The State of Top Lane: Lolalytics and Statistics by Class

TehNACHO··9 votes·2,529 views

So it's getting pretty common to throw around how Tanks are dominating Top at the moment and how Bruisers Not an actual class specification are being pushed out of Top Lane, but I wanted to analyze if it's really true if Tanks as a class are pushing other Classes out of Top Lane. Unfortunately, not many statistics sites do statistics by Class, instead they do it by Champion, so I took it upon myself to record all the information I can find here, and then sort Classes based on how the Wiki sorts out those champions. What we get is this:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Ex1OTMKVvZW_e62rkOfrim8MW3mAtvQdP3_w2Af3J6Y/edit?usp=sharing

Color-coded based on Lolalytics' Tier List, I recorded the champion statistics for Winrate(B), Best Winrate (/M)(C), Pick Rate(D), and Ban Rate(E). I also combined the Pick and Ban rates(F), and multiplied Winrate by Pickrate to get %Win Influence(G), and Pick and Ban Rate for Total Influence(H). To rephrase, Influence is the % of all games the champion wins in factoring in the % of games it's picked (and banned).

If you scroll all the way down to the bottom of the Champion chart, you will find the statistics recorded per class. %Win Rate Influence (B) is the % of all games a Class wins in, calculated by adding the %Win Influence of all champions of that particular class together. What this means is that Top Lane Fighters are winning 32% of ALL games Top Lane. Pick Rate, Ban Rate, and Pick+Ban Rate are all just the summation of each Champion's Rates per class. This means that 65% (out of 200%) of all champions played Top and 57% (again out of 200%) are Fighters. Finally, Winrate is, somewhat self explanatory, the % of games won divided by the % of games played.

Since Tanks vs Bruisers Fighters is a huge argument on the Boards, I think it'd be interesting to look at how much Tanks are absolutely flooding Top Lane. Let's look at some of the data:

  • Fighters are the single largest influence on overall Wins in Top Lane. At 32% of all games Top, they have over 10% more influence than the next biggest Class. Not Tanks mind you, but the hot pot that are Specialists. Tanks are the fourth largest class, only beating Lucian Marksman and Mages in % of games won.
  • Somewhat obviously, to win so many games, Fighters are probably present in a lot of games. Here, the numbers are very similar to before, with Fighters leading the pack by a huge margin (by about 25% out of 200%) and Tanks being 4th place.
  • Ban Rate tells a slightly different story. While Fighters succeed at being the most banned class, Mages shoot up here largely thanks to Vladimir and Malzahar. The margin isn't nearly as far, with Slayers close behind Mages. Interestingly, despite all the apparent backlash against Tanks, they aren't actually banned all that often.
  • Specialists, as a (pseudo) class, actually have the highest winrate. Okay, maybe some of these threads have a point, Bruisers aren't winning, it's weirdos like Gangplank and Singed dominating Top. Tanks meanwhile are just below the 50% curve.

Other random details

  • Lmao Marksman
  • Gnar is the only one I caught being multi-classed. As such I included him in both values.
  • Made early morning of February 5th, details are subject to change
  • There's a bit of noise in the total percentages if you add them up. Tiny differences (like in cumulative winrates) may not matter at all, however the noise is only within single digits. Huge gaps like the overpopulation of Fighters top should be more than accounted for.

Stats don't tell the whole story. Also you aren't looking at diamond+.

TehNACHO2 votes

No, but they do tell trends really well. Like the overall statistics of whole classes of champions. But you know what, I love asking people to be more specific after being purposely vague. Go on, what story isn't being told here?

It's hard to find the exact quotes since Google is flooded with "[Riot]'s [Balance] Team is x", but Riot members have stated that Diamond+ is where they do most of their balancing, so I think that statistic is fair.

There's absolutely no proof to support any idea Riot balanced around diamond elo.

Full video is a good watch but HIgh Plat/Low Diamond is their sweet spot.

