General Defense Question

For everyone that says defense and resistances are op and have 0 room for buffs.

Why aren’t you building them?
Why aren’t you challenger with your “brain dead defense” builds?
Why isn’t building defense meta?
Why aren’t tanks played every game?
Why are the majority of tanks only played in the support role?
Why don’t we have 4-5 tank teams just straight winning games?

Because I need to carry.
Because I'm too good for that build. And allies are holding me back!
Because Pros are too slow to adapt.
See number 1.
Because only cool kids play other roles and losers that need to be carried are support.
Because league isn't ready for my wet noodle skills.

It's sad that Sterak's is a better defensive item on bruisers than actual resistances or any of the other health items.

Because people fear the “tank meta” that wasn’t actually a tank meta it was just tanks doing their jobs of being hard to kill.

Tank meta litterallly cannot happen. It’s not possible with multiple items and conquerer being removed from the game.

I'm sorry, were you even here for Season 5? Because that wasn't what was happening. Sejuani wasn't nerfed so hard to the point she got a community term named after her, just because "She was too tanky." She, and several other tanks at the time, were too tanky along side being able to relatively out damage people like bruisers.

Yes, I'm aware that tanks can/should/could kill squishies if they sit on them long enough. But that doesn't mean that the proper ratio of "Hard to kill" and "Kills you before you kill them" was there. It was hugely favored in the tanks side.

Actually I did play then. And it was 2/3 problem items. That’s it. And those items got GUTTED for it.

The items being sunfire/cinderhulk and iceborne gauntlet. Those were the only problemed items.

"Outdamage" and "duel" are two different things. They never outdamaged them, they simply were able to win duels against them.

Their damage was still tame, they just were durable as all hell enough to duel anyone.

They were nowhere near what today's tanks are: just semi-tanky one-shotting monstrosities that get blown up within 2 seconds of a fight.

Season 5 tanks simply didn't die. They lived so long they just won the war of attrition in teamfights. They weren't blowing up ADCs or anything, they were simply on their ass 24/7 for like 10 seconds in each fight, enough time for even the wettest of noodles to kill an ADC or at least make them irrelevant in said fight.

Anyway:

I am. Fighter main, it's stupid if I don't pick them up when I need. However, I can easily see problems when a champ has literally no defensive scaling, meaning that many carry champs are often going to have to pick Hybrid defense items instead of true defense items to maximize their champion's effectiveness.
Because I play while sleep deprived too much. Also, Fighters.
I mean, it kinda is depending on your definition of defense items. Hybrid defense items are absolutely core on a lot of champions in the meta, PD Dancer on ADCs and Melee Carries, the plethora of AP+HP items, so on and so forth.
Because a combination of high Utility Support/Mid Laner and a strong Bruiser can fit similar niches to Tanks. Or it's SKT executing on a full Poke comp and know how not to screw it up. Or it's Solo Q and everyone is going Yasuo/Fiora/Riven/Master Yi and fucking up their team comp for style points.
The majority of Tanks aren't Supports.
They tend to lack waveclear first of all, which I've found to be a huge unsung determiner of games in more recent seasons. Also because it's hard to comp for that, especially with Galio's recent gutting.

I do build them 2)I am not level 30 yet 3) defensive itemization IS meta in competitive and korean challenger solo queue 4) because mages are stronger than tanks right now and have good lane phases against them (but build defensively themselves very often, ie Orianna's victory condition against jayce is hitting tabi and seekers without dying three times ) 5) because supports can tank effectively with less gold and free up a second mage slot on your team and 6) because tanks are most effective alongside a complimentary role
