Seriously though, it mostly boils down to three things.

Build some sustain. Mao has innate sustain, you need to be able to match it at the least
Build some MR. Mao's scaling are downright horrible, the strongest being 50% on his ult. If you build defenses, he won't be hurting you.
Do NOT, I repeat NOT, go for prolonged fights against him. Baring a few champions ( etc) Maokai excels in long battles. Especially at level 6+, his ult + passive means he'll be a lot harder to kill than you think. On the other side though, he's very vulnerable to poke. His ult has a long enough cooldown, meaning if he just toggled it off, he's very open to damage. The trick is to wear him down slowly rather than try to force a big fight against him.
