ground until they become unplayable. This is not me spouting nonsense, we see it with new champions all the time ( kalista is the main offender here ). We all knew having non stop kiting passive would be a bad idea, instead riot decided to nerf everything about her kit that was not the problem, until now she wont even come out into the sunlight. (Probably why her skin so pale).

So my question to riot is, does yasuo really need a crit passive? Is there no other way to design around him, ( like hp buffs, higher Q damage, ult time decrease w/e )? Cause I am all for champions being unique and all, like soraka's healing for example. But at one point do you say, (" maybe her healing is not the most healthy mechanic for the game ")

Because it forces him to build at least two crit items, which purposely limits his effective build options.

Yasuo is designed to be a high damage melee carry, and usually has the weakness of being squishy as a result with his low base stats. This allows him to die if he's caught, but with his mobility catching him is difficult.

Yasuo functioning without crit was a problem revealed with Frozen Force Yasuo. A build that not only made him near impossible to escape from, but also nullified his weakness of being squishy. You couldn't catch him out to blow him up, but he could still avoid damage with his mobility. It made him have no weakness beyond losing a little burst, but since Yasuo can work with sustained damage just fine it hardly mattered.

Yasuo's current kit is designed to function on a high damage and low durability build. That's why he has double crit.

"But why not just remove the double crit and force him to build more crit?"

Because frankly that would screw him over. His ult only allows armor pen on crit to enforce him to build his 100% crit since it used to just give him armor pen. Removing double crit would mean he'd have to build a lot of crit items to function, which would also make him pretty weak until late and practically not a threat late because of how easily he'd die since he needs to fight in melee.

That and I'm not interested in seeing him build I.E., shiv, and PD. It would also only get him to 80% crit since he can't really work with RFC, ER, and hurricane.

Marshbouy1 votes

You forgot that if he didn't have the double crit passive then he would be more likely to build bruiser since he wouldn't be able to cash in on double crit. A tanky mobile knockup bot is not something many people want in their game.

TheDangerousTaco1 votes

Again, riot can balance around this. People are saying that without this option he would build something else. that is obvious. But if this is really a problem, wouldn't champs like riven also face the same scrutiny? Camille Hecarim Riven Are these not also mobile champs that have knockups.

I understand what your saying, that yasuo has a lot going for him in his kit, not just his crits. But that is my point, with all that he has in his kit, there is nothing stopping yas from building bruiser anyway? So what changes? Yas can still be a mobile tanky knockup anytime he wants. People don't do it, because they crits are a lot more powerful

TheDangerousTaco1 votes

Not to start an argument, but you have to help me understand something here. What you are saying sounds really circumstantial. Cant yasuo still build frozen mallet?? and isn't that a problem with the item rather than the champion. I understand yas has mobility, but isnt that part of his kit enough? I don't think having crit limits him to one build path, yas can still build whatever he wants, but most yas mains know that crit is his strongest item set, cause it gives him a power spike like no other.

If removing crit scews him over, then what is his mobility for? what is his windwall for? I am not saying you are wrong, but you have to remember the original part of my post was not saying that his CRIT was overpowered, but stating the fact that if riot really wanted too, you could balance around a new mechanic. There is nothing in the math, or in design, that states yas can't be viable if buff his other stats without crit. There is nothing that states that he 100% needs crits to function. in fact, if they wanted too, they could softcap him like they did before, making his crits do slighty less damage ( cause I feel 90% of the total is not enough ).

There are a lot of things in his kit that makes him a good champion. His ult, mobility, wind wall, passive shield. But what is really stopping riot from removing his crit passive. Is that a mechanic that he 100% needs? or is it something that people are soo used to seeing, they cant imagine him any other way.

Put it like this, would you rather have a very hyper mobile fighter who is incredibly durable with decent damage, or a high damage high mobility fighter that dies quickly if you he gets caught out.

Riot wants to balance Yasuo around being a squishy high damage champion. So it's not a matter of "can they balance him around no crit?" But rather that they simply do not want to shift him from his intended design and playstyle.

If they wanted that, they would have favored Frozen Force Yasuo. They did not.

And yes, he can still build Mallet, but it's not like before when he'd just build triforce, mallet, and then pretty much full tank. Now at least 2 items are crit based, then boots, which gives him only three items to experiment with.

