You DO NOT lose more LP if you surrender.

IDK why people still say this. its been there since i started in season 2, but for some reason people think riot punishes you if you surrender. Riot, please make a statement somewhere so when people say this, i can point to something. A dude would not surrender a 4-26 game because it would cost him more LP.

Personally, I don't surrender ranked games because they are ranked games. If you surrender you are guaranteed to lose LP. If you fight till the end there is a chance that you will not only not lose LP, but actually gain it.

There are exceptions of course (such as having an AFK), but generally that is my point of view. Now this point of view only applies to ranked, and when I am playing normals the primary thing I am interested in is fun and when something ceases to be fun I generally don't want to play it anymore.

Use an LP/Time model and your answer is the opposite. Getting through more matches with the same amount of play time grants a greater return of LP for a given win rate. As long as you are reasonably accurate at gauging whether a match is lost, the model says you climb faster, and gain more LP over time by surrendering when appropriate and moving on to the next match.

People think this?

Can't say I've ever heard anyone claiming that you lose more LP for surrendering before.

Honestly, I've only heard people say the opposite so that the second tings turn bleak they try and surrender.

So you prefer to surrender a game before you play it? Honestly I turned around games even after me and my team fed or lost alot of team fights simply because we preserved.

If you are going to surrender just because 1 or 2 or 3 team fights went bad dont play Ranked please. Main reason people surrender is because they dont want to play a game that they believe they have already lost when the rest of the team does not believe they have lost and can still turn it around.

Still if you have an AFK or someone who left the match and wont return feel free to surrender because that's a valid reason, however first do try to turn it around because even as a 4vs5 you can still win the game.

As for surrendering and losing LP in a way you can say that surrendering the game can make you lose alot of LP because you might get stuck in that "loser attitude"(I have seen people being stuck in that attitude and thus losing alot of games and it's mostly because they surrendered alot of games).

Ofc this is only in EUNE so I dont know how the the community or que times or the games are in NA.

As far as I know you lose more IP, not more LP, if you surrender

Although it is always better to not surrender. You never know the possible outcomes of a battle.

In a match limited model, this is true. In a time limited model, this is not true. I can't speak for others, but I'm on a time limited model.

lets see

play 100 games

surrender all the ones where you're 20 kills behind

let's pretend that's 20 games

all the other games for the sake of a dream you win

now let's pretend instead you never surrender

and 3 of those 20 games turn around and you win

tell me again how surrendering doesn't cost extra lp?? surrendering in this example cost you three games worth of lp.

Tryndaddy3 votes

The time it might take to finish those 20 games may be longer than the time of the 3 comeback games. So i guess you could say it's a waste of time to not surrender

Wimbledofy1 votes

but those 3 games are actually worth 6 games since it is taking away a loss and replacing it with a win. What i mean is that it would take 6 more games that you have to win to make up for those 3 you lost.

lofi n chillhop1 votes

if you feel pressed for time, it is valid to wish to surrender to save time. however, surrendering is a voting system. if your teammates vote no surrender, it's honorable and respectful to try your best for them. if your teamates do surrender when you don't want to, well then you just let it be and move on.

Lets see - you continue 20 games you are LITERALLY 20 kills behind in, tell me how many of those you ACTUALLY turn around and win. If you MANAGE to win three of them I will upvote your comment and suggest to everyone else to do the same.

Once your 10 kills down in ARAM or 15 kills down in SR that's usually a point of no return where you might be 5% chance of coming back - however this might take the whole length of ANOTHER GAME that you can play instead. Strategically lose the battle - allow yourself to dust off go to next game and win the war.

I've personally won enough games from 20+ kill deficits, that I see no point in surrendering ever. I didn't bother to count them, but I can think of two, one about two months ago and one last September. they both stick in my mind because the one in september was with a friend I miss, and the one two months ago I was very proud of because I both overcame my own tilt but also convinced my teamates that in order to win we had to trust each other.