And I know Meddler made a Boards post too but it's so fucking hard to find.

It's people like this that makes these boards insufferable.

AirKingNeo2 votes

No, it's people who refuse to hold Riot accountable who make the boards insufferable. Anyone who refuses to make adults accountable for their actions makes life insufferable. Why should I simply trust what Riot says when I have already given reasons for distrust nor has done anything to earn my trust in the first place?

Do you trust everything your government says? What if they're biased, like a company, for let's say cars, hiring people for research on exhaust fumes effect on animals? You should always consider the reliability of your source, and I'm applying the same skepticism you should to any authority.

So you want Riot to upload video evidence of them going through their balancing process just to show you that the stats they pull for balancing are based on Plat/Diamond play?

AirKingNeo1 votes

No, I want them to prove, with how they balance, that they balance around Plat/Diamond.

If diamond+ is complaining about something, then it should be fixed 90% of the time.

I'll keep bringing it up: Ardent Censer, Maokai, Jayce, Kog'Maw, Xayah, Tristana, Lulu, Janna, and Kha'zix are my prime examples.

Also, you have to remember that there are other things to worry about, like pro play, and the occasional casual.

keep nerfing broken shit to a limit and find balance then. Just because the game has an imbalance mountain doesn't mean they shouldn't shave it down. They built it up; their job to fix it.

Proplay isn't interesting seeing those same broken picks every fucking game for 3 years. Casuals worry about Yi, Yorick, and other low elo shit.

Pro play isn't interesting because they aren't trying to make it interesting. The most they do is a couple of patches near the end of the season.

Casuals...Idk Idc about that, either.

Regardless, the game's not nearly as bad as people make it out to be. Like, it isn't...really. Every grievance is an "imbalance mountain" every season.

The game is worse than people make it out to be. Balance is so terrible that you have to be stupid to think otherwise. Literally, every lane has SSS, SS, and S tier champions who are way better than anything else. If you don't play them, you're not trying to win.

The only thing that isn't as bad as it seems is bruisers. Damage, tankiness, and shields have been put to the extreme, and the middle gets engulfed by it. Bruisers are the middle. Bruisers don't need mega buffs or anything, they just need their class update like everyone else got and everyone else needs to get toned down.

It's that way every season. Before Zoe, we had Syndra and Ori. You don't remember when everyone was saying "Orianna has no counters" when she had a fucking 50 percent win rate?

Every season, every patch, in bot lane, there's only up to 4 top tier marksmen. The rest are off-meta or garbage. Been that way since forever. Nothing about recent changes makes that different.

Regardless of what we do, Janna is always the highest win rate support, or one of them, in solo queue. Riot's tried everything and she's still top spot in solo queue.

If junglers don't gank, the complain is that they pve and win the game. If they do, the complaint is that junglers are doing too much and have too much influence on everyone's lane.

This community is full of babies. Babies never stop crying. To the very least, cry for useful things, like champ design improvements and itemization improvements, not going in a fucking loop over bullshit that never changes. That way we might see some real changes.

AirKingNeo1 votes

I, too, bring up statistics of winrate without pointing out playrate. So, maybe Riot should get off their ass and make the game less "play these 4 or you're not trying to win". Then nerf Janna because having a kit that says "invalidate melees" isn't good design. Then make jungle not gank too much while also not PvE too much.

We'd see real changes if Riot got off their ass. The community doesn't control Riot. People complain about the same thing because the thing was never fixed. It's like you're saying the French people are starving and have been for the past year and you're telling them to shut up about their lack of food.

Oh, get off your high horse. I post play rates all the time and no one gives a flying shit until you happen to NOT post them because the data's from 1 to 2 years ago.

So, maybe Riot should get off their ass and make the game less "play these 4 or you're not trying to win".

How? Marksmen are only used for one thing, and they're all in one lane. There's no reason to use any other one other than the hardest hitting one. Nerf one, and people will use the next one like they always have.