You ask me the question as if there is a choice. Like I said in previous post, Yas can do that anyway. If he wants to go tanky, he can. So giving the incentive to go crit, doesn't take away from his unbalanced kit regardless. So why is it there. And to answer your question, I will take the mobile fighter that is slightly durable and does decent damage. I don't think bruiser yasuo is hard to deal with, But if that was REALLY the best option for him, people would go that route. Everyone knows, if you kill your opponent in 2hits, you don't need tanks. What use is defense if everyone dies anyway? So yea, I would prefer a more tanky yas that did less damage, instead of a yas that can 2shot anyone. And again, I must keep stating this. I don't think yas is overpowered, I think his crit is a unnecessary mechanic for his kit, so I question ( was mostly intended for riot ) why do they keep it if he has so much in his kit already.

I cant agree with the logic, that the way to balance a champion from being overpowered... is to make him stronger??? I don't get that logic. If they take away his crit and he goes bruiser, that's fine. Honeslty I think removing anything from someone will make them weaker regardless, so I don't get why people saying he will become more cancerous to play against.

Ralanr1 votes

It's not slot efficient for him to go bruiser now is what I'm saying.

And no, his bruiser build wasn't fine because he lacked a weakness with it.

TheDangerousTaco1 votes

There are many bruiser builds in this game with champions that need to fill niche roles. And there are fighters who also build crit without loosing a lot in it. If you riot decides to remove yas's double crit mechanic, I'm sure the designers can look to buff him in other areas to compensate for this. I don't think yas is overpowered, but the one thing in his kit that gives him crazy power is that crit mechanic. I explain in may different post in this topic why I think that mechanic has too much power. So I will say my argument for the last time cuase no one seems to see my point.

I do not think, with yas's kit, of high mobility, aoe ult, windwall for adcs, and a passive shield, that he needs a crit passive to be viable. You can give his tornado back its 10secs, you can give his ult back its armor pen, you can incrase the cd for his minion cast time with E. You can do a lot of things to make his kit function a lot better and less oppressive to play against.

But I do not see any sufficient value in having a double crit chance with his passive. And I say the same for trynadmere but trynadamere I am a lot more lenient with because he doesn't have half the skill potential that yasuo has. For all the mechanics in yasuo's kit. His windwall, his shield barrier ( which they can EASILY buff ), his cc, his high mobility, does crit really need to be inside his kit? Or is it something that people just refuse to admit, makes him more strong than intended

Ralanr1 votes

No, Yasuo doesn't need his double crit to be viable. That's not what's making him viable, that is what is keeping his current kit in check.

Do you really think a highly mobile bruiser is better for the game than current Yasuo? What exactly would be his weakness then?

You complain that Crit is random, and you complain about Yasuo abusing Crits and making that even more of a problem. But in fact, Yasuo double Crit passive make Crit LESS random, so it doesn't amplify the problem, it reduces it.

For the rest, Ralanr answer is already perfect.

TheDangerousTaco1 votes

What.. what?? what???? you just confused me so hard... Umm you realize that other champions build crit too right? its not just yas. How is him having guaranteed crit compared to the other people having random crit, reducing the problem?? I just don't understand your logic

From what I understand, his passive lets him deal 90% damage from crits, instead of the 100% damage. Lets run a simple math equation Assuming yas and adc had infinite health ( just go with me on this one ) and same items item 3031 item 3046 . and same ad ( assume 100 to make things easier ) we can find out how much damage they will do over a course of 10 auto attacks .)

Assuming the adc's 50% is true, he will deal

1 auto attack - 200 2 aa - 100 3 aa - 200 4 aa - 100 5 aa - 200 6 aa - 100 7 aa - 200 8 aa - 100 9 aa - 200 10 aa - 100

For a total off 1500 damage. Now lets apply the same math for yasuo

Yasuo = 10 aa x 190 So yasuo is doing 1900 damage, a total of 400 more than the adc. Bets lets also assume that adc doesn't have a 50% gaurenteed auto, instead, a random chance at sometimes getting a crit. Then the adc is doing anywhere from 1000-2000 damage. That range of error compard to yas constant 1900 doesn't seem fair to me in one bit. In fact its why I'm against champions that have higher crit chance multipliers, casue you cannot out damage them. This is not me complaining, its me stating that crit is a very hard thing to balance, since it relies on random chance. When you remove that random chance, anyone that doesn't have the same constituency you have will fall behind. Its like winning the lotto ever 3 tickets. No matter how lil you get paid from it, you can cheat the system once you know for a fact that its going to happen everytime. In addition to this, adcs have to scarfice damage to increase there crit chance, as for yasou he can just get life steal or bruiser items.

DeathBurst1 votes

n fact its why I'm against champions that have higher crit chance multipliers, casue you cannot out damage them. This is not me complaining, its me stating that crit is a very hard thing to balance, since it relies on random chance.

