New Official Riot Policy: NO REFUNDS FOR REDESIGNS

So I just dealt with support attempting to get a refund for the Totemic Maokai skin, because let's be honest the skin currently in the game looks about as much like the one I purchased as Michael Jackson looks like Michael Jordan. At first I wanted it changed in such a way that retained the original design, but it became pretty clear as I made my case on the forums that most of the community liked the new more than the old, and so I was overruled, accepted it, and went to support for a refund instead.

However, I was told by support that they have OFFICIALLY ADOPTED A POLICY TO REFUSE ALL REFUNDS FOR ANY AND ALL REDESIGNED CONTENT regardless of the circumstances, the actions of the development team, or the quality and aesthetics of the redesigned work in question.

We as a community need to stand up against this. What Riot has done here is ALLEVIATED THEMSELVES FROM ALL FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY toward you, me, and everyone who has previously supported the game over the last five years. Over 80% of the games characters are still on the table for visual upgrades. Who is to say the next champion they redesign won't have YOUR FAVORITE SKIN? What responsibility does Riot have to 'upgrade' that skin in such a way that it retains the attributes which caused you to purchase it in the first place? In most industries, it would be the threat of a refund. But as Riot has stolen our rights and only protection as consumers, I will tell you what responsibility they have, ABSOLUTELY NONE!

Though all five years of these and the old forums, and the (literally) billions of complaints which have cycled through this site, there has always been one thing the players could fall back on through any problems they had with any content. VOTE. WITH. YOUR. WALLET! If you don't like what Riot is doing, don't pay for it, don't pay for anything until the fix it. That basic right as a consumer has been silently stolen away, did anybody see an announcement over this change? No? Me neither, because Riot wants those suffering from this to do so individually and quietly, knowing that as a group we are loud and impactful enough to stand up against it and see it changed.

TLDR No refunds for any redesigned content, including redesigned skins. With over 80% of the games champions, and their skins, yet up for redesign; Riot has alleviated themselves of all fiscal responsibility towards all of that content towards any players who have previously purchased it. We need to stand against this as a community, protect ourselves from corporate irresponsibility, and see to it that Riot retain responsibility for their actions towards us their consumers.

Because I have little doubt Riot will deal with this in a mature manner, by deleting this post, this post can also be found on Reddit at: http://www.reddit.com/r/leagueoflegends/comments/2ovzwc/new_official_riot_policy_no_refunds_for_redesigns/ Also added to imgur: imgur.com/gallery/Dzw8Cqe/new

EDIT: Firstly, NOWHERE am I asking that Riot take a 'free refunds for everybody' policy, but a 'no refunds for anyone under any circumstances' policy is just as mistaken. This should be decided on a case by case basis that is most fair for everyone involved.

Secondly, WHY ON EARTH ARE PEOPLE ADDRESSING CHAMP REFUNDS!? Nowhere is that even addressed in my post, I have no problem with them refusing champ refunds, but skins are bought for ONE REASON and ONE ALONE, HOW THEY LOOK. And if that is taken away, nothing you bought is how you bought it, and there is no way a refund is not justified ON THE SKIN ALONE.

EDIT OF THE EDIT: Okay, apparently this WAS announced, in the most ambiguous and sleazy way possible, as an addendum to the karthus update rather than its own announcement. And anybody else read that and think it meant no refunds for CHAMPS? Possibly because THAT IS HOW IT IS WORDED! Or anybody not read it at all? I didn't, I don't bloody play karthus!

Originally they did refund you if you no longer liked the skin/champ after a rework, however people started abusing it just as a way to get RP, thus they dropped it. Anyway that Maokai skin redesign is amazing, how can you not love it?

Riot made this official announcement when they visually updated Karthus. That was months ago. Their stance wasn't actually a bad one either. As the game moves forwards people are going to stop playing champions, stop using skins and down the road when they rework something they have no reason to refund thousands of people who have realize they have 2 Karthus skins but haven't played Karthus in 3 years for those skins they bought back then. It takes up a lot of support's time and it makes no sense for them to refund you.

It's like buying anything and trying to return it years later. You got what you paid for. It wasn't something that was meant to last forever, and like most things it eventually changed over time. You still have the skin, you still have the product you paid for. If you had bought it in the last month or maybe the last 2 months it'd be understandable to ask for a refund. To complain that something old and in need of an update got updated because you spent $5 on something you used for years is just BS.

It would really hurt Riot as a company if instead of people buying RP to buy new stuff they just waited for one of their many reworks to refund stuff for champions they don't like so that they could change it out for something new.

You're not the only one that hates how the skin looks now.

I have the skin before the remodel, now that it looks stupid (and I hate "funny" looking skins), I've reverted to his classic skin, just because how bad it looks.