Then nerf Janna because having a kit that says "invalidate melees" isn't good design.

Janna invalidates her fellow enchanters more than anything else with her kit. If Janna was such an issue to melee champs, Camille wouldn't be a top pick given how much Janna's picked in solo queue atm. Champs like Jarvan also wouldn't be good.

Then make jungle not gank too much while also not PvE too much.

How do you come up with these answers as if they're actual answers? This is entirely subjective.

We'd see real changes if Riot got off their ass.

Some of these things are complicated and take time. Others of these things have already been dealt with. Doesn't mean shit, because you're still ready to light the forums afire over nearly anything. Like I said, babies never stop crying. The LEAST that could be done is crying over actually useful things that could make the game better. Buffs and nerfs are a loop. They come and go. Actual additions and renditions are what improve the game.

AirKingNeo1 votes

Oh, get off your high horse. I post play rates all the time and no one gives a flying shit until you happen to NOT post them because the data's from 1 to 2 years ago.

Isn't that somewhat contradictory? Why even bring up stats from a while ago if you can't give the whole context of them? If you're smart enough to realize you can't put them in context, then you're smart enough to realize you shouldn't put them in an argument.

Anyways, this is what I've got for Orianna stats. http://www.metasrc.com/all/5v5/7.10/champion/orianna/mid?ranks=diamond,master,challenger (I just picked 7.10 at random. I am not trying to cherrypick a patch. This website goes back to 6.24, the last patch of season 6/end of preseason 7.)

How? Marksmen are only used for one thing, and they're all in one lane. There's no reason to use any other one other than the hardest hitting one. Nerf one, and people will use the next one like they always have.

No, not really. Marksmen meta completely shifted away from Lucian to Tristana because supports got all laning phase agency over lane bullies like Lucian, large tanks need to be killed that Tristana kills, and hypercarry items got better. The meta right now is who hits the hardest because the meta calls for it; it is a polarizing meta.

Besides, even if their end goal is DPS, you can still make them balanced while different. I know this is true because I mod for balance on a racing game for the Gamecube called Sonic Riders. Sure, the end goal is to be faster and win, but there are different niches and playstyles things can exist while being balanced.

and to any "the game can't be perfectly balanced" argument: Get closer then! Rather than have SS tier, S tier, skip A tier, B tier, and C tier, give me S tier (like 1 champion), A tier, B tier, and C tier. Of course, I haven't gone into impact of lane vs lane (like power of bot lane vs top lane), but we're talking about the matchups right now; that else is a different discussion.

Janna invalidates her fellow enchanters more than anything else with her kit. If Janna was such an issue to melee champs, Camille wouldn't be a top pick given how much Janna's picked in solo queue atm. Champs like Jarvan also wouldn't be good.

Jarvan is fine right now because the change to his ult that keeps his targets within his ult when they flash mid cast and stuff. Camille is good right now for reasons completely unrelated to Janna. Unsure of Janna and negating enchanters.

How do you come up with these answers as if they're actual answers? This is entirely subjective.

You see, League is a dynamic game. Changes at one moment can sometimes not be good for another, though if it is actually a good change then not often. The issue right now is camping is too effective and therefore jungle has too much agency. A simple answer to a simple problem: force jungle to be in the jungle longer and be punished for not killing jungle camps. Keep testing and testing and testing until a good value is found.

No, they really don't take time. I, personally, figured out Xayah was busted 1 patch after her release and was able to confirm it the patch after even with some of the nerfs she got then. She's gone through destroying pro-play, holding record damage in solo queue patch after patch, and being near 100% pick ban at worlds and nothing has happened to change her. Clearly, time isn't the issue since we already knew she was broken simply by looking at stats and also playing the game to confirm it.