But it DOES NOT rely on random chance. By your own calculation, Yasuo output a constant 1900 damage. Nothing random in that. You contradict yourself. If you think Crit being Random is a bad thing, you should want MORE champions like Yasuo where it's not Random.

And yes, no one can out-damage a Yasuo. But he's also melee. By the time he reaches an ADC, the ADC should have already fired 3 attacks, before Yasuo can even touch him. So you're right, no one can out-damage a Yasuo, but that's not the whole picture.

TheDangerousTaco1 votes

I am not contradicting myself your just not understand what I am saying. A mechanic that is "INTENDED" to be random, become unrandom, is unbalanced, why don't you understand that?? If everyone could do it, it wouldn't be an issue, but if one person has to roll the dice and the other player has it loaded, how is that fair?? That's not even reasonable in design language. No designer can justify that logic. I am saying this

Crits are hard to balane because they are random damage increase's. When a champion has 100% crit, They do far less damage to compensate Ashe Fiora When a champion doesn't have that huge deficit to there damage. They are usually considered oppressive to deal with, or op. Tryndamere Yasuo Rengar. Taking a mechanic that is supposed to be random, and removing the % chance of that randomness without the sufficient numbers to counter balance it, is a bad design.

TheDangerousTaco1 votes

On top of that to even add more to what I was saying earlier. Champions that have 100% crtical strikes without damage compensation cannot do it every auto attack, except 2 champions Tryndamere Yasuo. And they are agreeably one of the most cancerous champions to face late game. The only reason tryn is not getting banned 100% is because he cannot fly across the screen in 3secs with 2 minions. For all that yas has in his kit, having a double crit chance seems unreasonable

DeathBurst1 votes

The "sufficient numbers to counter balance it" are the 200 range Yasuo has compared to an ADC 500+ range.

One of the major arguments I see about why yas needs his crit passive is " Without it, he will build other stuff". I think that argument is flawed, and keep in mind , my post is a question not a complaint.

But here is why I don't think that argument is valid. Saying that yas will build other things instead of crit if your remove his crit passive is like saying "If you get rid of drug dealers, people will buy drugs from the pharmancy instead" . . I mean isn't that better? I know you cant fix the drug problem in a lot of countries by removing the dealers, but should you really allow an evil to exist just because you find it hopeless to fight. If anything people who buy drugs from pharmacies can be better tracked, they can be helped by people in power too hopefully steer them away from there addiction. If they buy it from dealers instead, your just giving up entirely and leaving them to there own doom.

This is the same argument I would like to make for yas crit kit. There is nothing stopping yas from building bruiser anyway, he can do that anytime in the game, right now, as it stands. patch 7.12 , june 16,2017. But if is kit is going to be flawed regardless, wouldn't it be better if riot balanced around him not having a crit, instead of having one? If riot balances his kit around the idea that he has a double crit chance, they will probably put him into a direction that guts him too greatly to be viable. ( similar to what they did with kalista and Camille ). but I agrue that if his kit is already hard to balance, why add more fuel into the fire with his crit chance? Is there no other way they can truly remove his passive and keep him fair to play agasint and fun to play as?

I understand yas has a lot going for him, but saying that he will build something else, instead of the OBVIOUSLY superior build, is a flawed logic in my opinion. Bruiser yas is not as strong as crit yas. This is why no one goes bruiser yasuo. So I don't see how he would be worse to deal with

DeathBurst2 votes

Yasuo is intended to be a high damage / low durability champ, and is supposed to compensate is melee range by his mobility/windwall.

If you remove his Crit passive, his best build path will become a bruiser, HP-heavy build without Crit at all. Indeed, since he is melee, he can't afford to go for a full Crit build like an ADC, he needs at least some amount of defenses, even if he still remains squishy, he can't be AS squishy as an ADC.

So either you give him a Crit passive to make a Crit build the most efficient build, or you don't give him a Crit passive and he won't build Crit at all. First one is obviously the current situation, so let's talk about what would happen in the second one.

Yasuo doesn't get Free Crits. He builds stuff like Triforce, Sterak, Frozen Mallet, maybe a few Lethality items once in a while. What do you get? Some kind of unkillable super-Juggernaut that you cannot kite due to his mobility/Mallet, that you cannot burst because he has plenty of HP, and that has wonderful team utility with his Windwall (he doesn't need to keep it up to defend himself, now). THAT'S EVEN LESS FUN TO PLAY AGAINST THAN FREE CRIT YASUO.