I know that there's been more wins from big deficets than those two. but I'm going to be honest. I stopped paying so much attention to kill scores, and pay more attention to the decision making of my teamates and enemies. I think about what plays I can make to prevent my foes from being able to advance the game, and I think about which teamates I should be making plays with, and which I should be trusting not to give up while I let them solo farm. and I don't notice the kill score all that much.

oh and aram? no it matters even less in aram. I've won an aram game that was about 50 kills to 90 kills before, that was a real funny game xD

that's fine I guess. I'm just explaining my reasoning. if it's not reasoning you like, all power to ya :D

Doesn't it affect your MMR in some way? Like, the system records that you surrendered a game, so it assumes that youre not good enough for your elo since you just gave up trying to win. So it will try to bring you down to an elo at which youll stop surrendering or something like that.

No, it goes on a win/loss basis and the gains/losses depend on your opponents and your team. Surrendering does nothing except end the game quicker.

If time were not a finite reaource, never surrendering would be the correct choice. Since time is in fact a resource, never surrendering is illogical. Math and statistics prove you climb rank faster if you surrender games with a high likelihood of loss.

That said sometimes I don't want to surrender because I really just wanna grind a shit talkers face into the dirt on the enemy team.

But Im Nunu1 votes

I agree with that second part. If you're toxic the entire game and doing badly yourself, I will not surrender just to 1) prove you wrong and we can win or at least 2) make them suffer for being toxic to others.

McKeifus1 votes

Surrender a losing game to start a winning game. Wow, it's like a magical cloud opened up, I never about it that way, but only because I don't possess the basic capability for logical thought.

Nidelkha3 votes

If you surrender then you're a little bitch.

God I hate teammates that won't surrender for anything. Like, the match is already annoying as fk, everyone is yelling at each other and shittalking all match long... Just end the suffering and go try again.

Ale non è male3 votes

Except the problem is a good amount of people call the "breaking point" too soon Like, I had a ranked yesterday where the enemy got too fed because our Xin jungle was too ballsy in the gankes and failed them giving kills across the map, our Ahri mid died for no reason too often feeding them even further, even if I was not dooing too bad I had some trouble with lag so I was failing obvious hooks on Nautilus and our Nasus top although was doing kinda good in a not easy matchup vs Graves was playing on an island (well, he is Nasus) and so they had big tower, gold, kills (6k gold, 3 towers, 1-2 kills at 20 minutes, their Tristana ADC EXTREMELY FED) and we flamed each other for a bit

Then we got a pair of picks into the jungle, due to good vision set up and calls, started to put ourselves back on track by playing everybody better (Ahri dieing less, me with ping problems resolved, Xin doing some better ong engages, Nasus showing up big in fights, Jinx cleaning up well), and after some back and forth exchange included a therir decent baron call once they took our mid inhib that we reverted to our favor with a good performance of deny baron + splitpush and in the end we won the game

A pair of times when we were trailing there was a surrender vote, one being 3/2 but looking at hindisght it was obvious the game was not over and if we were calling for the call of a pair of guys that thought the "breaking point"was yet reached we wouldn't have won a game that was really winnable

Lauchmelder2 votes

Some people want to trap the toxic players in a game to PREVENT them from joining another one. It's a kind of damage control.

KVbqbFsC8e2 votes

I've never heard anyone say that.

Serika Zero2 votes

Contrary to the popular belief, you DO lose more LP if you surrender. Afterall, you get to start the next game faster and lose that one too. So, instead of losing 20lp in the 40-50 minute game, you will end up losing 40lp in 2 quick surrenders :)

But Im Nunu1 votes

On the other hand, you can also win the next one. So with that logic, you will lose less (if not gain). We are talking about a single game.

I don't see how people cant see this in a real life application. Most of the time you've got other obligations in life. So doing your best to play the most matches in the least amount of time will always be optimal. Everyone arguing the hypothetical possibility of more LP by winning the matches you gave up on can stop. Reality doesn't work that way.