Xayah is literally dealing too much damage because her W makes her IE Crit autos have 300% AD ratio, her E deals too much damage, and, subsequently, her R + E combo is nuking people. She also has a free laning phase by using Q auto auto auto E to clear waves and somehow use little mana. Could easily reduce her E damage by 1/2/3/4/5 (per rank) per feather (hits waveclear and some of the early damage), reduce her E crit ratio (just to stop the insane damage later), reduce her W to 10% or 15% (probably 15% and we wait for the impact of the rest of the nerfs), and then some minor nerfs to her base mana regen or mana (either base or per level), prevent her Q auto auto auto E lane stonewall). Now, I just come up with that on the fly right now, but I clearly took the key issues and did things to resolve them. Either this isn't complicated or I'm just really fucking smart. And yes, obviously you playtest this shit and adjust accordingly.

I don't think it takes 3 months to fix Ardent, a year to fix Kog'maw, a year to fix Fiora, 6 months to fix Shen, and Jayce and Maokai have been broken for 2 years straight but pretty much untouched.

Don't refer to me; I don't start fires over everything. I just want a better league and only talk about important things. I'm not stupid like people suggesting AP champions get a QSS. I'm not detached from reality and saying tanks are weak.

I agree. People should complain about things that matter. I want to bring that kind of platform here, "The Newsroom" platform, but I am unsure what I can do to make a large claim to credibility to make sure people upvote my posts so my very thought-provoking, intelligent stories are brought to the public eye. Call me somewhat of a narcissist if you want, but I'm saying I have good ideas and am capable of coming up with more that I think need public attention, and I am confident in myself.

Buffs and nerfs might be a loop, but I still think the system could be improved. More attentive to broken shit, makes sure meta isn't 2-3 tiers above the average champion, and is less biased. I'm fine if a balance member wants their champion to be viable and playable, but, if you can fix your champion and other champions at the same time, then work towards that change rather than put something that makes me say, "Why not fix everything instead? You're just being biased and not really doing your best job. Now this champion is going to be overpowered/broken once the buff that fixes why the class sucks comes because they have another buff on top of everyone else."

Obviously, some renditions and additions need to be changed.

That's a double negative. Don't shift the burden of proof like that. You're the one who disparaged the lack of data for diamond +, so go get the data for diamond+ and prove it yourself.

AirKingNeo2 votes

Actually, the burden of proof is on Riot. They made the claim, without evidence, to say they balance around Diamond. Imagine you're a president of a country and you claim you're for the middle class, but you never gave any reasons to show you were.

Regardless: Multiple champions are broken in high elo and go unchanged for months on repeat. That would be the opposite of balancing around high elo; that is negligence.

doodlebob6662 votes

They made a statement, and you are saying they are lying or are misstating the truth, the burden of truth is on you because they are stating something and you are questioning that.

Imagine you're a president of a country and you claim you're for the middle class, but you never gave any reasons to show you were.

people wouldn't just say hey your not middle class, they would look into his past and see whether he was or not, that is what journalists are for

In this case it isn't even hard to find proof that they don't balance only around high elo, they often nerf champs because they are dominant lower in the ladder, making them unplayable in the top, and they have also said they balance around plat+, which is mostly plat players who are sorta high elo but far closer to golds in skill than high diamonds.

Yorick is unnnerfed, but apparently the best top laner in bronze.

yorrick was nerfed when they lowered his base ad after runes were released despite not being good higher than plat, which I don't count as high elo

AirKingNeo1 votes

Tbh, I just think a Riot balance member just lost to Yorick and thought she was broken while he was in silver or something.

HalcyonDweller1 votes

Actually if Riot makes a claim it is their responsibility to prove it. Burden of proof lies with the person making a claim, not the people questioning it.

Just as it is AirKingNeo's responsibility to bring his own data if he wants to claim that the OP's data is somehow bad.

TehNACHO2 votes

Just throwing it in here that there is a video of Ghostcrawler talking about their balance sweet spot.

At the 22:50 mark he even has a graph, a red arrow pointing at High Plat/Low Diamond, and calls it a sweet spot.