TheDangerousTaco1 votes

What you are saying is wrong simple due to the fact that. IF... IF he was truly the unkillable god you claim that he would be... why ...is....no...one... doing it??? Honeslty if that situation is true, people would be stupid to go crit yas, why not build triforce mallet and face roll everything. That sounds like its way more oppressive?? well if that was true, wouldn't be people be doing it?

Are you telling me all of league of legends yasuo mains are ingoring this wonderfully overpower build due to compassion and sensibility? No, people are not that boosted, if that build was as dominant as you said it was, people would be still using it. But riot since nerfed frozen mallet to make sure that wouldn't happen. Nerfing a superior build path doesn't make the inferior build path somehow better. Everyone is not bronze that somehow ignored this op build until now. So I cant agree with what your saying.

Tank yas is not more oppressive than crit yas. If it was truly as dominant as you claim it to be, why doesn't anyone still go it? even though they can??

Ralanr5 votes

Because they nerfed it so his ult requires crit chance to get the bonus armor pen. Meaning he has to build crit.

I feel like you're seeing us talk about theory. We are not. Frozen Force Yasuo was a thing that was waaay too powerful and got nerfed.

The reason no one is doing it anymore is because HE NEEDS CRIT TO FUNCTION FULLY NOW.

TheDangerousTaco1 votes

And in that same logic, they can remove crit, and remove that restriction. You keep saying what they did, but not what they can do. I'm saying they don't have the walk down that road, but your saying, there already down it so might as well keep going? That isn't how it works, Riot has always had design ideas that never fully worked out and they haven't been ashamed of admitting itt. So what stops them from doing it now? The reason I say these arguments are circumstantial is because ever agreement assumes that RIOT has to be a certain way. IT has to be crit, it has to mobility, but really it doesn't. Yas doesn't have to do anything. They choose this path, and I asking why? Why did you "@riot" choose to make a champ have double crit chance, when his kit is already flexible in many different ways. Maybe overloaded even. None of these arguments have ever ansawerd my question on WHY. All you keep stating is "that's just the way things are" which is not a sufficient answer for me

Ralanr1 votes

Considering Riot has a specific idea in mind when developing champions and on how to balance them, it's safe to assume that this is why Riot focuses on certain aspects of a champion and tends to nerf them when they get out of hand through other means.

Or am I just misinterpreting what you're trying to say right now? If so, please simplify it.

TheDangerousTaco1 votes

No, you just about nailed it. Certain champs are flawed from design is what I'm saying, but rather than nerfing there design, they beat around the bush until a problem cant be solved without tackling the core problem.

This happened when kalista was released. Her core problem was her passive, but riot refused to nerf until it was the last nerf, by that point, kalista was far too gone to be played competitive anymore.

Again happened with cammile. Her passive allowed her to trade people easily, on top of her healing. Instead of nerfing the one which was the hardest to deal with , they nerefed that, her ult, and even her Q damage.

I am not saying that my solution is best, what I am asking is why does riot tend to ignore the things that seem like the most obvious parts about a champions strengths. it will come to the point where you have to question wiether or not the mechanic in the game is really healthy for it. Lets take soraka for example. upon first realease her healing also healed mana as well, which was when she was peak of broken. Slowly after every season, I have been seeing soraka nerfs after soraka nerfs. And she still is considered strong in any competitive play. If riot wants to keep her identity, that's fine, but after what point do you say "maybe this kit just wont work in the game afterall", I think certain things are flawed about yasuo, but overall he is a pretty balance champion that takes a lot of skill to play.

The main thing I see that cant be balanced about him in my opinion is his passive. For that reason, I am questioning riot, does yas really need his passive to be... well.. yasuo? Can he still fufill his role as a fighter carry without having a double crit chance? Can he not having a stronger shield passive that aborbs flat damage rather than one ablity? can he not have higher base damage on some of his skills while reducing the scaling ( just ideas, don't quote me on it ). Is Crit yasuo truly the only way to play yasuo, or am I missing something here? Cause I know plenty of bruisers that are somewhat cancerous but less annoying to deal with than yasuo Irelia Riven Graves

Ralanr1 votes

Riot doesn't nerf design right away because they want to make the design work. If they can get it to work, then they've done their job. Nerfing design is supposed to be a last resort which leads to slight reworks. As we have seen with Rek'sai, Kindred, and Heimer to full VGU's like Sion, Poppy, and Galio.

Riot wants to make Yasuo a crit champion. His current design is balanced around being a crit champion. If they didn't want him to be a crit champion, they would not have made his ult require crit chance for armor pen as an answer to Frozen Force.

