Itemization Gap?

I'm pretty disappointed in the decision to remove DFG from SR. I don't necessarily disagree with their analysis of the effect it has on burst-centric champions, but hell, the whole goddamn point of the item is to increase AP burst. An analogy would be if I were to give, as a reason for removing the unlocked feature from processors, that overclocking makes an already fast processor even faster. DFG has been a rather prominent part of AP gameplay in league for quite sometime, but now all of a sudden it's so outrageously unhealthily it needs to be removed overnight?

Some of the direct ramifications of removing something like this will be that it instantly makes champions who build it as core less viable at the role they filled before. No matter how you try to rationalize it, this will be a severe net loss for quite a few champions who rely on amplifying their burst AP to be effective. I realize Riot is paying lip service to these obvious negatives by saying they will give "attention" to champs that are severely impacted by their main core item being removed. But let's be realistic, whatever changes they make to said champs will be wholly inadequate and not even come close to compensating for the power/timing spike that DFG gave them.

So, in the eventuality that quite a large portion of AP assassin champs who used DFG decline quite significantly in viability and effectiveness; inevitably, AD champs that perform many of the same functions will cement their positions at the top of of that tier list. This I suspect is exactly what Riot intends. It is also why they have vaguely mentioned Zed getting power reductions in some areas. Because after the removal of DFG, Zed will sit as the undisputed king of mid lane. No other champions (especially no AP) will even come close to him. This is just Riot's way of preemptively acting on what will be a massive topic of discontent for league players. They have no intention of nerfing Zed to the point where he is equal with others, they just have to reduce his overpowering presence in proportion to the massive nerfs most popular AP assassins will be receiving. Zed will still retain his UNREAL synergy with BotRK and Ghostblade, while AP will have no synergies now.

Then there's the still forever lingering and gaping hole that is limited itemization in this game. They keep saying how they intend to add more items that add complexity an depth to the game, but all they really seem to do is add/remove jungle items as the seasons go by and they keep reinventing the jungle. I've been playing this game since S2 and I can't say I've seen much depth of itemization added at all. The same items with the same function have just been juggled around. It's painfully obvious there is a lack of itemization in this game, especially for tanks/bruisers, but really for every role. When I play this game anymore, I feel like I just build all the same items no matter what the situation. So in that respect, I'm very disappointed in Riot for adding pretty much no new itemization, and instead removing a core item from AP that had important synergies. I have no doubt they will replace DFG with some ambiguous AP item that has very little difference from any of the other AP items.

Meanwhile, ALL HAIL AD as auto God tier and their INSANE burst synergies with BotRK and Ghostblade, may they forever remain holy and untouchable.