Salson6 votes

The thing is, winrate itself doesn't really matter.

You can abuse Klepto to get an item lead and do more that your opponent. You can abuse Comet to bully your opponent out of lane. You can abuse PTA to give your team 12% more damage on a target. But you kinda needed the old Fervor to truly hard carry.

You can win games by simply doing more than your opponent. But then you realize you spent the game playing Robin to someone else's Batman - Jungler early, Adc late. And knowing that you're just a really good Robin is rather bullshit.

TehNACHO2 votes

Uhh.

Go back and actually reread the post. I like to go by Influence, which accounts for Playrate as well, and as an aggregate for all possible games with all of those possible abuses and outcomes, you should see why your criticism of the data is just plainly flat.

Salson3 votes

And now what?

Fighters win games by beating tanks in 1v1 and then trying to 3v2 the enemy botlane. They don't hard carry.

Neither do Tanks to be fair, the problem with them is slowing down the lane so neither player can carry.

Though keep in mind that Tanks are only really good in premades where they actually have a team.

TehNACHO1 votes

I feel like this is now a completely different discussion altogether.

I mean do realize I haven't discredited you - you're right in the very specific scenarios you're imagining. What I'm trying to tell you is that I'm accounting for data from all scenarios (or at least, from the entire playrate) so arguing about specifics here is arguing over individual subpixels on a 4K screen.

Okay let's get into the nitty gritty:

  1. You're calling "Bruisers" Fighters in your statistics.

For example:

-Yorick (Not actually a fighter) -Illaoi (Not actually a fighter) -Urgot (Not actually a fighter) -Volibear (Not actually a fighter) -Nasus (Not actually a fighter) -Darius (Not actually a fighter) -Garen (Not actually usually a Fighter)

These are all champs who primarily build tank, have major tank features, but also have very high damage output when people do not respect them, as well as sustain.

The ONLY real offensive items they ever build: item 3071 item 3078

Other than that, it's all item 3083 item 3748 item 3075 item 3065 item 3053 item 3068 item 3025 item 3193 item 3110 item 3194

The real question here is what you're calling a tank and what you're calling a damage dealer. The ones above have hits which bypass the need for AD scaling. Yorick has minions which supplement is scaling, and a massive AD ratio on Q. Illaoi has an insane AD ratio, and supplemental tentacle damage and very low cooldowns. Urgot has access to basic attack resets with enhanced damage, and a skill which kills anything below 25% HP. Volibear adds Flat damage, damage based on missing health, and very large scaling AP damage on his ult. Nasus has scaling non AD damage and such low cooldowns it stacks too reliably. 95% slow, and built in Armor penetration, as well as built in Life steal. His ult adds tankiness as well. Darius has low AD damage, until he manages to stack 5 stacks on a target. At which point his kit gives him up to 250 FREE AD. Otherwise, he builds tank. Garen when not built Lethality, is a tank with a item 3071 He has more tenacity than anyone in the game, and the highest on board regeneration, and ALWAYS builds Second Wind now.

If any of these champs build full AD, they generally fail hard and only have about a 30% win rate.

That's not a fighter.

TehNACHO3 votes

{quoted}

Okay let's get into the nitty gritty:

  1. You're calling "Bruisers" Fighters in your statistics.

No, I'm calling Fighters Fighters and you're pretending Bruisers are a thing.

Like straight up, literally every champion you listed is a Juggernaut under the class Fighter.

The real question here is what you're calling a tank and what you're calling a damage dealer. The ones above have hits which bypass the need for AD scaling.

I'm not calling anyone a damage dealer first of all. I actually state it directly in the post and here I'll quote myself:

[I sorted classes} based on how the Wiki sorts out those champions

It's the second to last sentence of the First Paragraph.

In this regard, I'm not accounting Builds at all, just for the champions being exactly what they are classified as. In this case, Juggernauts are Fighters and Tanks are Tanks.

