I have this friend

This friend is pretty good. They usually win their lane fairly hard and get fed. Unfortunately, this friend thinks that they should split push as a mid AP after they get fed leaving the team to fend for themselves. Other times, they just get cocky and dive into a team only to die, throwing the game. How can I go about telling them what they're doing is seriously stupid and that they need to learn how to really abuse a lead instead of throwing it constantly in the nicest way possible without sounding like a jerk? Thanks for your help :D

Focus moreso on yourself and if your friend split pushes and grabs a lot of pressure, do something with it. It also matters what mid character they use. If it's a Kat or someone that does well with roaming, it might not be the worst idea! :)

It wouldn't if they got something done, but they either die, or they get a kill and immediately run away / back without pushing. More often, they just sit there trying to push while we get 5 manned mid and we can't do anything because all our kills are on them.

If my friend is not abusing their lead or throws the game i just tell it straight forward. Waste of time trying to sugar coat the truth because if they actually get offended by it then they will get offended by anything.

This is why I don't ever add anybody. I don't like confrontation, and now that I have someone I don't mind duoing with, I don't wanna piss them off...but they do this constantly, and it fails everytime. If you're the fed one killing everyone, we need you with us, not trying to kill a turret off in another lane on the other side of the map WITHOUT teleport while we're stuck here getting pushed and can't stop them because you have all the kills -_-. I'm pretty sure they don't read boards, so I'm safe here.

Could try telling him that the rest of the team is not as strong as him and that they need their ap carry to carry them in teamfights.

Also tell him if he wants to keep doing that split push strat he should pick up teleport because it would allow him to join the team fight when needed and he could make fights a 5v4 if they send someone without tp to stall his split push to make the fight even easier.

He also needs to know when it's a good time to split push and what lane. Like if baron is up he should be split pushing bot lane with his teleport ready and other basic things that you can tell him.

Say it would increase his chances of winning the game maybe that will work.
