Taking a pass at ADC itemization in the Pre-Season

So it's happening, according to Riot. Not sure what it'll consist of, but it's happening.

Regardless of how things go down, I thought I would discuss the issue of ADC itemization and precisely what's causing it to be so stale.

To begin, what does the average end-game Ranger build look like?

Boots, an AD/Crit item, an IAS/Crit item, a %pen item, a lifesteal item, and a defensive item. Defensive itemization already has plenty of options (except an AD/Ar item, Rito plz) so we won't go there. Boots are (more or less) fine as well. Instead, we'll look at the options we've got for the other four slots.

AD/Crit options: item 3031 Lifesteal options: item 3153 item 3072 item 3146 item 3508 %Pen options: item 3035 item 3071 IAS/Crit options: item 3078 item 3142 item 3046 item 3087

You're probably wondering why I included YoMama's Ghostblade, Hextec, and the ever-awful Reaver in the list. Let's get to that right off the bat.

In these sets of items I see the foundation for four different types of champions that could be supported. The traditional ADC (Thirster) the OnHit ADC (BoRK) the hybrid ADC (Gunblade) and the AD-Caster ADC (Reaver). You can see it to a degree in the IAS/Crit options as well. The problem is that most of the options are either (very) poorly executed or simply lack the support in the other item categories.

I propose that Riot should zero in on these four item sets to make all four types of of ADCs viable to build as rather than EVERYONE sticking to more or less the same cookie cutter build. Now, before I go any further I want to say that some champions would without question be unbalanced by the following proposed changes. That's the case with any disruptive change to the game. But I think shaking things up a bit would be worth the creation of actual diversity in ADC itemization.

We'll start with the Lifesteal line. Thirster and Bloodthirster are more or less fine. Gunblade will be getting a great buff with the addition of stealing health from ALL damage you deal come pre-season. The only other change it could use is making its active scale off bonus AD as well as AP. That leaves us with poor, maligned Essence Reaver. The solution there is really, really simple. Make it build out of Pickaxe, Forbidden Idol, and a Vampiric Scepter. Make its passive grant 10% spellvamp in addition to lifesteal. That would cement it as the game's lifesteal item for AD casters.

The IAS/Crit line is likewise pretty healthy. The only change I would suggest here is MAYBE adding some kind of additional mobility option to Dancer to make it a bit more attractive over Shiv.

For %pen, the items we've got right now are already pretty versatile. The only glaring omission is a lacking option for hybrid champions. The solution here would be to remake the more or less ignored Rageblade. 25 AD, 40 AP, and somewhere between 25% and 30% hybrid penetration. Rageblade would share a named passive (Ruin, maybe?) with Void and Whisper to prevent them from stacking.

And finally, we come to the worst offender. The reason why we can't have nice things.

Infinity Edge.

Infinity Edge is, single-handedly, the reason why ADC itemization is so stilted. It's a great item for traditional ADCs, but doesn't offer much for... well... basically everyone else. So what do we do here? Add in a new named passive line, Augmented Critical. Infinity Edge would have it. And so would three NEW items catering to the other three Ranger types. We'll assume here that Wicked Hatchet would be entering the Rift as a new item component. Some items would keep its Bleed, others would swap it out for new (and better) options.

OnHit ADC: (item 3122+item 1043+item 3086 ) Its Augmented Critical effect would cause OnHits to strike twice on critical hits. AD Caster: (item 3122+item 1037+item 3134) Its Augmented Critical effect would cause targets to have a (your crit%) chance on each instance of physical damage to bleed for (percentage) of your bonus AD in physical damage over three seconds. Hybrid ADC: (item 3122+item 1058+item 1018) Its Augmented Critical effect would deal (percentage of your AP) in magic damage on critical hits.

Well!

There it is.

My take on how to make ADC itemization a little less one dimensional. If anything stands out to you as an awful idea, let me know! I can always amend the concepts with better ideas to make a more sound topic.

Cool.

The onhit crit item + devourer tho lol

As you can see, shiv is bought twice as many times as PD. Instead of buffing shiv, I would look into ways to make PD more appealing. It's a big gamble of an item for me, because it doesn't give me good enough movespeed to run away from surprise attacks, even though it offers the highest chance to crit. I think the furor boot enchant (which is one of the least popular items) should have its effect go here. Skilled players can kite and have a better chance at survival, though admittedly it still doesn't help much for instances where you DON'T want to get into an enemy's leap range and would rather flee.

Heh.

I had considered that myself.

What you would probably want to do is make it so they share the Phantom Hit passive as well, just to make it clear that they don't stack. I imagine that the one with the higher proc chance (50% or whatever your crit chance is) would take priority.

And thanks for the information on Shiv! I was mostly just thinking in terms of 'this thing could use a small amount of OnHit damage to thematically link it to the other items.' But if it's strong enough now, then may as well leave well enough alone.

I'm not sure how good of an idea it would be to move the Furor effect over to Dancer, but then again basically everyone gets Homeguard because Homeguard are OP. That's a topic for a different topic, though. I think a stacking movespeed bonus OnCrit might be a pretty neat concept for Dancer. Or some other mobility effect. Or...

OH!

What about the active from the Mirage Blade from Brawlers? That could be an interesting addition.

I'd be fine with this if Last Whisper was removed

If Whisper were removed then everyone would just build Black Cleaver?

I mean, yeah, you could remove %pen as a stat that you can buy. But if you did that then you would probably need to nerf armor and magic resist values by at least 20% across the board.

%pen creates its own problems. If you don't have %pen then people who build resist are immortal. If you DO build %pen then suddenly they're wet paper bags. Honestly at this point I really don't think %pen needs to be removed between the additions of Cinder and Gage. They provide enough HP multiplication to serve well as a soft-counter to %pen.

Can you leave a link to Riot stating that they're cleaning up ADC itemization? I'd really like to read it.

Oh goodness...

I think it was in one of the (many) Juggernaut topics.

It was Meddler, IIRC, and he shared basically zero information on what's going down, just that it's a thing that will probably be happening during the per-season.

Then I can't believe it :P I'm not saying it's not going to be a thing at some point, but unless they explicitly say "We're revamping ADC items" then there's nothing to look forward to yet. Got my hopes up after all that...

No, I mean, he pretty specifically said that they're going to do a pass on ADC items once Worlds is over and the season closes down. He just didn't share any specifics on exactly what they're doing.

Between you and me, I'm hoping this topic might get them to provide a little more detail.

Or something.

Gotcha. Well, fingers crossed then. :)

I can confirm that it was said (I guess Meddler, if that's who the OP named) by a red that ADC itemization would come next, and then assassin itemization...I think, or it's the other way around.

Or swap assassin with mage lol. I forget. It's definitely ADC itemization though after worlds, so we're looking at pre-season.

Pretty sure it was just 'ADCs are up next!'

I made a topic a while back asking about Gunblade, and Meddler confirmed that it's up for work. IIRC, the plan is to make it heal for 15% pre-mitigation damage off of all damage you deal. Including weird outliers like Sunfire and Thornmail.

On-hit ADC + BotRK + Ashe = : )

Nope.

The OnHit Augmented Critical item wouldn't function on either Ashe or Samurai Bob due to the way their Innates interact with critical chance.

And before you say Riot would never do something like that, they already have. Lucian's Ult doesn't proc Muramana despite being a bunch of individual single-target spells.

Oh hey look, Riot just announced again that they're working on ADC itemization.