I love how digital products are required to have basically no consumer protection whatsoever. Things that would get people thrown in jail with physical products or services are all fair game when it comes to vidya.

Like all those abandoned kickstarters and early access games.

It's that way so they don't lose all their money with the constant rework fuckups happening lately. What they end up doing is making people hesitant to buy something that could suddenly look like a Runescape character circa 2003, with a kit that some guy came up with whilst sitting on the toilet the morning before work. The Cass rework solidified this for me, no longer buying RP and encouraging everyone I know to do the same, it's just unacceptable, whether it's in the EULA or not, it's pure bullshit.

Riot just cares about money

I'm with you on that skin. It's so incredibly ugly. I literally cannot comprehend why anyone thinks that's a good skin. There's nothing I like about it, and it really lost the totemic theme too. It sucks for people who bought the skin before, as well as people who might buy it in the future because it's no longer anything like the splash.

ImHerVoice12/10/2014, 7:51:48 PM9 votes

If its not gaining them money, why should they care.

Sad truth.

The first champion remake they did this "policy" on was Grim Reaper Karthus, and I loved the old skin, and couldn't care less about the new one. It's really freaking annoying and I agree completely with OP, although when I first made my case on the forums and through support, I was much more pissed off about it. I still am... it's bullshit, this is the same as ordering a Big Mac, getting a fish sandwhich instead, and not being able to do anything about it, because, "hey, you paid for a sandwhich, no refunds if you don't like it after the fact."

Legostrike12/10/2014, 7:45:06 PM8 votes

Riot needs to respond to this now. We also need to make more boards on this.

Krom12/10/2014, 11:42:17 PM8 votes

Sorry you're getting trolled OP. Also welcome to the crappy new world of Digital Goods where there is barely any consumer protection.

The updates have ruined more than a few skins that I have, but I never held out any hope that a Giant Soulless Chinese Corporation would give a hoot about treating its customers well. Heck they probably see it as good business as it encourages you to buy a NEW SKIN instead of using that old skin you bought 2 years ago. Bad consumer bad, you buy new shiny skin now! kekekeke!

They have your money, and they could not care less about giving it back to you. Their philosophy is that they allow everyone 3 refunds, and then you can go $#@! yourself if you're not happy after that.

BLU Medic12/10/2014, 9:03:50 PM7 votes

I've never been sure how Riot loses 'tons of' money if they refund the RP for a skin. You don't get any physical money back, you get given imaginary money to spend on imaginary things. Alright, they'd have to make their support work a bit harder, but apart from that, no actual money is exchanged when you get a refund, whether it's one of your three refunds or one from support.

Surely it can't hurt to give refunds based on how much a skin and champion are used? That way, for example, a Sona main who is disappointed with Arcade Sona would get a refund but someone who owns Sona and her skins but hasn't played Sona in months would be denied.

Bresn12/10/2014, 10:47:09 PM7 votes

No refund for redesigns? Rito you make enough $ plz...

Quepha12/11/2014, 2:31:58 AM7 votes

you shouldn't be surprised after what they did to trundle and his skins. nothing in the game compares to that total 180 in character design.

Helm12/10/2014, 11:56:41 PM6 votes

This must be a fairly new policy, because I got a full refund on Bandit Sivir when she received her VU. Sorry to hear about your troubles, bud. I don't feel like you should have to burn a refund token for content that you didn't necessarily want. I can't do much but give you a bump, so here you go. Best of luck, friend.

Apex Citavista12/10/2014, 8:57:00 PM6 votes

I actually do kind of agree with you. I could see how the system could be abused. However, with something that is that drastic of a change, they should rework the system to sort the cases better, to see who does deserve a refund. and for all those people complaining about how it would take riots time and money, do you even realize how much money riot makes? in 2013 they had a report revenue of 624 MILLION. Spending a few thousand, or even a few tons of thousands, would be basically chump change for them.

OneSlickPhony12/10/2014, 7:23:28 PM3 votes

I like the new Totemic Maokai. :(

The face on his hand is creepy as hell now.

Dehorn12/10/2014, 9:22:22 PM3 votes

well just remember, you dont own anything. when you buy rp, you are donating money and they let you play with fun stuff. you own 0% of league. so they can do whatever they want with it.

Gray Fanchon12/11/2014, 3:19:55 AM1 votes

Man, if they don't this they risky retroactively losing money everytime they redesign something. You bought it, you got use out of it, right? Tell Riot you're dissapointed with the change and would like to see more of those influences you liked in the original Totemic skin in a new skin or champion.

I don't buy anything these days without the assumption that it might change at some point. That's just how League is as a game that's being changed over time.

Edit: Oh, I didn't see the part about refunding Riot Points, not money. Yeah, that system is incredibly abuseable, man. It sucks, but what else are they supposed to do?
