What I think defines someone mastering a champion.

To prevent criticizing someone else, I'll use myself as an example for this. I main Kha'Zix. Keep in mind this post is my opinion.

#Games Played Does Not Define Maining/Mastering a Champion https://i.gyazo.com/522dae21bff0f49d7fbf6d4cd4fd8d16.png

The amount of games you play on a champion does not speak that you main/master them. To me, a champion is more than just playing them a lot. In time playing them a lot can translate to doing well on them, but pure volume of games isn't evidence since there are people that could play a champion 100 times and not even know their passive.

#Champion Mastery Does Not Define Maining/Mastering a Champion https://i.gyazo.com/de3b6ab77784ea626c27c40c9c83fbce.png

This is debatable. There really isn't a perfect way to automatically rank how good someone is on a champion, so it's not Riot's fault that the Champion Mastery system is sometimes flawed. People can argue that things like CS or objective control aren't specific to champion mastery, and you could argue the opposite. The fact of the matter is, however, that having a really good game on a champion every once in a while, which got you rank 7, shouldn't be taken as a reason you main that champion. The end answer is that this isn't a viable way to show that you've "mastered" a champion.

#Rank/ELO Does Not Define Maining/Mastering a Champion https://i.gyazo.com/4bf105a12af875221b43d934b636abca.png

This should be self explanatory, but I'll bring it up anyway. For myself as an example, the fact that I am in a "above average" rank and play Kha'Zix mainly does not mean I am a main of his. Being good at the game does not directly translate to being exceptionally good at a champion.

#Skins Does Not Define Maining/Mastering a Champion https://i.gyazo.com/936b28c858207a08c6898e04b317b7ad.png

Again, very obvious statement, but for those of you who aren't aware, having cosmetic content for a champion does not display skill. However you look fucking amazing amirite.

#What Does Define Maining/Mastering a Champion? Consistent Performance. https://i.gyazo.com/7665d5d919a1b61fc24fe164d33061e0.png

This is what really means you've mastered a champion. Like the other examples, it's subjective. If you are smurfing or belong in a much higher skill level, it's different. But when you can consistently perform above other players in your MMR who are playing champions that they either play moderately or main, I feel like this means that you have mastered your champion for your individual situation. You could argue if you truly master a champion it would carry you to Challenger, but that's individual skill. Champion mastery is based on your performance.

I don't know how much discussion will come from this post, but as a fore-warning this is not a "Kha'Zix is OP thread" so please do not argue such. Certain champions do better at different ranks, and the fact that I can crank out Kha'Zix normal game wins does not mean he is over powered.

Thanks for reading. Now go out there and master your champ.

See, this is why you'll never be the greatest player in the world. This is why Faker will never be the greatest player in the world. Neither of you understand the underlying concept of all League of Legends, the rule that is absolutely necessary to go beyond good, and become great, a true Champion in your own right, one who can be worthy of being called Challenger:

Skins = Wins

Weathered23 votes

I actually leaned forward because the post sounded really intriguing. I was not disappointed.

Coperos4 votes

You know, I bet there is psychological factors regarding skins that drastically effect win rates.

Mazariamonti5 votes

I find that I get more annoyed when I get shown up by some guy who isn't using a skin.

WitchKing0073 votes

I mean, you aren't wrong. 90% of the time when I play Garen with his steel legion skin, I somehow out-perform my playing ability when I don't use it. Needless to say, it's not particularly hard to go god-mode with Garen , but I'm not complaining.

Actullay just hate champs that are very easy to play. Why ihate annie and fiddle. Sorry m8 :/

LordGeovanni4 votes

you mean champions that actually have to get close to their enemies before doing damage instead of standing out of retaliatioon range pokeing and fireing a higher than most damage lower than many skills cooldown skill. and ones that get free stats for being them

Elstir3 votes

Are you saying that i'm bronze cause i dont buy skins? Damn..

Selfhood3 votes

I reached the stage where I can't play a champion without a skin.

Nameless Voice3 votes

Sometimes, a champion has no skins that I like. This means that I will never be able to master them.

Sahn Uzal33 votes

You just wanted to show off that winstreak didn't you?

Weathered21 votes

I actually was working towards it just to make this post, but I'm not going to say I'm a saint, so it's nice to show something you've accomplished ^.^

All games are normals... [slayer-jinx-unamused]

DrProfVibeCheck1 votes

The only difference between a ranked win and a normal win is that one gets you elo.