TheDangerousTaco1 votes

And now we get further into my question. If riot wants to make him a crit champion that's fine. But to be honest, I dont entirely believe it. Tryndamere is my idea of a crit champion. He wacks you with his stick until he dies. Yi is my idea of a crit champion, he runs you down until you die.

I understand that many champions have more than one purpose to them, and more than one design, but I felt as thought riot wanted to make a cool champion that could be fun to play, but decided to add crit as a last minute idea to give him decent power. Cause like you said earlier, they added crit to his ult to make him a crit champion. But that wasn't always the case. I dont think that ever was his orginal design. I could be wrong, as I have no idea, that's just my thoughts

Both of those however are old and frankly unhealthy designs because they do nothing else but damage.

You are wrong. Yasuo's crit wasn't a last minute thing, it's what's supposed to allow him to be a melee hypercarry. They only put the crit requirement on his ult later to stop an unintended and unhealthy playstyle from happening. They didn't put something like that earlier because they didn't expect something like that to happen.

DeathBurst3 votes

why ...is....no...one... doing it???

But they did! Frozen Mallet was the dominant build for Yasuo a couple patches ago, until it was nerfed to the ground because it was so frustrating to play against. And if you remove Crit interactions from Yasuo's kit, it will come back in force.

TheDangerousTaco1 votes

We are not talking about then, we are talking about now. You keep saying that it will happen again, how?

Ralanr1 votes

Because if you remove crit interaction, that includes removing the crit requirement on the bonus armor pen from his ult.

It's not hard to see where this leads.

DeathBurst3 votes

No we're not talking about now, we're talking about after you remove his Crit interaction. He still has it, for now.

And what else would be left for Yasuo if you remove his Crit interaction? He will be forced into the old Mallet build once again, and either he will be useless, or you'll have to buff him, but the inherent problems with this build still exist, and it will be frustrating as hell to play against.

TheDangerousTaco1 votes

If you remove his passive, you can give his Q a bonus crit damage multipler, which I would agrue is a lot safer since it still requires him to hit the skill ( it does have somewhat of a low cd ) and it still doesn't happen 100%. Yi has a crit multiplier on his Q. And I don't find yi overwhelming. Yi can still be a bruiser if he needs too, or he can go full crit. So saying that removing crit from yas will make him useless its quite the overstatement. If anything, I seem him going down the yi route. Strong, but not quite broken. Which I would argue is a lot better than his current state.

There are a lot of other designs riot can do for yasuo ( just naming a few off my head, not saying there good )

  • increase the base damage on his ult, but slight increase the cool down
  • give his Q 10/15/20/25/30/ increase crit damage.
  • give his E longer cooldown so he cant dash as much
  • Give his passive shield a absorbtion effect rather than a flat spell/auto block.

So I don't see him going exactly down the same direction. I think riot has good designers that know what there doing, so I dont see them being as linear with yasuos design as you make it sound.

And I'm not trying to be rude, but this is why I intended for this question to be answered by riot. Cause of a lot of times players are not designers, so they cant see all the flaws or pros that certain designs may entail. I am not a exception for this rule. I dont know if nerfing his crit is truly the best thing, or if it wont create more problems in the future. But a lot of the responses I see are usually one dimensional ( oh it happened before ) kind of answers. But does that mean it will happen again. Are there truly no other ways around it? Or are we being too linear with our thought process so we cant see all the different routes that riot can take this.

I am not saying I have the answers, but I haven't been satisfied with the answers with people have been giving me on WHY yas needs a crit passive. All the answers are circumstaianl based on the current meta, and peoples current play style, but I dont think those things have to bee the same

DeathBurst2 votes

Of course, Riot could make a full rework where Yasuo doesn't have a Crit passive anymore. But given his current archetype, his current intended strengths and weaknesses profile, he needs this Crit passive. You can't just remove the Crit passive and slap a slight change on another skill and make it work.

The Crit passive is integral with his current profile, you can NOT maintain this intended profile without the Crit passive. You can make a champion with a different profile and who's still interesting without the Crit passive. But you cannot make this profile healthy without the Crit passive.

So, once again, WHY Yas needs a Crit passive? To FORCE him to build Crit, and to make sure that he doesn't build too many defenses. If you force him to build Crit, every Crit item takes a slot where he cannot build defense, and you can make sure he remains relatively squishy.

This has been said already. You refused to listen. Maybe you disagree with the premises, maybe you think Yasuo should be allowed to build some defenses. But it's not MY premises, it's how the champion was designed. It's not about the current meta, it's how the champion was thought out from the ground up. If you disagree with the premises, you disagree with Riot, not with me. I'm just stating facts, here, not giving my opinion.
