I tried to play Lux vs Zed

I really didn't do too bad on landing poke, but walking in to auto attack him for my passive was basically inviting him to Q me which did 2x the damage of my E poke, and if I landed a Q+aa a Zed shadow combo would shortly follow with punishment as well.

As soon as we hit 6, it was pretty much over. Even with splitting my points W and E with barrier, I could barely survive his ult after rooting him when he ult+ignited. Once he returned with a Brutalizer, I was basically too scared to go near him.

This isn't really a Zed is OP post, but more of a "Lux's damage really isn't long range" post. Her passive is super risky against basically any champion in the game, her shield falls off fast considering her Q/E have longer cooldowns. Unless you are fed with a lot of AP, a Q+R+E with 2 auto attacks won't assassinate someone, and thats assuming you started her combo with a root and immediately ulted.

What other mid laner has to go through so many hoops just to land strong poke? Is her long range ult really the cost for extremely oppressive mana costs and a full load of skillshots that scripters (and good people) laugh at?

From a Lux main to you I say...Just practice. Its honestly not that bad, I honestly tend to out farm or just straight up beat Zeds in lane as Lux. Make sure you bring plenty of health potions and get chalice first.

{quoted} Barrier + W can negate almost all of his lvl 6 ult all-in damage. Then he can do nothing but run away.

If you Q bind him ult immediately before he can shadow off. Lux's ult is on ridiculously low cooldown and free damage is damage so take it.

Thanks for the post, but this is the exact problem I had.

He ults, I wait, I land the Q, W+Barrier for his oncoming damage, I ult while he's still stuck, and maybe get in 1 auto attack before he decides to return to his side of the lane instantly with ult blink.

He's at around 60% hp, and I've blown everything. A couple times I didn't IMMEDIATELY ult after the Q, people were able to just walk away. I don't know what the solution is but she's really underwhelming if you can't land linear skillshots on your laner.

Since Lux is a Mid mage, I think she should have other alternatives than, take exaust and hug the tower, and draw the lane. This is not just a Zed issue what does Lux do vs Talon, Yasuo, or Ekko?

Here are some ideas for Lux buffs that could help:

  • at least a 20% mana cost reduction.
  • what if proc'ing your aa was rewarded, for instance consuming illumination causes Lux to recover 20 mana?
  • give light binding a MS boost.
  • What if Lucent Singularity reduced all dashes by 30%

The answer is to focus on farming in these match ups and only risk autos when you are going for a kill. Once late game comes along as long as you land some good skill during teamfights it should still be worth having picked that champ.

Zed has better farming potential than lux lol

That's a tough matchup. Zed tends to stomp most long-range mages in lane, but I guess someone has to counter them right?

You bring more to the team than he does, as long as you don't feed you should hopefully be fine.

Some of her match ups such as Zed are so rough on Lux. You cannot let them get near you, because if they get in range of you, then it will mean certain death. Lux should never be in range for so much as an ignite mid lane.

Talon and Yasuo also counter her so completely. Early game you have little chance to take them out because she has such high mana costs, and it takes a lot of skill to land your spells on them, and risky to AA exchange after. I always thought her passive was nice, but a little awkward on Lux since she should never be in range to trade. The reward is not always worth the risk of losing your life. Usually at around 6 the only thing you can do is hug your turret, and hope you can get a gank, which isn't always possible. They might even end up getting away.

I know it wasn't too long ago that Riot looked at her, but I hope they do again someday soon and think about mid lane Lux a little more.

Tbh, the only long range mage I was able to go head to head with Zed was Xerath... This was after denying him farm with poke all laning time. But even then overextending was a silly decision, if I didn't rush zhonyas. But yeah, Lux is horrible against AD assassins.

when I play against zed as lux I usually poke hard but not too much that I don't have mana. If he ults I always use my q behind me right when the animation ends then lock him down. If you do this successfully exhaust won't be needed because he won't do any damage to you anyways.

Well for people I play it would be Swain strong reliable poke, but incredibly short range.

I played Lux for awhile, but didn't like how boned she was when anyone got to you, but with practice you can get pretty damn good at preventing them, going against Zed isn't the best judge of this, since he does technically counter you, but I never really had a problem with him, I used to just bait everything of his to take advantage of situations.

If I come in to auto I wait for his attack then I AA him, If I know he wants to ult I stay near turret and farm, if he jumps to me he gets hit by my Q and combo while taking turret shots, and this is easier to do now thanks to his ult delay.

That's simply because lux is kind of a hybrid between siege, burst, and utility mage. She can do all 3, just not as well as a champion dedicated to one. She doesn't have the zoning damage to force Zed out of lane, the burst damage to retaliate against him, and her cc is just enough to save her. This is basically an extreme skill match up honestly.