DeathTheHorseman1 votes

They use different matchmaking ratings as well.

There is your Ranked MMR and then there is your Normals MMR.

MMR declines if you don't play normal games for 3 months you will get matched with people who are bad at the game and then it's easy to stomp.

XinZhao2WinNhao5 votes

I had a similar winstreak too. But it came right after a 15 game losestreak.

Mazariamonti3 votes

Lol I took a screen shot of my 9 game win streak with my main, then I scrolled down and saw a 8 game loss streak, so i decided not to bother.

You will only perform to that ability for so long until you hit a kind of wall. My smurf got to Diamond 5 in 40 games with only Zed, almost a 90% winrate or something similar. Being consistent is one thing, but once you get to higher ranks you don't win every game anymore. I win almost all of my normals on Kha'Zix and Zed and all of my other mains, but doing it in ranked is another thing. Nobody will be perfect but you can get damn close, and rank definitely matters. My winrate on my smurf obviously didn't stay at 90% at diamond+, I started losing every once in a while.

Another example is when I was master tier 100+ LP this season. My Kha'Zix winrate was 60%+, but now it's like 47% and I'm in D2 (then again a lot of those were with tyler1 on my team and other notorious ragers/flamers. I would consider myself a damn good Kha'Zix player, most of my friends say one of if not the best they've seen in their games before (I'm clearly not the best ever, they mean from their perspective) so rank means something. Consistency isn't a fair comparison. I can go on a massive win streak, it's not gonna make me master my champ any more than I have. Winning the majority of your games counts as mastering. If I face some 900+ game 1 mil mastery Zed player in plat, while I've played up to around 460k mastery and played across multiple seasons with only 70 games in ranked, does it mean he's mastered Zed more if he's on a win streak? Having 900 games and still being plat means you have not mastered your champion, clearly. Even if you do really well a lot of your games in a row, it doesn't mean you did it. Part of mastering is knowing what to do and when to do it, and using your champ to full effectiveness to win the game. Maybe he outplays me, I'm not saying his mechanics are shit, for all I know his mechanics can be godly, but clearly he's doing something wrong if he's still only plat.

Your individual skill on a champion correlates to if you can keep winning or not. If you can't keep climbing, you hit a wall. If you hit a wall, you didn't master your champion. Your performance will come to a halt eventually.

Downvoted, obviously skins = mastery

Mysticman895 votes

I feel like if you consistently perform above other players in your MMR, that is pretty much by definition 'you belong in a much higher skill level'.

Weathered1 votes

I don't know how to trust this assumption, because my normal MMR is actually higher than my ranked, ie I get paired with at least 1 diamond player and at most 5. Personally I don't think I belong in Diamond, so I don't know how to judge whether or not winning those games speaks for that.

Mysticman892 votes

Being matched with diamonds in normals doesn't imply you're playing at a diamond level, just that (if it's a consistent match up), you're playing at the level diamonds play in normals. This is most likely a far lower level than diamonds play in ranked, since normals is where high rank players go to screw around in their off-roles and/or with weird builds and so on.

Still, if you're winning much more than 50% of your matches, you're not at your 'correct' mmr for that mode.

Dr Poro2 votes

Your normal MMR is indeed higher. https://na.whatismymmr.com/SlayerTay6 Note that this site isn't completely accurate, but does give you an idea of where you're situated. While top 5% isn't quite yet diamond, it is about mid-platinum. It still has to be nuanced because unranked players are usually on the bottom side and people will not tryhard on their main champs in normals. So depending on whether you tryharded on Khaxzix on normals or not, it should give you somewhat of an idea where you can land if you continued playing ranked with the same performance. I'm pretty sure you could even surpass that if you try your best.

G1Radiobot4 votes

I think it might be better to think of the mastery system as being a quick way of telling others that you are experienced with the champion, and should be treated as being a little more dangerous then the average person on that champion. It does require a good amount of skill at a particular champion to earn an S rank, and while having mastery six or seven on Riven doesn't make you Box box, it does mean that you are a force to be reckoned with.

Spicy Rice2 votes

Not really. I've often pulled s ranks on champions I rarely, if ever play, simply because I had a good game

Arcus Diabolus4 votes

Throughout this post you, accidentally or not, mistook maining a champ for mastering them or vice versa, I don't know.

Your main is simply your go to pick. Its the one you've put work into learning and just feel the most comfortable using. That said, you can be horrible even when using your main. You could lose every game you play even with your main and it will not stop being your main. All that matters is you are most comfortable using that champion.