Azadethe2 votes

I don't care about semantics. Your "Juggernauts" get the best of both worlds. They build tank, not damage dealer, and for all intents, they are tanks.

It's unusual for a Nasus or Darius not to tank AND mitigate 80+K Damage a game. That's on par with a "Tank"

Two very visual examples:

Rammus Malphite Are both tanks but they behave awfully like Juggernauts.... High tankiness, converted into damage, often only building 1 damage item, and both when played correctly do "Juggernaut-like damage" while also soaking 80k + damage and negating 80k more.

A wiki or "help" is not a mechanical reality of what a champion actually is. It's just words. If a Gun is labeled a knife, but behaves like a gun, fires like a gun, and requires cartridges like a gun, It is a gun.

These champion's item picks over time have changes. Their descriptions have not.

FCJAAAAGOOOO3 votes

Fighters need finished items to do damage.

Nasus's damage is from Grasp, Sheen and stacking Q.

Nasus is not a fighter.

Thanks to your chart I feel even sadder for maining the worse champion of top lane. JK, thanks for your effort to put this up together :)

Rainfall1 votes

there really is no toplane without fervor. its going to be tanks vs ranged champs the entire season. your post is utter nonsense in the state it is in and has no practical value or use. just because nasus is popular does not mean that fighters are in a good state. thats like giving 10 cakes to 1 person and 0 to 9 others and saying that everything is ok the average person has a cake.

TehNACHO1 votes

Would you explain why, out of 63 champions listed, some with higher influence than Nasus, that you picked Nasus to focus on?

Rainfall2 votes

well thats because in your entire post the only point you have about toplane is the percentage of games won by fighters, the biggest part of those games is just nasus by himself. Then again you try to talk about specialists as a class when 80% of your specialists is just gp by himself, this post is just a puke of statistics.

TehNACHO1 votes

The only point?

Nasus isn't a whole 65% of champions played top. I can literally ignore Nasus and still draw the conclusion that Top Laners have the highest Pick Rates, and a Ban Rate only second to Mages. But I guess Mage ban rates don't count to you either since Vladimir is such an outstanding individual, if I'm reading your post right. With his completely average winrate and his noneffect on the Class Playrate, that means minimal effect on the Class Influence. I can literally delete all the data on Nasus right there and most everything is still the same.

Acting as if Nasus is carrying Fighters that hard. You're not even right either, Camille has a higher %Win Influence than Nasus, why aren't you complaining about her you sheep.

cocacolalips1 votes

best elo is the most relevant stat on lolalytics for that kind of more detailed analysis imo, seems to follow the competitive meta really well too, the only downside it's slow to update since players have to play those champions for a couple weeks before it stabilizes again after every major patch.

average win rate and best win rate aren't useless and have the upside of giving you some immediate feedback but they are disproportionately affected by other factors such as champion difficulty, champion popularity, divisions (a champion winning 60% in diamond 5 isn't the same as a champion winning 60% in master), population discrepancy between divisions (when it says diamond+, what it really means is diamond 5/4 since most players are in those divisions) and for the best win rate, data that is too volatile due to a very low sample size (stuff jumps 5%+ back and forth every other day), which can be misleading.

Sire Hippington1 votes

The classifikations are a bit off imo. Yea, i know, riots official list and so on, but seriously, a wukong with full lethality built(his default these days) is a slayerand not a fighter. A rengar with full off is a slayer, not a fighter Same for diana and pant(who might count as specialist, he don't really follow proper fighter nor slayer patterns over all)

With their current builts and playstyles, they do not fit fighter patterns but funktion as slayers. And i always found jax beeing a slayer wierd, the most similar pick i can think of is Irelia, they both follow VERY similar patterns, for me he's a clear fighter... Don't just blindly follow a list thatz riot created ~2 years ago, atlleast look at their definition for the classes and reevaluate the list based on that.
