Supports and their place in the "Meta" (aka State of the Support Address)

Let's talk about the Support role, shall we?

Disclaimer: I main Support. Only made Silver 2 last season (and started last season) but this is more for your input, not mine.

The Meta (defined as; the role structure that the vast majority adhere to most of the time because it is the tried-and-true method that works more often than not) places one player in the bottom lane which we aptly name Support, because his job is to give as many resources as possible to the Carries so that instead of having 2 mediocre players you have 1 really weak one and 1 very strong one. If you play by this, it means you are starved of the gold and items which other players enjoy. Because you are so weak and poor, you also get the duty of buying the weak items which would waste gold/space/stats on the remaining powerful players; that would be vision and other utility items.

Questions for the audience;

Do you find being the weakest member of the team enjoyable? (not considering the benefits of the role, or if you play an atypical supp that takes kills and CS)

Is the item pool for Supporting constricted due to lack of item paths? (such as by actives you want with stats you don't, too much CDR making you pass up a 3rd or 4th item for something else, or simply too expensive)

If Riot were to take a look at the role, would you ask them for improvements for you/your support, or would you prefer they leave alone/nerf it so it remains where it is?

My own input; I think there is far too much CDR on items I'd like to pick up in games that run late. If I run, lets say Leona, and I want Frozen heart because they have 3 strong AA based champs, things like Zeke's Herald is already off the table and possibly every other CDR item as I likely will have Locket and FotM too. Can't use +10% Masteries for early 0 item CDR or it'll get wasted too. I have an idea. Give the tier 3 Support gold items another bonus; CDR surpassing 40% contributes to another bonus, such as Movespeed.

You have 1 option for vision; both a Sightstone which you'll probably never upgrade til full build plus a Sweeping Lens which you will definitely upgrade early. I don't mind buying those, it's my job. What's annoying is that Sightstone has 1 upgrade option which you often don't care about. I mean, come on, an item you don't want to upgrade? What's with that? Give it some build paths that a support would like; nothing the jungler cares about though. Don't need to buff Lee Sin.

About being gold starved; well, if Supports had some nice options that others wouldn't use (like junglers) and they weren't expensive, I wouldn't mind if Zhonya's and Banner of Command couldn't be one of my first 3 items. How about the support gold items modify your Summoner Spells depending on what enchant you put on it?

How about it? Give Support the jungle rework treatment, or let it stagnate as what many typically believe to be simultaneously the most boring and the most stressful role?

What I want most is a better way to scale AP as a support. When all of your utility has an AP ratio (Sona, Nami in particular) you really want to be building big numbers but it's hard when you want to prioritise utility items like Mikael's that give you nothing. Frost Queen's Claim and Ardent Censer seem to be the only AP items that synergise with supports, have I missed any?

Depending on the kit and what you need, Rylai's and Twin Shadows are good picks. Mostly comfort picks though; I grab TS when my own jungle becomes dangerous.

Thanks for the tips, I really should try Twin Shadows. I've thought about Rylai's but tend to shy away from it because most AP supports will have a form of crowd control on their damaging abiliites anyway.

Ya, I've probably only used it on Support Zyra.

Well, you could say that when supports have utility AP ratios, every AP item synergizes with them. But I get what you're saying.

Banner of Command would probably be good for supports if it was good for anyone. Iceborn Gauntlet can be useful if you have a kit that encourages AA weaving, such as Taric and Sona.

I have a hard time playing pure AP supports anyway. When you're underfed and underleveled and then build 0 defense, you just get blown up way too fast to do anything useful at all.

But you're right that they basically have to build mage items on nowhere near a mage budget. One thing that can help there is items that use something other than gold to reach their full power.

One thing that I tried for a while was rod of ages -- because once you buy it, a support stacks it just as fast as everyone else. And it helps a bit with the squishiness problem. But it can take a pretty long time to get to where you can afford it at all.

Tear has some of the same "once you buy it, you don't need more gold/kills/cs to stack it" benefit, with a much lower barrier to entry.

My favorite support right now is Zilean. He is just as if not more mana hungry than Lux. What I've started doing is forgoing my gold income item and opting in for a doran's ring, for the extra early sustain. Requiring me to buy a gold item to itemize properly would just crush my laning phase.

I also wouldn't agree to being the weakest champion in the game. Especially with my personal support roster, that role usually belongs to the jungler. Even in the case the jungler didn't completely fail, my utility makes me feel stronger than my actual tankiness or damage provides.

I do agree that we need better itemization though.

While writing this I was considering Flask after Sightstone (especially on Soraka).

The only thing I'd like to see is more options for sightstone. While health certainly never hurts, it helps some champs much more than others

Not the best thing to give Soraka, unfortunately. It's actually counterproductive at worst with her since she sacrifices more HP by having more, but doesn't gain any extra healing in return.

A few changes that I would like to see are that Targon's can execute Jungle monsters as well as lane minions. This would allow for a more diverse and off meta supps (in case I want to do Jungle Supp) or if in a teamfight I can execute a monster to quickly heal up an ally who was just ignited etc.

Also I wish sightstone had multiple off build branches so that I can build it into an item that fits me as a player and not be down one slot just for vision.

Do you find being the weakest member of the team enjoyable?

No, but I don't really care that much either way. I find cooperating smoothly with my team enjoyable.

Is the item pool for Supporting constricted due to lack of item paths?

Yup. Support itemization continues to be extremely narrow. Quite tired of Mikael's all day erry day. Riot's general dislike of auras has considerably weakened the support item pool, and Riot hasn't added many support items to fill the gap.

If Riot were to take a look at the role, would you ask them for improvements for you/your support...

My view is that support is currently in the best state it has ever been. We have a diverse meta of viable picks and playstyles. We have an appropriately large amount of game impact.

Were I to ask for specific changes, I want a mini-rework on Sona. More specifically, I want Q power chord to not do more damage, and instead have a new utility effect. I think the damage is really warping power chord, so that we're always feeling pressure to use the Q chord and lots of her power budget is tied up in AA-Q-AA. If they removed the damage from Q(PC), we'd be able to distribute that power in a way that makes Sona feel better to play.

Weakest member of the team? I don't know what you're talking about.

No, seriously. When I support, I pick Nami . I upgrade my item 3303 once, get my item 2049 , then start building like a mid lane mage. Better heals, more damage, and the fact that the enemy team sees me as a double threat means they make stupid plays trying to kill me instead of the actual carries.

I had one game where our mid DCed, and I took the enemy mid laner down to half HP on my own. If our jungler had been less distracted farming we would have easily killed them.