Take fighting games for example, where maining a character is quite arguably much more important than it is in League. In Blazblue, I'm a Noel main (Ragna sub, for anyone curious) and I'm by no means the best or even in the top 40% of Noels. However, I'm still picking Noel into almost every matchup simply because I'm the most comfortable using her. Doesn't stop the fact that I'll lose many matches. It just means I'll pick myself up and pick Noel again and again.

Am I arguing that maining a champ has nothing to do with mastery? Hell no. Enough practice and very clear correlations begin to appear. There is just a huge difference between mastering a champ and maining that champ.

Weathered2 votes

Originally I had all of the "main/master" as just "main", but didn't think that was right so I changed it to both to speak towards mastery as well as all of the players who say "I main x champion" when I don't think they do.

Although I do agree with you somewhat. I main Jigglypuff in smash, not the best choice xD

I dunno about that. The only case I can say that someone isn't a X champion main is if they don't pick that champ enough to have it stand out among other champs they play. If someone where to say they mained Jinx but they played Jinx as much as any other champ, I have to disagree.

This isn't to say they can't have a main for every role, because god knows I simply can't pick Riven bot ADC, so I got Varus for that. And I'm not saying that one has or even needs a main. Being just as comfortable about playing any champion as any other just means you don't main anyone, and thats fine.

Weathered2 votes

Honestly, my OP could be dead wrong. I wanted to see what would happen if I specifically showed my opinion on what maining/mastering meant, and I got a lot of feedback. Some people have been talking about comfort picks, ratio of how much they play, and some other stuff. I like posts where someone says something specific and people actually talk about it rather than just saying no, so your right in a sense.

Maining is about your personal preferences, your personal #1 champ. Mastering is about your performance compared to the rest of the players. You don't have to be the #1 on that champ. The champ you main is your #1.

BluePolarizer1 votes

its a joke, making fun of the super edgy silvers who say that everyone below d1 50 LP is trash.

Michael Sykes3 votes

I agree totally with you. But your winning streak was in normal games, and it would be way more interesting to see your performance in a bunch of rankeds where generally more people are actually trying to be good :o

Weathered4 votes

For context, my normal MMR is higher than my ranked MMR (from what I can tell). 90% of my games have anywhere from 1-5 Diamond players. I've been counting. I know what you mean though.

uhm yeah, no idea why I got downvoted but nice. Of course he is right, I just said that it is way easier to get those winning streaks in normals

I dont know why you got downvoted. I get downvoted 99% of the time in LoL forums XD

Michael Sykes1 votes

take my upvotes for that Bro <3 xD In my opinion up- and downvotes are only for very bad and very good comments, despite the opinion the writer has. If I don't have the opinion a guy has, but his ideas are somehow justified and well written, I give him an upvote :o

Btw, I got a similar success with LeBlanc. Sadly she is getting that rework, but most likely it is going to make her stronger. Hell, I was so paranoid that I spammed comments around the champion roster update post and even got "mentioned" in a Redmercy video xD

Weathered1 votes

Recently got into Jayce and was doing pretty well, but when do you buy tear personally? I usually rush Dirk first.

ItsOrval1 votes

You can check my recent matches for my build order, usually the same. The only things i change are my armor/magic resistant items.

I build tear first back, so I can stay in lane longer and attack a bunch. Also tear builds up quicker, allowing you to get Muramana quicker. Only buy Manamune when your tear is full (750/750). Otherwise Manamune is useless compared to buying some extra damage (like last whisper, Dirk).

Build order:

Doran's Blade, Tear, Dirk, Last Whisper, Armor/MR, Youmuu's, Armor (Either Frozen Gauntlet or Frozen Heart depending on their team comp), Magic Resist (Maw/ZZ'Rot/GA/Mercurial), Manamune, then Lord Dominiks or Mortal Reminder.

People tend to not build armor on Jayce, and they get popped in an instant, whether it be a lucian ult, garen ult, syndra, etc. Thats why I build these types of armor, to always counter the opponent and be tanky as hell when I go in with my Hammer mode. And for amazing damage, Ice Gauntlet plus Hammer Mode passive buff on your next auto is op, it one shots adc.

It's not just about racking or winning consecutive games but understand the limitations and strengths of a champion as well as how they interact and contribute to different compositions and match ups. It really goes beyond basic mechanic skill and to master any champion means that you have well far beyond the 4 basic abilities of your champion.
