Just played my first game since the mage item update, and, uh, either I'm not doing it right, or his old core items are garbage on him now. How am I supposed to build this man now? Rod of ages doesn't work that well for me, because the scaling passive doesn't work that well with how Sol (or at least my Sol) roams as soon as possible. In particular, I'd like any builds that simulate the old one with Hextech GLP
Baron Barian1 votesTook a peak at your match history as a reference, but with only a 21 minute game, that's not really enough time to get your items. Like a lot of battlemages, he's at his best later in the game when you actually his items.

Not at all. You just gotta play smarter. His passive/W, can make a good farm tool, and his ult can make for a finishing move, self peel, or just a set up to combo with your Q and W.
The only reason a game will end early is if you and your team make bad mistakes early. Just gotta to aim for not doing that. Or at least, not anymore than 1 mistake during the first 10 minutes.

max W first and put 1 point into E at level 8, then you can max either Q or E second depending on what you prefer
for runes start with sorcery primary, phase rush every time the null orb/manaflow band, celerity, and waterwalking/scorch/gathering storm
then you can take inspiration with magic footware, stopwatch, biscuits, or whatever fits the bill
you can also go precision secondary just for pressence of mind if you want to play a heavy aggro early game style with ignite and a shit ton of auto attacks
rush rod of ages most games especialy if you go magic footware and are playing the scaling game, there isn't really an early game build for aurelion at the moment other than skipping RoA and going straight to rylais into liandry's but you miss out on too much mana sustain and so you have a lot mana problems with that build if you play your cards wrong
second item is purely situational but its your largest power spike because by the time its finished you will have 10 stax on RoA and become a beast if you haven't fed yet
some example second items would be [zhonya's, mejai', rylai's, banshee's, abyssal, morello,]
P.S. sol has amazing early ganks with his E, you should play around your jungler every game and follow him when he ganks bot always.
P.S.S. don't do the big Q it almost never works your better Q'ing after landing with E
